The Casio G-Shock GA-2100 did not launch in 2020: Casio introduced it in 2019. But the slim, octagonal analog-digital watch became popular enough that Casio later said it remained especially popular among young people in Europe and the United States. Its appeal came from a distinctive combination: familiar G-Shock toughness and design cues in a cleaner, more compact-looking package.
What is the “CasiOak”?
“CasiOak” is a fan nickname for the Casio G-Shock GA-2100, inspired by comparisons between its octagonal bezel and the shape associated with Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak. It is a nickname, not evidence that the Royal Oak inspired the GA-2100. Casio’s own design history instead places the watch in the lineage of G-Shock models, including the original DW-5000 and the early analog G-Shock AW-500. Casio says the GA-2100 launched in 2019 as a reinterpretation of the DW-5000’s concept.
Why did the GA-2100 stand out?
A slimmer, more restrained G-Shock
Casio’s stated goal was to make a more compact, slimmer G-Shock while preserving the shock resistance the line is known for. The octagonal bezel gives the watch a clear outline, while the dial’s analog hands and digital display keep it practical without the crowded look some people associate with more feature-heavy sports watches. The result feels visually simpler than many G-Shocks, but it still reads as one.
That balance was intentional, not just a happy accident of styling. In a Hodinkee interview, product manager Junichi Izumi described the concept as an analog-digital version of the DW-5000 and said the team wanted a watch that could work in harmony with an outfit. That explains the design aim; it should not be mistaken for proof that every buyer chose it for the same reason. Hodinkee’s interview with the Casio team also reports that designer Ryo Amikura said more than twenty 3D-printed prototypes were made to settle the octagon’s proportions.

G-Shock recognition without a bulky look
The GA-2100 keeps a familiar G-Shock identity but presents it with a relatively lean profile and a less visually busy bezel. Casio credits its case construction with reducing bulk while maintaining shock resistance. On the specific Japanese-market GA-2100-1AJF reference, Casio lists a carbon-fiber-reinforced resin case, 11.8 mm thickness, shock resistance and 20-bar water resistance. Those figures belong to that reference; check the specification page for the exact watch you are considering rather than assuming every 2100-series model shares them. Casio’s GA-2100-1AJF specifications identify that particular model.
Was it really “the watch everyone wanted in 2020”?
“Everyone wanted it” is a catchy way to describe a moment of visibility, not a measurable sales claim. The available corporate evidence supports a more precise version: Casio’s FY2022 first-half results briefing said the GA-2100 remained popular, mainly among young people in Europe and the United States. That is a contemporaneous company description of popularity by region and demographic, not a survey, a 2020 sales total or proof that every watch buyer wanted one. Casio also reported strong sales for related models including the metal-bezel GM-2100 and the women’s GMA-S2100. Casio’s FY2022 first-half briefing provides that context.

The launch timing matters, too. The model arrived in 2019, so calling it a 2020 hit should describe its rise in attention rather than suggest it debuted that year. Casio’s later FY2026 first-quarter briefing said sales of the broader 2100 series, including GA-2100 and GA-B2100, remained stable worldwide. That points to continued relevance for the family at that reporting point, but it is not a GA-2100-only sales figure. Casio’s FY2026 first-quarter results briefing discusses the series.
Which 2100-series watch should you look at?
The original GA-2100 is not interchangeable with every watch that shares the 2100 name. Choose by the features and case treatment you want, and confirm the exact reference before buying.

What the CasiOak’s popularity says about the design
The GA-2100’s success makes sense as a meeting point between two kinds of appeal: the practical toughness and recognizable identity of a G-Shock, and a more pared-back shape that can sit comfortably with everyday clothing. Its octagon is distinctive without requiring a complicated dial, and the analog-digital layout bridges traditional watch cues and digital utility. The nickname helped people talk about the silhouette, but the watch’s own G-Shock history and compact-design brief explain it better than the comparison alone.
