Verdict: The Xiaomi Smart Band 9 Active is worth considering only as a cheap, lightweight tracker for steps, sleep, notifications and basic phone-connected workouts. Its low price comes with important compromises: a 1.47-inch TFT screen instead of AMOLED, no built-in GPS, limited smartwatch features and independent testing that raises concerns about heart-rate, calorie and location accuracy.
Buy it when it is substantially cheaper than the standard Smart Band 9 and your expectations are modest. If the regular Band 9 costs only around $10–$20 more locally, it is probably the better purchase. Choose the Smart Band 9 Pro or another GPS-equipped tracker if you want phone-free running or cycling.
Quick verdict
- Best for: inexpensive step and sleep tracking, notifications and long battery life.
- Not for: serious training, dependable workout metrics, medical monitoring or phone-free GPS.
- Display: 1.47-inch, 172 × 320, 60Hz TFT; no always-on display.
- GPS: no built-in GPS; outdoor route tracking depends on a connected phone.
- Battery: Xiaomi claims up to 18 days, but its own FAQ says about six days with advanced health monitoring enabled.
- Water resistance: 5ATM for suitable shallow swimming, not diving or hot water.
- Main alternative: the standard Xiaomi Smart Band 9 if the price gap is small.
The Smart Band 9 Active was unveiled in China in October 2024 and subsequently rolled out to international markets, including markets where Xiaomi sells other Band 9 models. It is the budget member of the family: a simple fitness band rather than a smartwatch or independent sports watch. Availability, colors, pricing, warranty and even bundled accessories can vary by region.
What you get for the money
Xiaomi’s global specifications include 50 sports modes, all-day heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen readings, sleep-stage tracking, stress measurement, women’s health features, notification alerts and music controls. The Mi Fitness app stores activity history and provides additional summaries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

That feature list needs context. Fifty sports modes do not mean fifty equally reliable forms of measurement, and a feature being present does not make its result medically useful. Independent TechRadar testing found significant problems with fitness-related readings, including heart rate, calories and location data. Xiaomi also says the band and Mi Fitness are not medical devices and that readings are for reference.
Design: light and practical, not premium
The tracker body weighs approximately 16.5g without the strap and measures about 42.9 × 26.94 × 9.99mm, excluding the heart-rate sensor. Regional documentation gives slightly different measurements depending on how the sensor is counted. Its TPU strap is detachable and replaceable.
This is the kind of band that should be comfortable to wear overnight. The low weight is useful for sleep tracking and all-day wear, while the compact shape should suit smaller wrists better than a large smartwatch. Xiaomi lists pink, white and black in one regional configuration, but color availability differs between markets.
The construction is utilitarian plastic rather than premium. The important practical checks are whether the strap stays secure during exercise, whether the sensor protrusion irritates your wrist and whether the band rotates when worn loosely. A secure, comfortable fit matters because a loose or poorly positioned sensor can make heart-rate readings unreliable.
The TFT display is the clearest compromise
The Smart Band 9 Active uses a 1.47-inch color TFT display with 172 × 320 resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. Xiaomi presents 60Hz as an improvement over the Smart Band 8 Active, but the more important fact is what the Active does not have: an AMOLED panel and an always-on display.
Text and menus should be adequate indoors, but the TFT panel is less attractive and less contrasty than the AMOLED screen on the standard Smart Band 9. TechRadar described the display as pixelated and identified it as one of the areas where Xiaomi cut costs. Outdoors, direct sunlight and viewing angles are more meaningful than the 60Hz headline.
Rank #2
- 1.47'' TFT display, 60Hz high refresh rate
- Colorful straps and 100+ watch faces to style yourself
- 16.5g lightweight design, 9.99mm slim body
- Up to 18-day battery life, 5ATM water resistance
- Upgraded all-round sleep and health monitoring
Screen activation relies on wrist raise or tapping. There is no always-on option, so check whether wrist-raise activation works reliably for you while walking or running. Notifications may also require more scrolling than they would on a larger or sharper screen.
Fitness tracking: broad support, limited confidence
The band can record activities such as running, outdoor cycling and rowing, with the Mi Fitness app displaying workout history and additional metrics. However, the Smart Band 9 Active has no internal GPS.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For an outdoor workout, the phone must provide location data. That means carrying the phone, granting Mi Fitness location permission, keeping the phone’s location service active and maintaining a reliable connection. Phone-connected GPS is not equivalent to a GPS watch: the band cannot independently record a route, pace or distance after you leave your phone behind.
TechRadar’s independent review reported unreliable heart-rate, calorie and location-related results and advised against the band for people who care about those measurements. A syndicated report also highlighted GPS and distance inconsistencies. These are observations from independent testing, not clinical validation, but they are important because the low price is not merely buying fewer features—it may also mean less dependable feedback during exercise.
Use the Active for rough activity prompts and basic workout logging, not precise training decisions. If you need reliable pace, distance, heart-rate zones or calorie estimates, a tracker with stronger sensors and built-in GPS is a better starting point.
Health features: useful trends, not diagnosis
Xiaomi advertises:
- All-day heart-rate monitoring.
- Blood-oxygen monitoring and selectable low-blood-oxygen alerts at 80%, 85% or 90%.
- Light, deep and REM sleep tracking.
- Stress measurement.
- Women’s health features.
- Sleep Animal and breathing-score features, depending on activation and regional or software availability.
These features can help identify broad patterns, but they should not be treated as diagnostic measurements. Xiaomi explicitly says the product is not a medical device. The band does not support abnormal-heartbeat reminders.
Rank #3
Fit and conditions can produce missing or implausible readings. Xiaomi lists loose wear, dry skin, scars, cold temperatures and contact with objects as possible causes. The sensor may also misinterpret a surface such as a bed, table or bag as a wrist. Wear it snugly against clean skin, but not so tightly that it becomes uncomfortable.
Blood-oxygen readings are especially easy to overinterpret. They are for reference only and should not be used to diagnose or treat a condition. A concerning symptom or reading belongs with a healthcare professional, not with a decision based on a budget fitness band.
Battery life: 18 days is a light-use maximum
The band has a 300mAh battery and uses a magnetic charging cable. Xiaomi quotes roughly one hour and 40 minutes for a full charge. The strap does not need to be removed while charging.
The headline figure is up to 18 days, but Xiaomi’s test conditions are deliberately light: advanced sleep monitoring and all-day stress and blood-oxygen monitoring are off, heart rate is sampled every 30 minutes and screen activation is limited to 200 wrist raises per day. Xiaomi also quotes approximately nine days in heavy-load mode.
| Usage profile | Reasonable expectation |
|---|---|
| Light notifications and limited health monitoring | Potentially close to Xiaomi’s 18-day claim |
| Normal mixed use | Roughly one to two weeks; TechRadar achieved about two weeks in testing |
| Advanced health monitoring enabled | About six days, according to Xiaomi’s FAQ |
| Frequent workouts, notifications and monitoring | Potentially below four to six days |
Frequent screen activation, one-minute heart-rate sampling, all-day blood-oxygen monitoring, advanced sleep analysis and repeated exercise recording can all reduce endurance. The Active’s battery life is genuinely a strength, but only if you match the claim to your settings.
Water resistance: 5ATM is not waterproof
The Smart Band 9 Active is rated 5ATM water-resistant and is suitable for conditions such as shallow swimming. Do not use that rating as permission for diving, hot showers, hot tubs, hot springs, saunas or high-speed water sports. Heat, steam, pressure and chemicals can affect seals in ways a basic water-resistance rating does not cover.

Mi Fitness and everyday smart features
With the Mi Fitness app, the band can show notification reminders, incoming and missed-call alerts, weather, alarms and music controls. Other documented tools include a stopwatch, timer, countdown, flashlight, find-phone function and remote photography. Xiaomi lists more than 100 online band faces, custom photo backgrounds and support for installing up to two online faces alongside the two preinstalled faces.
These are useful companion features, but the Active is not a standalone device. It has no cellular connection, no built-in GPS and, for the models discussed in the comparison coverage, no NFC contactless payments. Calendar synchronization is limited to built-in Xiaomi and iOS calendars rather than third-party calendar apps. Watch-face complications cannot be freely customized.

Compatibility and setup
Xiaomi’s documentation is inconsistent about minimum phone software. The current global product page lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 14.0 or later, while Xiaomi’s FAQ lists Android 6.0 and iOS 12.0 or later, with Bluetooth 5.3. Check the requirements shown for your region and the current Mi Fitness app before buying.
- Charge the band to activate it.
- Install Mi Fitness and sign in to a Xiaomi Account.
- Grant the requested permissions.
- Open Mi Fitness and tap + in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Add device.
- Select the band matching the last four digits of its Bluetooth address.
- Confirm the check mark on the band.
After pairing, update the firmware. If syncing or notifications fail, check Bluetooth, notification permissions and background access. If the connection remains unreliable, unpair and reconnect after a factory reset. Xiaomi recommends using the supplied charging cable rather than a third-party cable.

Common problems and fixes
Battery drains in a few days
Check all-day blood-oxygen monitoring, one-minute heart-rate sampling, advanced sleep monitoring, sleep breathing score, frequent notifications, screen-wake settings and workout recording. Disable features you do not need, update the firmware and restart the band. If the problem persists, reset and reconnect it, then submit feedback through Mi Fitness.
Heart-rate readings are missing or implausible
Make sure the band is snug, the sensor touches skin and the skin is not excessively dry. Remove it from scars, avoid testing in very cold conditions and do not place the band against a table, bed or other object.
GPS distance is wrong
Remember that the band has no internal GPS. Carry the phone consistently, enable location services, grant Mi Fitness location permission and start the workout after the phone has established a signal. For dependable phone-free routes, use a tracker or watch with built-in GPS.
Notifications do not appear
Confirm that the band is paired, Bluetooth is active, notification permissions are enabled and the relevant apps are selected. Allow Mi Fitness to run in the background and remove aggressive battery restrictions.

Who should buy the Smart Band 9 Active?
Buy it if you want the cheapest practical wrist accessory for steps, approximate sleep trends, basic notifications, music controls and occasional phone-connected exercise. It makes the most sense when heavily discounted and when long battery life matters more than screen quality or precision.
Skip it if you care about reliable heart-rate or calorie data, built-in GPS, an AMOLED or always-on display, contactless payments, abnormal-heartbeat alerts or serious training analysis. The number of sports modes cannot compensate for those missing capabilities or questionable measurements.
Upgrade to the standard Smart Band 9 when it is only around $10–$20 more in your market. Choose the Smart Band 9 Pro or another GPS-equipped tracker when phone-free outdoor exercise is essential. The Active is good value only when its low price is the main requirement; otherwise, its compromises can make the cheaper purchase a false economy.
