Timex’s pages describe the automatic movement as Japanese, but do not name its caliber. One Reddit owner identified the movement as a Miyota 8215; that is an owner’s claim, not a confirmed specification from Timex. The owner’s post also concerns a 40 mm MK1 but does not establish which reference they purchased.
How faithful is the MK1 design?
Timex describes the watch as a reinvention of its MK1 and calls its look a classic military aesthetic. The black dial, fabric option and field-watch proportions support “military-inspired” or “MK1-style” as useful descriptions. The available product information does not document a detailed comparison with a specific historic MK1 reference, so it is safer not to call this an exact historical reproduction.

The product page says the case back has a blue-tinted exhibition window showing the Japanese automatic movement. Timex’s phrasing is: “We’re reinventing our beloved MK1®, enhancing its classic military aesthetic with a blue-tinted exhibition window on the case back that reveals the reliable Japanese automatic movement ticking inside.”
What are the trade-offs in everyday ownership?
Acrylic crystal: vintage character, more scratches
The domed acrylic crystal suits the watch’s vintage styling. Timex says it is impact resistant and that scuffs can be polished, but also notes acrylic is softer and more prone to scratching than harder crystal materials. If you prefer a crystal that resists visible scratches, this is a real upkeep trade-off rather than a purely cosmetic detail.

Water resistance: light swimming, not diving
Timex lists 50 m water resistance for the cited fabric models and describes the watch as suitable for light swimming. Its guidance excludes snorkeling and poolside diving. Treat that as the intended-use boundary; a 50 m label does not make this a dive watch.
Thickness and rate: distinguish specification from owner experience
Timex lists 13.3 mm case height for TW2Y71700. A Reddit owner reported about 13.5 mm overall thickness including the domed crystal, hacking seconds and an observed rate of approximately +10 seconds per day on their watch. Those are single-owner observations, not measurements of this review sample or a guarantee of performance across units.

Is it affordable, and what should you compare?
Timex’s US page for TW2Y07800 displayed $309 when accessed on October 4, 2026. The Reddit owner said they paid $299 for a 40 mm MK1, but did not identify the exact reference or establish that this was a broadly available price. Both figures are dated snapshots; check the live listing and confirm the strap variant before purchase.
A price alone cannot establish that the watch is affordable or good value. For a meaningful comparison, match alternatives on current transaction price, case diameter and lug-to-lug length, thickness, movement and winding behavior, crystal material and scratch maintenance, water resistance, strap width and attachment, and warranty or service support. The available information does not establish a ranked competitor or a market-wide affordability benchmark.

- Compare the case height and lug-to-lug measurements for the specific reference with your wrist and fit preference; the listed figures differ between TW2Y07800 and TW2Y71700.
