A chronograph measures elapsed time; a chronometer is a precision timekeeper that has been officially inspected and attested. They are not interchangeable terms. Likewise, automatic describes how a mechanical watch is wound, while quartz and mechanical describe different timekeeping systems.
This glossary follows a watch from its movement and power to the parts you see and the language used for wearing, resistance and precision.
How does a watch keep time?
The movement is the watch’s internal timekeeping mechanism: its “works,” as the British Watch and Clock Makers’ Guild puts it. The case holds and protects it; the dial, hands and other external parts show or control what it does. ISO 6426-2:2026 groups watch terminology across these internal and external components.
Quartz movement
A quartz movement draws power from a battery. A quartz oscillator provides the regular timing reference, and a stepping motor transfers energy through the display train. The watch’s hands or other indications show the time regulated by that system. Patek Philippe’s glossary describes the quartz system and its components.

Mechanical movement
A mechanical movement stores energy in a wound mainspring, usually housed in a barrel. A gear train transmits that energy. The escapement releases it in controlled steps and sustains the oscillations of the balance and its spring, also called a hairspring. Together, the balance and spring regulate the movement’s rhythm. The escapement’s construction varies; a familiar lever type uses an escape wheel and pallets. The British Watch and Clock Makers’ Guild defines the going train as the wheels and pinions that drive the escapement: Guild glossary.
Hand-wound and automatic
A hand-wound or manual-winding watch relies on the wearer to wind its mainspring, commonly by turning the crown. An automatic or self-winding watch is mechanical too; automatic describes its ordinary winding method, not a different timekeeping system. It is not another word for quartz. ISO 6426-2:2026 distinguishes self-winding watches from watches requiring manual winding: ISO 6426-2:2026.
Mechanical and quartz are categories of timekeeping system; hand-wound and automatic are ways of winding a mechanical watch. The terms answer different questions.
Jewels
Jewels are small bearing surfaces used at pivots in many movements. Their presence is a component description, not, by itself, a complete measure of a watch’s quality.

What is the difference between a chronograph and a chronometer?
A chronograph is a function for measuring and displaying an elapsed interval independently of the watch’s ordinary time-of-day indication. ISO 6426-2:2026 describes it as a timekeeping instrument with a time counter for this purpose. Many chronographs use a central elapsed-seconds hand and smaller counters, but layouts vary. Pushers often start, stop or reset the function.
A chronometer, by contrast, describes a precision timekeeper that has been officially inspected and given an individual attestation. ISO defines it as the official name for a precision timekeeping instrument regulated for various conditions of use. In the Swiss context, Patek Philippe identifies COSC as a body that issues rating certificates one watch at a time. The word does not mean stopwatch or chronograph. See ISO 6426-2:2026 and Patek Philippe’s glossary.
In short: a chronograph is an interval-measuring function; a chronometer is an officially attested precision status. A watch can have one, both or neither.
What is a watch complication?
A complication is an added function beyond a straightforward display of the time. Date displays, calendars and chronographs are examples. The term is used broadly, and brands may classify functions differently; when comparing watches, identify the function rather than relying on the label alone. ISO 6426-2:2026 defines complications in relation to additional functions, while NOMOS Glashütte’s glossary notes that there is no uniform definition of which or how many functions qualify a watch as a “Grande Complication.”

Calendar and perpetual calendar
A calendar may display the date and, depending on the design, the day, month or more. A simple date display indicates the date; a perpetual calendar accounts for differing month lengths and leap years. These are different levels of calendar function, not interchangeable labels.
Grande Complication
Grande Complication is a heritage term, not a universal technical threshold shared by all brands. NOMOS states that brands interpret it differently. When a watch carries the label, check which functions that particular maker includes rather than assuming a fixed combination.
What are the parts of a watch?
Case, bezel and case-back
The case is the protective structure in which the movement is mounted. A common case description breaks it into the case middle, bezel and case-back, though terminology and construction can vary. The case-back closes the side opposite the display; a transparent one lets the wearer see the movement through a watch-glass.
The bezel is the ring at the glass side of the case. Some bezels are fixed; a rotating bezel can carry graduations used to read elapsed time, direction or another scale, or to control a function. A bezel is not necessarily movable. ISO’s terminology and Patek Philippe’s case description are available at ISO and Patek Philippe.

- IMPORTANT – HOW A WATCH WINDER WORKS: This winder does NOT actively wind your watch – it only keeps the automatic rotor of mechanical watches in motion. Manually wind the crown 20-40 times before placing the watch inside to ensure sufficient power reserve. Otherwise, the watch may still stop even inside the winder.
- INTELLIGENT INTERVAL ROTATION: Programmed with pauses to prevent over-winding. Mode B: 2 min clockwise, 6 min pause, 2 min counterclockwise. Dial, hands and rehaut
The dial is the marked display over which the hands move. ISO also recognizes the term by extension for a casing element bearing indications on some digital watches. A hand is an indicator that moves across a graduated dial or scale. The rehaut, also called a dial ring, is the ring around the dial and may carry markings or graduations.
Watch-glass or crystal
The watch-glass is the transparent material protecting the dial and hands; a similar glass may be fitted in a case-back so the movement can be seen. Crystal is common consumer wording, while “watch-glass” is ISO’s glossary term. Neither word, by itself, states the material used.
Crown and pushers
The crown is the knob connected to winding and setting controls. Depending on the watch, it can wind the mainspring, set the time or operate a function. A pusher or push-button is a control pressed to initiate an action. Chronographs commonly have pushers, but a pusher is not necessarily a chronograph control.

Band, bracelet and strap
The band is the part that secures a watch to the wrist. Bracelet is used mainly for a metal band; strap is another common term. ISO 6426-2:2026 records these usages, which can vary in everyday speech.

Water-resistant and diver’s watch
Water-resistant means a watch resists water penetration; it does not mean waterproof. Resistance depends on the stated rating, the watch’s condition and the activity. ISO points to ISO 22810 for further information on water-resistant watches. The British Watch and Clock Makers’ Guild also cautions that “waterproof” is vague. A general water-resistance label alone does not establish suitability for every underwater activity.
A diver’s watch is designed to withstand SCUBA diving and is tied to the specific requirements of ISO 6425. That is a more specific category than a generic water-resistance claim. Check the maker’s stated rating and intended use rather than inferring dive suitability from the word “water-resistant.” See ISO 6426-2:2026, ISO 22810 and ISO 6425.
What do accuracy and rate mean?
A watch’s rate is the change in indicated time over a unit of time. Daily rate expresses that change over 24 hours. A watch being ahead or behind at one moment describes its indication at that moment; it is not, by itself, a daily rate. When a maker publishes a gain or loss per day, the figure should be read with its direction and the stated test conditions, if provided. ISO 6426-2:2026 supplies the terminology; it does not make any one daily-rate figure a universal performance promise.
Magnetic resistance is also a defined specification, not a guarantee that a watch is unaffected by every magnetic field. ISO distinguishes magnetic-resistant and enhanced magnetic-resistant watches by reference to specified field strengths. For practical use, rely on the maker’s published rating rather than generalizing beyond it. Consult ISO 6426-2:2026 and the watch’s own documentation.
