Its striking stone case was more than a design flourish: Tissot says the unstable material took a decade to turn into a manufacturable watch. The RockWatch has since returned as a distinct, numbered edition made with stone identified as coming from Jungfrau Mountain—so its specifications should not be confused with those of vintage examples.
Why Tissot made a watch from stone
Tissot’s official history says: “In 1985, Tissot launched the very first watch made of granite from the Swiss Alps.” The concept reportedly took a decade to develop. Granite was unstable to work with, and producing a watch from it required an industrial process as well as purpose-designed machines and tools. Tissot’s account of the RockWatch’s development frames the watch as both a material experiment and a manufacturing challenge.
The RockWatch followed other experiments with unconventional materials in Tissot’s history: the fiberglass Sidéral, introduced in 1969, and the plastic Idea 2001, introduced in 1971. Granite made the RockWatch a particularly literal expression of that approach: a natural material had to be adapted to the demands of a watch case.
What “RockWatch” means for vintage examples
Granite is central to the original concept, but it is not safe to assume every watch called a RockWatch has the same stone, configuration, or movement. A specialist horology overview discusses a range of stone types, while the museum record documents one particular post-1985 Swiss-granite watch. Neither source establishes a complete official catalogue of every original variant.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The museum’s cataloged object is useful as a specific reference point, not a universal checklist. Its dial is marked “Tissot Swiss made”; its case cover reads “Genuine Rock Watch T Swiss quartz R 150 907-7”; and its movement is identified as ETA 976001. Those markings and that movement belong to that documented example. See the museum record for the cataloged watch.
How to assess a vintage Tissot RockWatch
For a vintage Tissot RockWatch, assess the watch as a particular object and variant rather than trying to authenticate it from one familiar-looking detail. The available sources do not provide a complete official list of original references, dimensions, or movements.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Stone and condition: Examine the case material and its condition, including any visible damage. A stone case alone does not establish which variant the watch is.
- Markings: Record the dial and case-back inscriptions and compare them with documentation for the specific watch. The museum-recorded wording is evidence for that object, not a requirement that every example carry identical text.
- Movement: Seek movement evidence appropriate to the claimed reference. The museum identifies ETA 976001 in its example, but that does not establish the movement used in every RockWatch.
- Dimensions and variant: Confirm measurements and configuration against model-specific documentation where available; do not transfer the current edition’s dimensions to an 1980s watch.
- Seller documentation: Ask for clear photographs and any provenance or service records. Appearance or a single marking is not enough to establish authenticity.
Vintage listing details can vary, and the available sources do not establish current supply of authenticated examples or a reliable market-value figure. Treat a listing as a claim to verify, not as proof of a watch’s identity.

What the RockWatch’s history tells us
The 1985 RockWatch is notable not only for its granite but for the work required to make that stone usable in a watch. Its history connects an unconventional-material design idea to the specialized processes and tooling needed to manufacture it. The later Jungfrau Mountain edition carries that material story forward, but its numbered run and modern specifications make it a separate product—not a template for identifying every vintage RockWatch.
