The current steel 36mm is reference 124270. Its proportions are not a universal fit, but its return makes sense for an Explorer whose original size was 36mm.
Why 36mm fits the Explorer’s history
Rolex dates the Explorer’s original 36mm size to 1953. The case grew to 39mm in 2010, then the Explorer returned to 36mm in 2021. In 2023, Rolex added a 40mm version, making the larger case an alternative rather than a replacement for the smaller one. Rolex’s Explorer history and its 2023 Newsroom account support that timeline.
What the current Explorer 36 offers
Reference 124270 pairs a 36mm Oystersteel case with a smooth bezel, black dial and Oyster bracelet. Its display uses the Explorer’s familiar 3, 6 and 9 numerals; Rolex says the Chromalight luminescent material gives the hands and hour markers a long-lasting blue glow. The design is direct and legible, without adding complications to the dial. Rolex lists the model’s details here.
- Movement: Rolex calibre 3230, a self-winding mechanical movement.
- Power reserve: approximately 70 hours, according to Rolex.
- Water resistance: 100 metres (330 feet), according to Rolex.
- Precision: Rolex states that its Superlative Chronometer standard for a finished watch is in the order of −2/+2 seconds per day. That is Rolex’s stated standard, not an independent test result for this article.
Rolex says both the Explorer 36 and Explorer 40 use calibre 3230. The brand’s specifications make the 36 a capable everyday watch on paper, but they do not determine how it will feel on a particular wrist.

The 4mm difference is the clearest distinction established by Rolex’s published material. It does not translate into a reliable wrist-size rule: the sources do not provide lug-to-lug measurements or wrist recommendations, and fit depends on more than the case diameter. If possible, compare both sizes on your own wrist and consider how each looks and feels rather than assuming one is objectively better.
