Our selection spans a mechanical MotoGP limited edition, accessible quartz chronographs and a luxury Mille Miglia model whose appeal is rooted in its automotive design cues rather than stopwatch functionality.
What makes a watch a driving watch?
There is no single feature that defines the category. Some driving watches are chronographs with tachymeter scales; others signal their automotive connection through a race partnership, a marque, vintage-inspired details or a dial designed for quick reading. Decide whether you want an actual timing tool, a mechanical watch with motorsport character, or simply a design that suits the open-road theme.
A chronograph is a stopwatch function built into a watch. A tachymeter scale can convert the time taken to travel a known distance into average speed: start the chronograph at the beginning of the distance and stop it at the end, then read the scale. It is not an electronic speedometer and cannot tell you a vehicle’s speed without both the known distance and the timed interval. Certina describes its tachymeter watches as combining a chronograph with a scale for calculating the speed of a moving object.

Tissot T-Race: motorsport styling across movement types
Tissot’s 2026 expansion gives the T-Race range two distinct appeals: an automatic MotoGP chronograph for someone drawn to mechanical construction and a choice of quartz chronographs for a more straightforward stopwatch watch. The automatic limited edition’s 45 mm steel case and forged-carbon bezel insert give it a pronounced motorsport look and wrist presence. The quartz models include both 45 mm and 38 mm cases, making size an important part of the choice. The announcement does not state prices, so check Tissot’s local listing for current figures.

Chopard Mille Miglia: race heritage, without a chronograph
The 43 mm GTS Power Control Grigio-Blu 2026 Racing Edition is an automatic watch, but it is not a chronograph. That distinction matters if you want to time a lap or use a tachymeter; the model’s case for inclusion is its Mille Miglia connection and automotive detailing, not stopwatch utility.
Chopard says it became World Sponsor and Official Timekeeper of the Mille Miglia in 1988. The brand describes its collection’s straps as drawing on 1960s Dunlop tire treads or vintage driving gloves, its dials as using contrast and luminescent indications for glance clarity, and its knurled pushers as recalling brake pedals. These are design references, not evidence that a watch improves driving safety. Chopard also says its Mille Miglia timepieces use COSC-certified chronometer movements; that certification should not be read as a guarantee of accuracy in every real-world condition.

How to choose the right one
Start with the function you will use
- For stopwatch timing: choose a chronograph. A tachymeter is useful only when you can time travel over a known distance.
- For an automatic movement: the Tissot T-Race automatic and the Certina DS-7 Chrono Auto versions provide mechanical movement options. Chopard’s GTS Power Control is also automatic, but has no chronograph.
- For quartz: the T-Race quartz chronographs and Certina DS-7 Chronograph versions offer battery-powered options. Certina characterizes quartz as precise and low-maintenance; treat this as the manufacturer’s guidance rather than a universal ranking against every automatic watch.
Think about fit and legibility
Case diameter is a useful first filter, not a complete fit test: the T-Race options named by Tissot include 38 mm and 45 mm cases, while the Chopard example is 43 mm. Lug-to-lug length, case shape and strap also affect how a watch wears, and those details are not established for every model here. If possible, try the exact reference on your wrist. For a watch meant to be read quickly, consider dial contrast and whether the hands and markers remain easy for you to distinguish at a glance.
Weigh the kind of automotive connection you want
- Race association: Tissot’s MotoGP editions make the motorsport link explicit.
- Historic event and design cues: Chopard’s Mille Miglia range draws on its connection to the Italian race and details inspired by automotive equipment.
- Practical timing: look for a chronograph, and a tachymeter if you understand how to use it. A collection name or racing aesthetic alone does not imply either feature.
Movement and price are only part of the decision
An automatic movement may appeal if you value mechanical construction; quartz may suit you better if you prefer the manufacturer-described benefits of battery power and low maintenance. Neither choice by itself determines whether a watch is the better driving watch: case fit, dial readability, strap comfort and the kind of automotive story you care about all matter. Compare exact references rather than collection names, because a single collection can include chronographs and watches without chronograph functions.
