Swatch’s BREAK FREE collection revisits Keith Haring’s connection to the brand and its first World Breakdance Championship, held in New York on September 20, 1984. It includes three 33 mm square BIOCERAMIC WHAT IF? watches inspired by the event, plus a separate 41 mm Gent model based on an archived Haring drawing. The main choice is visual and practical: square or round case, which artwork you prefer, and whether you want the SwatchPAY! edition.
Why Swatch made the BREAK FREE collection
Swatch staged its first World Breakdance Championship in New York on September 20, 1984. Keith Haring designed the event poster and served as a judge. The 2024 BREAK FREE collection draws on that intersection of street culture, dance and art. Swatch’s official announcement describes the watches as a tribute to the event and features Haring reflecting on the idea of putting human expression into an object.
Three models translate the championship’s imagery into square watches. A fourth, From The Archive, is a distinct design: it reproduces a Haring pencil-and-ink drawing that Swatch says he gifted to the company and that was later used for the colorful 1986 Modèle Avec Personnages watch.

How to choose between the watches
Choose Breaks Off for the multicolor poster look
Breaks Off is the most direct pick if you want the colorful interpretation of the championship poster. Its matte-black square case contrasts with a green strap and multicolor dial.
Choose Break Loose for black-and-white artwork
Break Loose retains the black square case but uses a monochrome dial and black strap. It is the collection’s restrained option if you prefer the poster imagery without the multicolor palette.

Choose Break Time for the winners’ design
Break Time uses the design given to the championship’s winning performers, rather than the poster interpretation. Its matte-orange case makes it the most visibly distinct of the three square models.
Choose From The Archive for a larger, round case
From The Archive is not a square What If? model. It is a 41 mm Gent with a transparent case and strap, and its pale dial is based on Haring’s archived drawing. The PAY! reference adds SwatchPAY! capability where that function is available; Swatch notes that payment availability is limited to some countries, so check local availability before buying.

Are these reissues of Haring’s original Swatch watches?
Not as a group. The three square BREAK FREE watches reinterpret designs connected to the 1984 breakdance championship. From The Archive draws on Haring’s pencil-and-ink work, which was used for the 1986 Modèle Avec Personnages (GZ100). It is a new release based on that artwork, not the original 1986 watch itself.
Fratello identifies four Haring Swatches from 1986: Modèle Avec Personnages (GZ100), Serpent (GZ102), Milles Pattes (GZ103) and Blanc Sur Noir (GZ104). Those vintage watches are separate from the 2024 BREAK FREE collection; their resale values are not established by the cited launch coverage.
