It is an editorial selection, not a scored ranking or independent test. Understanding how often each calendar needs correction makes the differences more useful than a simple “best” order.
Calendar watches: what needs correcting, and when?
The label on a calendar watch tells you how much of the calendar its mechanism accounts for. A complete calendar displays day, date, and month, but does not compensate for shorter months; its date needs correcting after any month with fewer than 31 days. An annual calendar handles 30- and 31-day months automatically, but needs one correction when February ends. Baume & Mercier’s official guide describes that annual-calendar adjustment.
A perpetual calendar tracks month lengths and leap years while running. Patek Philippe describes the complication as automatically accounting for monthly variations and leap years on its official page. Ordinary perpetual calendars nevertheless need correction at a non-leap century year: under the Gregorian rule, years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400. Patek Philippe notes that the next such exception is 2100. Most perpetual calendars therefore need resetting at 100-year intervals, as Hodinkee explains.
A secular perpetual calendar goes further by accounting for the century-year exception. That additional mechanism does not mean a watch can never need attention: any calendar watch that stops may require its indications to be reset.

Five notable calendar watches from 2024
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar John Mayer
Monochrome presents the John Mayer Royal Oak as a farewell to Audemars Piguet’s self-winding calibre 5134. The edition pairs the movement and Royal Oak perpetual-calendar layout with a 41 mm white-gold case. Its appeal is a familiar, multi-indication perpetual-calendar presentation within the distinctive Royal Oak design, rather than a radically different display concept.
Christiaan van der Klaauw Grand Planetarium Eccentric
The Grand Planetarium Eccentric takes the calendar watch into astronomical territory. Christiaan van der Klaauw’s 2024 offering tracks all the planets, including Uranus and Neptune, along eccentric paths, while also displaying calendar indications and zodiac signs. Monochrome reports that the system contains 3,338 teeth; that figure is the publication’s report, not an independently verified count here. This is the selection’s most overtly celestial direction, where the planetary display is as central as ordinary datekeeping.

IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar
Monochrome calls the Portugieser Eternal Calendar IWC’s first secular perpetual calendar. According to the roundup, it accounts for century years through 3999, addressing the exception that conventional perpetual calendars eventually encounter. Monochrome also reports a moon-phase display accuracy of 45 million years and says the watch received the Aiguille d’Or at GPHG 2024. Those figures and award details are attributed to the roundup.
Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Annual Calendar
The new 2024 version of Laurent Ferrier’s Classic Moon Annual Calendar adds a moon-phase display to an annual calendar. Its calendar logic is less demanding than a perpetual calendar: it handles 30- and 31-day months but needs correction after February. The watch brings lunar display into a practical annual-calendar format rather than trying to account for century-year exceptions.

Patek Philippe In-Line Perpetual Calendar Salmon 5236P
The salmon-dial 5236P makes its calendar information distinctive through layout. Day, date, and month appear together in a single large aperture, in the one-line arrangement introduced on the reference. Patek Philippe’s official model page identifies it as an In-Line Perpetual Calendar with day, date, and month displayed in one aperture. It offers a clear alternative to conventional arrangements that distribute calendar information across separate subdials.

For routine datekeeping, an annual calendar is a middle ground: it takes care of most month-length differences and asks for a correction once a year. A perpetual calendar reduces those routine corrections further, while the IWC’s secular mechanism addresses an exception ordinary perpetual calendars do not. The CVDK emphasizes planetary motion rather than a conventional calendar-first display. Meanwhile, the AP and Patek Philippe illustrate two different ways to present perpetual-calendar information: a familiar Royal Oak layout and a single aperture for day, date, and month.

Which direction makes sense for you?
- Choose an annual-calendar approach if handling one correction after February is acceptable and a moon-phase display is part of the appeal; the Laurent Ferrier combines those elements.
- Look to a conventional perpetual calendar if you value a mechanism that tracks month lengths and leap years while running. The AP offers a traditional perpetual-calendar layout, while the Patek Philippe makes day, date, and month unusually easy to read together.
- Consider the secular perpetual calendar if the century-year exception is part of what interests you about calendar mechanics. Monochrome says the IWC accounts for those years through 3999.
- Choose the astronomical route if you want a planetary display to be the point, rather than simply a more elaborate date indication. The CVDK is the selection’s outlier in purpose and presentation.
Mechanical ambition is not automatically a daily-use advantage. Adjustment frequency, the clarity of the display, and whether planetary or lunar indications matter to you are separate considerations; a more elaborate mechanism does not necessarily make the calendar easier to read or set.
