A fully depleted battery, poor charging contact, a defective or incompatible charger, frozen software, an interrupted update, or display damage can produce the same symptom. Start with the safest recovery step: connect the correct charger to a wall outlet and leave the watch charging for 60 minutes. A completely empty Versa may remain black for several minutes before showing anything.
Use the model-specific steps below, preserve your data whenever the watch is detectable, and stop charging or seek support if the device is swollen, cracked, wet, unusually hot, or smells burnt.
Identify your Versa before pressing buttons
“Versa” covers several models with different restart procedures and chargers.
| Model | How to identify it for this guide | Forced restart | Charging hardware |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fitbit Versa (original) | First-generation Versa | Hold the left/back and bottom-right buttons together for 10 seconds | Cradle-style |
| Versa Lite | Lite Edition | Hold its single physical button for 10 seconds | Cradle-style |
| Versa 2 | Second-generation Versa | Hold its single physical button for 10 seconds | Model-specific cradle |
| Versa 3 | Third-generation Versa | Hold its single physical button for 10 seconds | Magnetic cable |
| Versa 4 | Fourth-generation Versa | Hold its single physical button for 10 seconds | Magnetic cable |
Google’s official restart instructions are at Google’s Versa restart guide. Restarting reboots the watch; it is not a factory reset and should not erase activity data.

1. Charge it from a wall outlet for one hour
Use the charger intended for your exact model, connect it to a standard wall outlet, and leave the watch connected for at least 60 minutes. Do not use a computer USB port for this first recovery attempt. Google says a totally depleted watch can remain black for several minutes after connection and specifically recommends one hour of wall-outlet charging: official charging troubleshooting.
- Keep the watch connected while you try the official forced restart.
- Look for a Fitbit logo, battery icon, vibration, screen flash, or recognition in the Fitbit/Google Health app.
- Warmth alone is not proof that electrical contact is good.
- Do not leave a visibly swollen, cracked, wet, leaking, or unusually hot watch charging unattended.
2. Clean and reseat the charging connection
A charger can appear attached while sweat, lotion, oil, corrosion, debris, poor alignment, or a stuck pin prevents charging. Follow Google’s blank-screen guidance and charging instructions.
- Remove the watch from the charger and inspect the gold or bronze contacts on its back.
- Inspect the charger pins for dirt, corrosion, or a pin held down. Gently press each pin; it should spring back immediately.
- Clean the watch contacts gently with a soft toothbrush and fresh water.
- Dry the watch completely with a cloth or tissue.
- Clean the charger pins carefully with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, leaving no fibers behind.
- Reconnect the charger and confirm that the cradle or magnetic cable sits securely.
Never scrape contacts with metal, insert needles or paper clips, or probe small holes. Some holes are microphones or altimeter sensors, not reset buttons. Charging hardware differs by generation: Versa, Versa Lite, and Versa 2 use cradles, while Versa 3 and Versa 4 use magnetic cables. Google specifically says the Versa 2 cable is not interchangeable with the original Versa or Versa Lite; see the official charging guide.
3. Perform the official forced restart
Original Fitbit Versa
- Keep the watch connected to its charger.
- Press and hold the left/back button and bottom-right button simultaneously.
- Hold for about 10 seconds.
- Release both buttons when the Fitbit logo appears.
Versa Lite, Versa 2, Versa 3, and Versa 4
- Keep the watch connected to its charger.
- Press and hold the watch’s single physical button for 10 seconds.
- Release it when the Fitbit logo appears.
Success may look like a logo, vibration, boot animation, or the clock returning after a short delay. Use the method in Google’s restart instructions; do not rely on random button combinations.

No logo, vibration, or app detection
After a known-good, model-correct charger, a one-hour wall charge, cleaned contacts, and one official restart, the likely areas include a failed battery, charging cable or pins, power-management circuitry, or the mainboard. Contact Google/Fitbit support and check warranty eligibility rather than repeatedly forcing resets.
Vibration or app detection, but a black display
If the watch vibrates, receives notifications, or still appears in the Fitbit/Google Health app, it may be operating despite a failed display, backlight, touch layer, or firmware problem. This symptom pattern is an inference, not a confirmed diagnosis. Restart it once, then sync immediately if the app can see it. Avoid repeated resets that could complicate data recovery.

Logo appears but the watch never reaches the clock
A logo followed by looping or shutdown can indicate incomplete firmware, a battery unable to sustain boot, or hardware failure. Leave it charging, perform one official restart, and, if it boots, sync before doing anything else. Repeated loops are a reason to stop experimenting and seek support.
Dim, flickering, or intermittent screen
Possible causes include firmware instability, display or backlight deterioration, moisture or impact damage, and power instability. Google groups blank, unresponsive, rebooting, and flickering screens together and recommends charging, cleaning, restarting, and checking firmware in its screen troubleshooting guidance.
Red “X” or update-related failure
A red “X” is different from a completely unresponsive black screen. For that error, Google’s recovery path is to remove the device from the Fitbit/Google Health app, forget or unpair it in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then add it again through Set Up a Device: charging and red-X troubleshooting.
For an update that stalled or left a boot loop, update the Google Health app, keep the watch close to the phone—approximately 2 to 3 feet—and retry while the watch is stably charging. Updates can take an hour or more. Follow Google’s update troubleshooting. Do not unpair a totally dead watch as a first response; it cannot help if the device has no power or cannot boot.
If the screen comes back
- Open the Fitbit/Google Health app and sync immediately to preserve recent activity.
- Install the latest version of the app.
- In the app, open Connections, select the watch, then press and hold on the device screen and pull down to check for an update.
- Keep the watch charged, near the phone, and leave the app running while firmware installation completes.
- Monitor whether blackouts, flicker, or boot loops return.
Factory reset: only as a last resort
A factory reset can erase local settings and data and is impractical when the display cannot be navigated. Consider it only when the screen works, the watch has already synced, and official restart and update steps have failed. Use Google’s model-specific instructions or a support-directed procedure; do not present undocumented button combinations as guaranteed recovery methods.
When to stop troubleshooting
- Swelling, a cracked case or display, liquid intrusion, corrosion, burn smell, or strong heat while charging.
- No response after the correct charger, one-hour wall charge, contact cleaning, and official restart.
- Repeated boot loops after a failed update.
- A watch that vibrates or syncs but never displays an image after one restart.
Stop using a physically compromised device and contact Google/Fitbit or a qualified repair provider. The official guidance reviewed does not provide a consumer screen-replacement procedure for Versa models.

Warranty, support, and replace-versus-repair decisions
Start with the Google warranty-claim process before buying accessories or paying for repair. Warranty terms vary by country, purchase date, condition, and product; Google’s Fitbit Limited Warranty generally states one year for new products and two years for purchases in the European Economic Area, with separate rules for refurbished products. Accidental damage, liquid damage, normal battery aging, and expired coverage may be excluded.
Google’s published minimum security-support table lists Versa 4 through at least February 2028, Versa 3 and Versa 2 through December 2025, Versa Lite through December 2022, and the original Versa through December 2021: device security-update dates. These are security commitments, not guarantees of app compatibility, repair availability, or legal warranty rights.
For a replacement charger, match the exact model rather than searching for “a Versa cable.” A new cable is a sensible diagnostic purchase only when the watch has no physical damage and the existing charger or pins are suspect. It is unlikely to revive a cracked, swollen, corroded, or otherwise nonresponsive device.
Google’s Pixel Care+ page currently shows Fitbit Versa 4 coverage signals of $29 for two years, a $0 service fee for post-warranty malfunctions, and a $29 accidental-damage service fee. Availability, eligibility, purchase timing, and region restrictions must be confirmed at checkout; protection generally cannot be added retroactively to an already-black watch. See Google’s Fitbit Versa 4 Pixel Care+ information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does restarting a Fitbit Versa erase data?
No. The official forced restart reboots the watch and is not a factory reset. Sync the watch as soon as the app detects it.

Can I use a Versa 2 charger on an original Versa?
No. Google identifies the Versa 2 charger as incompatible with the original Versa and Versa Lite. Match the charger to the exact model.
How long should I charge a black-screen Versa?
Use the correct charger from a wall outlet for at least 60 minutes, then try the official restart while it remains connected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if the Fitbit app still detects the watch?
Sync immediately, then restart once and check firmware. Detection suggests the watch may still be operating even if its display has failed.
Should I factory-reset a black Versa?
No, not while the display is unusable. A reset is a last resort after syncing and only when you can navigate the screen or Google support directs a recovery procedure.
Can the Versa screen be replaced?
Google’s published guidance does not provide a consumer screen-replacement procedure. Check warranty or authorized repair options for your country before paying for third-party work.
