It is not the automatic winner for anyone prioritizing ceramic-bezel toughness, quick bracelet adjustment or a current Rolex warranty.
What the Rolex Submariner 14060M is
The 14060M is the no-date Submariner reference produced roughly from 1999 or 2000 until 2012. Its “M” identifies the modified movement generation. The core specification is a 40 mm stainless-steel case, Rolex caliber 3130, black aluminum bezel insert, sapphire crystal and a black dial without a date window.
Rolex’s official history dates the Submariner’s launch to 1953, when it was the first divers’ wristwatch waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet). Rolex says the line later reached 300 metres (1,000 feet) of water resistance and uses a unidirectional bezel to monitor elapsed time underwater.

How the 14060M changed during production
- 1999/2000: The reference began with caliber 3130 and the traditional two-line no-date dial.
- 2007: Rolex sought official chronometer certification for the no-date Submariner. The later four-line dial added “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER / OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED.”
- Later examples: Engraved-rehaut watches appeared during the run. ChronoCheck identifies distinct two-line and four-line phases within the 1999–2012 reference period.
- 2012: Rolex discontinued the 14060M and replaced it with the 114060.
Why enthusiasts still prefer it
Traditional proportions
The 40 mm case and slimmer traditional profile wear with less visual mass than the broader 114060 and today’s 41 mm no-date Submariners. That difference is immediately noticeable on smaller and medium-sized wrists.

A perfectly symmetrical dial
Removing the date window preserves the Submariner’s left-to-right balance. For many buyers, this is the cleanest modern Rolex sports-watch layout.
An aluminum bezel that develops character
Aluminum is less scratch resistant than ceramic, but its softer appearance suits the 14060M’s period identity. An insert can show use and age in a way a modern ceramic bezel generally does not.
The last of several old-school details
Phillips describes the 14060M as the last Rolex sports model with drilled lug holes, a stamped bracelet clasp, stamped end links and an aluminum bezel insert. These details make strap changes easier and give the watch a more tool-oriented feel than its successors.

Should you buy a two-liner or a four-liner?
| Version | Production context | What you are choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Two-line | Earlier 14060M presentation | The cleaner, more minimal no-date dial with the strongest vintage-inspired appearance |
| Four-line/COSC | Certification phase beginning in 2007 | The added “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER / OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED” text and a later-production specification |
Phillips frames this as a genuine collector choice rather than a simple hierarchy: buyers can select the uncluttered two-liner or the certified four-liner. Decide which dial language you want before comparing prices, because otherwise you may mistake a preference for a premium.
14060M versus 114060 and 124060
| Area | 14060M | 114060 | 124060 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Case proportion | Traditional 40 mm profile | Broader Maxi-style case | Current 41 mm no-date format |
| Bezel | Aluminum insert | Ceramic insert | Ceramic insert |
| Bracelet and adjustment | Stamped clasp and stamped end links | Solid-link bracelet with Glidelock extension system | Modern clasp system |
| Movement | Caliber 3130 | Blue Parachrom hairspring and the successor-generation specification | Newer movement; specific caliber not stated by the cited source |
| Warranty and support | Discontinued; arrangements differ from a new Rolex purchase | Newer-reference support | Current Rolex purchase and warranty framework |
| Overall character | Classic, lighter-looking tool watch | More contemporary and robust-looking | Most current interpretation |
Choose the 114060 or 124060 if maximum bezel scratch resistance, a solid modern clasp and contemporary ownership support matter more than the 14060M’s proportions and period details. Choose the 14060M when the older visual language is the reason you want a Submariner in the first place.
What is a fair price for a 14060M in 2026?
There is no single fair price because condition, originality, completeness and service history change the comparison. The available market indicators provide useful reference points, not guaranteed selling prices.

Use like-for-like comparisons. A full-set watch with original components and recent documented service is not directly comparable with a heavily polished example, a watch missing papers or a piece carrying undisclosed replacement parts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the 14060M hold its value?
Its discontinued status, recognizable specification and active secondary-market turnover support continued demand, but no market indicator guarantees future performance. The 21-day median time on market reported by WatchCharts describes liquidity in that dataset, not a promise that every example will sell quickly.

How to buy a 14060M without overpaying
- Set the dial brief first. Decide whether you want the two-line or four-line/COSC presentation before opening price comparisons.
- Inspect the case. Check lug-hole shape, crown guards, bevels and overall geometry for excessive polishing or reshaping.
- Audit every visible component. Confirm whether the dial, hands, bezel insert, bracelet, clasp and end links are original. Any replacement should be clearly disclosed.
- Request service documentation. Establish when the last overhaul occurred and allow for service if the record is missing or outdated.
- Match the paperwork. Check box, papers, serial consistency and the seller’s ownership or provenance documentation.
- Protect the transaction. Use independent authentication where appropriate, verify the seller’s reputation and insist on clear return terms.
- Compare equivalent examples. Adjust for polishing, completeness, service history and condition instead of comparing headline prices alone.
- Plan for discontinued-reference support. Parts and service arrangements are different from buying a new Rolex with current warranty coverage.
Who should buy the 14060M?
It is the right choice when
- You want a 40 mm Submariner with a symmetrical no-date dial.
- You prefer an aluminum bezel and older tool-watch hardware to modern ceramic and luxury finishing.
- You care about drilled lugs, stamped clasp construction and the option of a two-line dial.
- You are comfortable buying discontinued and judging condition, originality and service history.
Choose a newer reference when
- You want the greatest resistance to bezel scratches.
- You need easier on-the-fly bracelet adjustment through a modern clasp system.
- You prefer the broader Maxi case or current 41 mm proportions.
- A current Rolex warranty and contemporary support matter more than vintage character.
Verdict
The 14060M remains the Rolex Submariner to buy for a specific kind of enthusiast: someone who wants the classic no-date formula at its last transitional point, with traditional proportions and unmistakably old-school details. The 114060 and 124060 are objectively more modern, but they solve different priorities. Buy the 14060M for its character—and judge the individual watch’s originality, case condition, service history and seller protections more carefully than the dial line count alone.
