“Preparing” is not automatically a frozen Apple Watch update. Apple says watchOS updates can take several minutes to an hour. Leave the watch on its charger, keep the paired iPhone nearby on Wi‑Fi, and avoid restarting either device while installation is visibly progressing. If the screen is unchanged well beyond that window, repeats, or the watch is unresponsive, work through the recovery steps below—from a normal restart to deleting the update, freeing storage, and finally unpairing.
Is “Preparing” actually stuck?
The label usually means the downloaded update is being prepared for transfer or installation. Apple does not publish a separate guaranteed duration for this exact label, so elapsed time alone cannot prove failure.

Update duration varies with the watch model, download size, connection, available storage, battery state, and whether the iPhone also needs an iOS update.
Before interrupting the update
- Update the paired iPhone to the latest iOS version compatible with your watch.
- Charge the Apple Watch to at least 50% and leave it connected to its charger.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi‑Fi, keep Bluetooth enabled, and place the iPhone and watch close together.
- Make sure the watch has available storage.
- If either device uses public- or developer-beta software, check Apple’s beta instructions before changing profiles.
During a visibly progressing installation, do not quit the Watch app or restart either device. Apple’s current requirements and procedure are at Apple’s Apple Watch update guide.

Fix 1: Restart the Apple Watch and iPhone
Use a normal restart first when the update has not begun or is clearly stalled. The watch cannot be restarted while charging, so disconnect it briefly, then reconnect it before trying the update again.
- Press and hold the watch’s side button until the power controls appear.
- Tap the power button and drag the Power Off slider.
- After the watch shuts down, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
- Restart the paired iPhone.
- Open Watch, choose My Watch → General → Software Update, and retry.

Fix 2: Force-restart only an unresponsive watch
A force restart is an emergency recovery step, not a routine way to speed up an active installation. Use it if the watch does not respond to normal controls or a normal restart is impossible.

- Hold the side button and Digital Crown together.
- Keep holding for at least 10 seconds, until the display goes black and the Apple logo reappears.
- Release both buttons and allow the watch to finish restarting.
Do not repeatedly force-restart a watch that is visibly progressing through installation. Apple documents this procedure in its Apple Watch User Guide.

Apple provides a way to remove a failed or stalled update package without erasing the watch. The item’s name can differ by iOS and watchOS version, so look for the downloaded software-update file.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Choose General → Storage.
- Locate the downloaded watchOS update and delete it.
- Restart the iPhone and watch if the update still appears queued.
- Return to My Watch → General → Software Update and download it again.

Fix 4: Free Apple Watch storage
Insufficient space can stop an update even when the download itself succeeded. On the watch, open Settings → General → Storage to see what is consuming capacity.
- Remove downloaded music and synced photo albums first; they can occupy substantial space.
- Delete apps you no longer need.
- Restart the watch after cleanup, reconnect it to the charger, and retry the update.
- Do not rely on a universal “required GB” figure: Apple does not publish one number for every watchOS release.

Special case: Apple Watch Series 3
Apple directs Series 3 owners who cannot update because of storage to proceed to unpairing and updating rather than relying only on deleting media and apps. Series 3 also has much older hardware and a narrower software-compatibility path than newer models.

Fix 5: Unpair, update, and pair again
Unpairing is Apple’s advanced recovery path after restart, update-file deletion, and storage cleanup fail. It erases the watch, although the iPhone creates a new backup first. Have the Apple Account password available.
- Keep the iPhone and watch close together.
- Open Watch and tap My Watch → All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the affected watch, then Unpair Apple Watch.
- On a GPS + Cellular model, choose whether to keep the mobile plan. Keep it if you intend to pair this watch again with the same account; carrier arrangements can vary.
- Confirm and enter the Apple Account password if requested. This also addresses Activation Lock.
- Pair the watch again and install watchOS when setup offers the update.
- Restore the newly created backup if appropriate.

Set up as new or restore?
Choose Set Up as New first when updates repeatedly fail during restoration or setup. Updating a clean configuration helps distinguish a software or backup problem from a device problem. After the update, you can unpair again and restore if desired. Restoring is more convenient and preserves supported settings and data, but a damaged configuration may reintroduce the failure; no backup method guarantees that every item returns exactly as before. Health and Activity history depend on your iCloud or encrypted computer-backup configuration.

If the watch changes to the Apple logo
An Apple-logo loop is a different symptom from a static “Preparing” label. If the watch is unresponsive, hold the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Apple logo returns. If the logo persists, unpair and pair again. Continued failure after that warrants Apple service. Follow Apple’s Apple-logo troubleshooting.
If you see “Unable to Verify Update”
This message points primarily to an internet or verification problem. Confirm Wi‑Fi access, restart the iPhone and watch, check storage, and retry. If verification still fails, use the unpair-and-update procedure above. Apple’s sequence is documented at Unable to Verify Update.
Beta software and profiles
Beta enrollment can change which watchOS builds are offered. Do not remove a beta profile unless the iPhone or watch is actually enrolled. If it is, follow Apple’s current beta instructions; removing a profile does not necessarily downgrade software already installed. Apple includes profile guidance with its update instructions.
Check compatibility before assuming failure
A watch may be unable to install a release because it is unsupported, not because “Preparing” is frozen. As of Apple’s current watchOS 26 guidance, compatible watches are Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) and later, and Apple Watch Ultra and later. watchOS 26 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (3rd generation) or later, running iOS 26. Older combinations may receive only an earlier watchOS release. Confirm the exact model and iPhone software on Apple’s compatibility page.
When to contact Apple
- The watch remains stuck on the Apple logo or unresponsive after force restart and re-pairing.
- Several update attempts fail after the official recovery sequence.
- The watch has physical damage, liquid exposure, or unusual battery symptoms.
- The model is outside the supported software path and you need repair or replacement advice.
Use Apple Watch Service and Repair or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Out-of-warranty estimates require inspection; taxes, shipping, and provider fees can vary. Avoid unofficial firmware-repair utilities, which are not an Apple-supported solution and may affect warranty or AppleCare coverage.
