Satellite-carried wandering hours became its signature, but they never defined every project: the brand also explored retrograde minutes, chronometry, digital displays and experimental mechanisms. This is a selected history of the major turns documented through 2023, not an exhaustive catalogue of every reference, edition or production run.
How URWERK began: the idea and the first watches
URWERK’s account of its origins starts with a meeting between watchmaker Felix Baumgartner and designer Martin Frei at a student party in December 1995. Baumgartner’s brother Thomas was also part of the founding group. The brand says the idea took shape on January 1, 1996; the company was officially founded in 1997. That year, the UR-101 and UR-102 were presented at Baselworld with a minimal wandering-hour display. URWERK’s 2023 UR-102 Reloaded document also dates the collection’s launch to Baselworld 1997. URWERK’s history and the 2023 UR-102 Reloaded document provide the brand’s accounts.
The company’s early direction was an artistic as well as technical gamble. Co-founder and master watchmaker Felix Baumgartner recalled: “We were not businessmen. It was extremely risky because we had no idea how our watches would be accepted.” The quotation appears on the brand’s history page.
URWERK’s collection, year by year
The chronology below follows the principal milestones identified by URWERK. A year marks the brand’s stated historical milestone, not necessarily the launch date of every variant in a family. Some names refer to collaborative or special projects rather than standard numbered collection watches.

What wandering hours mean in URWERK watches
In a wandering-hours display, the hour indication travels across the dial rather than remaining at a fixed hand position. URWERK made that idea its most recognizable design language by placing the hours on satellites or revolving structures. As a satellite moves through its sequence, the display presents the current hour in relation to the minutes. The precise construction and surrounding indications differ from one watch to another: the cone-shaped satellites of the UR-103, for example, are not mechanically interchangeable with every later satellite system.

Wandering hours are therefore a recurring approach, not a complete definition of the collection. A watch’s display architecture, winding method, added indications and case concept must be considered model by model. The broader record includes conventional mechanical functions arranged in unusual ways, chronometric feedback, electronic assistance and digital displays.
How the collection moved beyond one display
Additional information around the time display
Several watches pair their principal time indication with information about the watch itself or the world around it. The UR-103 adds a power-reserve indicator and setting aids; the UR-202 includes day/night and moonphase indications; the UR-110 adds running seconds and an oil-change indication. These functions change what the wearer can read, not just how the hour and minute are presented.

Winding and chronometric feedback
URWERK also made winding and rate control part of the design conversation. The UR-202’s pneumatic system lets the wearer adjust winding rate through its turbines, while the UR-210’s indicator reports winding efficiency over the preceding two hours. EMC takes a different route: URWERK describes it as measuring rate on demand and supplying information that can be used to adjust the watch. In the EMC Time Hunter, the brand describes a fully mechanical watch with electronically enhanced indications.
Other display and case concepts
Some projects depart more decisively from the satellite-hours image. The UR-100 links time to the distance Earth travels; the UR-112 uses digital time displays; and UR-150 Scorpion pairs a retrograde display with a fast satellite reset. The UR-T8’s transformable construction makes interaction with the case part of its anniversary concept. These are different solutions to displaying or engaging with time, not variations that should be collapsed into one mechanism.

What “the entire collection” can—and cannot—mean
URWERK’s model names often cover families with multiple versions. A family name alone does not specify a watch’s material, movement, edition size or production total, so those details should not be inferred from a name in a timeline. The brand’s UR-Legends historical-pieces page identifies pieces no longer in production, while its broader archive includes model families and variants. The timeline here is consequently a guide to major collection turns through 2023, not a complete reference of every limited edition or production run.
URWERK’s homepage currently describes annual output as approximately 200 timepieces. That is the brand’s approximate present-tense figure, as published on its homepage and accessed in 2026; it does not establish production for each year from 1997 to 2023.

Why the 1997–2023 history matters
Across these milestones, the collection’s continuity lies less in one universal movement than in a willingness to rethink the presentation of time. Wandering hours gave URWERK a recognizable visual signature; chronometry projects, retrograde indications, digital displays and experimental cases widened the range. Reading the history accurately means holding both ideas together: a distinctive recurring language, and a collection whose individual watches can solve the problem of showing time in markedly different ways.
