Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Short answer: cellular works only on an LTE/eSIM Galaxy Watch, not a Bluetooth-only model. Pair the watch with a compatible Android phone, open Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings (or Home) → Mobile plans, and complete your carrier’s eSIM enrollment. In the United States, Samsung’s standard activation path lists AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, but eligibility still depends on the exact watch SKU, phone, account, plan and region. Newer LTE watches can often work away from the phone after setup; Watch4 and Watch5 cannot be configured as fully standalone watches under Samsung’s current guidance.
Last checked: August 18, 2026. Carrier screens, supported models and prices can change.
Before you begin
- An LTE Galaxy Watch (the box or listing must say “LTE” or cellular).
- A compatible Android phone with Google Mobile Services; current Wear OS watches do not pair with iPhone.
- The current Galaxy Wearable app, a Samsung account and, when requested, a Google account.
- An active phone SIM or eSIM, Wi-Fi or mobile data, and a carrier account authorized to add a wearable.
- A qualifying phone and watch plan. Have the watch IMEI, EID and ICCID available if support must provision it manually.
- A carrier QR code if your activation flow requires one.
Samsung says its described activation flow requires a SIM in the phone and an internet connection. Find the watch identifiers at Settings → About watch → Device, or in Galaxy Wearable under Watch settings or Home → About watch → Device. EID and ICCID fields can vary by model and activation state. See Samsung’s activation instructions.
Check that your watch actually supports cellular
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi versus LTE
| Model type | What it contains | What it can do |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth/Wi-Fi | No cellular modem or wearable eSIM service | Uses the phone or Wi-Fi; cannot be upgraded to cellular by software |
| LTE | Cellular hardware and embedded eSIM | Can use mobile data and, when the carrier provisions voice, calls and messages away from the phone |
Ways to verify the SKU
- Check the product box, receipt or Samsung listing for “LTE.”
- On the watch, open Settings → About watch → Device.
- In Galaxy Wearable, open Watch settings or Home → About watch → Device.
- Record the model number, IMEI, EID and ICCID. If Mobile plans never appears and the carrier rejects the IMEI, recheck that you did not buy a Bluetooth-only variant.
Generation and phone compatibility matter
“Galaxy Watch” is not one compatibility category. Samsung’s current Wear OS guidance says Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 cannot be set up as standalone watches, although an LTE version can provide connectivity when paired with a compatible phone. LTE versions of Watch6, Watch6 Classic, Watch7, Watch Ultra and newer generations may support phone-free operation when the carrier and plan allow it. Watch8 and Watch8 Classic LTE models are marketed for calls, messages and data away from the phone, subject to those same limits. Older Tizen watches, including LTE versions of the 2018 Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active2, use different apps and compatibility rules.

Android requirements vary by model and by Samsung page revision. Examples include Android 6.0 with at least 1.5 GB RAM for Watch4, Android 8.0 with at least 1.5 GB RAM for Watch5 and Watch6, and Android 11 or later for Watch7 and Watch Ultra. Samsung lists Android 12 or later for Galaxy Watch8 with Galaxy smartphones. Verify your exact model in Samsung’s compatibility table and Wear OS guidance; do not apply one minimum version to every watch.
Pair the watch and add a cellular plan
- Charge and turn on the watch.
- Install or update Galaxy Wearable on the Android phone.
- Open Galaxy Wearable, select the watch and complete Bluetooth pairing.
- Sign in to Samsung and Google accounts when prompted, then install available watch updates.
- Open Watch settings → Mobile plans. Some app versions expose the same control from the Home tab.
- Allow Galaxy Wearable to search for an eligible network and select your carrier’s activation option.
- Sign in to the carrier account or enter the requested account, billing and device details.
- Choose number sharing or a standalone arrangement where offered, accept terms and complete authorization or payment.
- Wait for the eSIM profile to download. Restart the watch if prompted.
- Confirm a mobile-signal icon or carrier name, then test service with Bluetooth disabled and the phone out of range.
Galaxy Wearable starts the process, but the carrier decides whether the model, IMEI, account and plan are eligible. An LTE label alone does not guarantee activation.
Carrier-specific activation paths
AT&T: QR-code enrollment
AT&T’s documented sequence is Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Mobile plans → Use code. Scan the carrier QR code, choose Use plan, select Done, and approve the requested restart. The watch must restart after connecting to the mobile network. Follow AT&T’s current instructions.

Verizon: Number Share or standalone
Verizon Number Share links the watch to an active Verizon phone line on the same account. A standalone arrangement is separate and cannot be combined with Number Share. Verizon may require a QR code, and removing a plan can require a new eSIM assignment before service is added again. Use the Number Share and standalone guidance and the Watch8 activation guide.
T-Mobile: use the exact model tutorial
T-Mobile publishes model-specific eSIM instructions. Use the guide for your generation rather than assuming Watch7 and Watch8 show identical screens: Galaxy Watch7 and Galaxy Watch8.
Number sharing versus a standalone line
| Feature | Number sharing | Standalone line |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Extension of an existing phone | Independent watch service |
| Number | Usually associated with the phone number | Separate number or account arrangement is common |
| Setup | Phone and watch generally must be on the same carrier account | Still usually requires initial phone pairing and carrier approval |
| Phone-free use | Depends on carrier, model and whether the phone must remain powered or reachable | Designed for phone-independent use, but availability and voice support are narrower |
| Best fit | Most existing smartphone users | Children or users who regularly leave a phone behind |
| Primary risk | Account and continuity restrictions | Limited model, region and carrier compatibility |
Samsung cautions that carriers may not support standalone voice calling everywhere. Calls and messages may also behave differently when the paired phone is off, disconnected or outside the carrier’s required service conditions.

What should work away from the phone?
On a properly provisioned LTE watch, supported combinations of model, carrier, plan, region and app can provide calls, messages, streaming music or podcasts, navigation, selected assistant functions, SmartThings control, workout and health tracking, and Samsung Wallet where its payment requirements are met. These are not universal guarantees.
Run a real phone-free test
- Turn off Bluetooth on the phone, or leave it behind.
- Enable the watch’s mobile network setting and check for an LTE or signal icon.
- Place a call.
- Send and receive a text.
- Open a network-dependent app and confirm data and location work.
- If a function fails, repeat the test outdoors in known carrier coverage before changing settings.
Troubleshoot activation and service failures
There is no Mobile plans option
- Confirm the watch is an LTE SKU, not Bluetooth-only.
- Update Galaxy Wearable, the watch software and the phone.
- Check that the phone has an active SIM/eSIM and internet access.
- Verify the model, region and IMEI with the carrier.
The QR code is rejected or already used
Do not keep rescanning indefinitely. Samsung says resetting the watch or its mobile network may require a newly generated QR code. Request a fresh code from the carrier and use the carrier’s exact sequence; AT&T, for example, requires Use code → scan → Use plan → Done → restart.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The carrier says the device is not eligible
- Restart both phone and watch.
- Recheck the model number, IMEI, EID and ICCID.
- Confirm the phone and watch are on the required account and carrier.
- Ask support to check wearable eligibility for that exact IMEI, not just issue a standard phone eSIM.
- Check for an old eSIM profile, imported regional hardware, financing or a lost-device block.
- If standalone service was selected, confirm the plan supports standalone voice and messaging in your area.
LTE appears, but calls fail
Data may be provisioned while voice is not. Other causes include incomplete number sharing, a carrier that requires the phone to remain online, unsupported standalone voice, roaming or weak coverage. Confirm the watch is using cellular rather than Bluetooth, then ask the carrier to verify voice provisioning.

Service disappeared after a reset, repair or new phone
Capture account details and identifiers before resetting. A factory reset, mobile-network reset or phone re-pair can remove provisioning; restoring a phone backup does not necessarily restore the watch eSIM. The carrier may need to assign a new eSIM or QR code.
The watch was imported
LTE bands, certification and carrier databases differ by country. A watch that works in one market may be rejected elsewhere. Verify the exact regional model before buying or importing.

Compare the LTE hardware premium, recurring wearable-plan charge, coverage and battery trade-offs with how often you actually leave the phone behind. Cellular streaming, navigation and weak-signal conditions can consume more battery, but the amount varies by model and usage.

Choose Bluetooth instead when
- Your phone is almost always nearby.
- You want to avoid a recurring line charge.
- You are buying for an iPhone user or a phone that fails the exact Android requirements.
- Your preferred carrier does not recognize the watch’s regional SKU.
Choose LTE when
- You exercise, commute or run errands without the phone often.
- Your carrier confirms the precise watch IMEI and desired number-sharing or standalone plan.
- You accept additional cost and potentially higher battery consumption for independent connectivity.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Bluetooth Galaxy Watch be upgraded to LTE?
No. Cellular hardware and an eSIM are built into the LTE variant; an app or carrier plan cannot add them to a Bluetooth-only watch.
Can I use an LTE Galaxy Watch internationally?
Do not assume so. Roaming, LTE bands, voice support and eSIM activation are country- and carrier-specific. Confirm international service for the exact model and plan before travel.
Can I change carriers later?
Usually you must remove the existing wearable provisioning and enroll again with the new carrier. A new eSIM assignment or QR code may be required, and the new carrier must support the watch’s regional model.
