Grand Seiko’s most notable 2021 watches included a prize-winning high-beat steel sports watch, two very different Spring Drive designs, a GMT, and finely finished dress watches. The SLGH005 White Birch is the clearest headline pick: it won the 2021 GPHG Men’s Watch Prize. But “best” depends on whether you value an award-winning release, a five-day power reserve, smaller dress-watch proportions, or a travel complication.
This is an editorial shortlist based on contemporary 2021 coverage and Grand Seiko’s award announcement—not a universal ranking or a guide to today’s prices and availability.
How to choose among Grand Seiko’s 2021 standouts
Start with the kind of watch you want, rather than treating the GPHG result as a verdict on every model. The SLGH005 is the award-recognized mechanical choice; the SLGA007 offers Spring Drive and a five-day reserve; the SBGY007 is a smaller hand-wound dress option. The SBGJ249 adds a GMT function, while the SBGW267 and SBGW269 emphasize traditional manual-wind dress-watch design. At the high end, the SBGZ007 pairs a platinum case with a very limited production run.
When comparing them, consider movement, case dimensions, water resistance, dial style, bracelet or strap use, edition status, and the price in your market. Contemporary roundup specifications and opinions are attributed below; they do not establish current market value or stock.

Six Grand Seiko watches worth considering from 2021
SLGH005 White Birch: the award-winning all-rounder
The SLGH005’s textured dial takes inspiration from northern Japan’s white-birch forests. It was a signature Grand Seiko release of 2021 and won that year’s GPHG Men’s Watch Prize. Grand Seiko said it was chosen from six nominees by a 30-member jury. The award is a strong reason to put it on a shortlist, though it does not mean it will suit every wearer.
Its high-beat mechanical Caliber 9SA5 is reported by Grand Seiko with an 80-hour power reserve and a precision rate of +5 to −3 seconds per day. Monochrome Watches reported a 40 mm steel case, 11.7 mm thickness, 100 m water resistance, and steel bracelet. Fratello described it as not being a limited edition in its 2021 coverage.

SLGA007 Lake Suwa: Spring Drive and a five-day reserve
The SLGA007 uses a blue dial inspired by Lake Suwa and Spring Drive Caliber 9RA2. Contemporary coverage reports a five-day power reserve, a 40 mm case, and 11.8 mm thickness. Grand Seiko’s official boutique listing identifies it as a limited edition; Fratello reported production limited to 2,021 pieces in 2021.

Choose it if you prefer the Spring Drive option and Lake Suwa-inspired dial over the SLGH005’s high-beat mechanical movement. The two watches share a reported 40 mm case diameter, but their movement designs and dial character differ. The Grand Seiko Official Boutique SLGA007 listing identifies the limited-edition model and 9RA2 caliber.
SBGY007 Omiwatari: a smaller, dress-oriented Spring Drive
The SBGY007 is the more restrained dress-watch alternative in this group. Fratello reported a 38.5 mm case and hand-wound Spring Drive Caliber 9R31, with a blue dial. Its smaller reported diameter and hand-wound architecture distinguish it from the 40 mm SLGA007 and the automatic high-beat SLGH005.

SBGJ249 Shōsho: the GMT choice
For a travel complication, consider the SBGJ249. Fratello reported a light-blue textured dial, Hi-Beat Caliber 9S86, and a 39.5 mm case. It is the GMT pick in this shortlist, rather than a Spring Drive alternative.
SBGW267 and SBGW269: hand-wound dress editions
These European-market editions pair shoji-paper-inspired dial texture with a manual-wind Caliber 9S64. Monochrome reported a 37.3 mm case and 72-hour power reserve. Their smaller case and traditional hand-wound format make them distinct from the sportier, larger-cased options above.

The SBGZ007 is the high-end Masterpiece option here, with a platinum case, starry-sky dial, and Spring Drive movement. Monochrome reported an 84-hour reserve, production of 50 pieces, and a 2021 price of EUR 80,000. Its precious-metal construction and reported limited production put it in a different category from the steel watches in this shortlist.

Fratello’s euro and dollar figures, and Monochrome’s euro figure, describe reported 2021 retail prices. They are not directly comparable across markets without accounting for date, taxes, and local pricing.
What the 2021 award and prices do—and do not—tell you
Grand Seiko’s GPHG announcement establishes that the SLGH005 received the 2021 Men’s Watch Prize, selected from six nominees by a jury of 30. That makes it an award-winning release, not an independently established universal “best” watch. The shortlist’s other strengths—Spring Drive, GMT function, smaller proportions, or precious-metal finishing—answer different preferences.
