The clearest answer is Grand Seiko quartz watches as a category—not one named model. In a November 2024 T3 interview, a Grand Seiko Master Watch Technician identified only as Rob said, “Anything with a quartz movement is underrated.” The article pictured the Grand Seiko SBGX353, but did not report that Rob singled out that specific watch.
What did Grand Seiko’s technician actually recommend?
Rob’s recommendation was about quartz Grand Seiko watches generally. T3 reported that he said, “Anything with a quartz movement is underrated,” adding that such watches “never get the love they deserve.” His praise is an opinion, not a claim that quartz watches deliver literal perfection under every condition.
T3 described Rob as having worked with the Seiko group for 39 years and as part of the Grand Seiko team since 2013 at the time of its November 2024 article. It also called him one of the first certified Grand Seiko watchmakers outside Japan. Those are T3’s biographical descriptions; the interview identifies him only as Rob.
Why is the SBGX353 associated with the claim?
The watch pictured with the T3 story is the Grand Seiko SBGX353. Grand Seiko lists it in the Elegance Collection and specifies a quartz caliber 9F61. The distinction matters: the SBGX353 is the pictured example, while Rob’s reported endorsement applies to quartz watches as a category.

On Grand Seiko’s official US product page, the SBGX353 is described as having a pale blue, snow-inspired dial made at the Shinshu Watch Studio. The brand says the dial evokes snow visible to its watchmakers for several months each year. Its five-faceted, diamond-cut indices and long minute and seconds hands reaching the minute track are also brand-described design details.

The 34 mm diameter is only part of the fit picture: the official dimensions also give a 41.5 mm lug-to-lug length. Those measurements help narrow expectations, but do not establish how the watch will wear on any particular wrist.

What makes Grand Seiko’s 9F quartz different?
Grand Seiko describes the wider 9F family as hand-assembled and highlights mechanisms intended to address practical challenges in quartz watchmaking. Its Twin Pulse Control Motor is designed to move longer, heavier hands while conserving battery power. The Backlash Auto-Adjust Mechanism is intended to stabilize seconds-hand movement. The brand also describes oscillator aging and temperature compensation practices.
These are manufacturer explanations about the 9F family, not independent test results or features unique to the SBGX353. For this model, the concrete caliber-level figures Grand Seiko publishes are ±10 seconds per year, approximately three years of battery life, and a hacking function.

Is this the right Grand Seiko if you are shopping?
The SBGX353 makes sense to consider if you want a compact dress-leaning watch, prefer quartz timekeeping, and are drawn to its pale blue dial. Its published splash-resistance description is not a basis for treating it as a swimming or diving choice. Battery replacement is also a recurring ownership consideration, unlike a watch powered without a battery.
If you are comparing it with another Grand Seiko, weigh the movement type and stated accuracy alongside fit, dial readability, water-resistance needs, and maintenance. Use official specifications for both candidates and compare prices in the same market; the US page’s displayed price is not a worldwide or guaranteed transaction price.
