Wear OS 3: Everything You Need to Know (February 2024)

Wear OS 3 brought Google and Samsung’s major smartwatch rebuild, but model-specific apps, phone limits and factory-reset upgrades make compatibility and buying decisions more complicated than the name suggests.

Wear OS 3 was Google and Samsung’s major smartwatch-platform rebuild, announced in 2021. It brought a faster interface, improved power management, a broader Google Play app ecosystem and more manufacturer customization. By February 2024 it was no longer the newest release—Wear OS 4 was shipping on newer watches—so buying advice depends on price, hardware and the manufacturer’s remaining support. The experience also varies substantially between Samsung, Google, Fossil, Mobvoi and other brands.

What is Wear OS 3?

Wear OS 3 is an Android-based smartwatch operating-system generation developed jointly by Google and Samsung. It combined ideas from Google’s previous Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen platform. Samsung’s interface is called One UI Watch, but Galaxy Watch4 and later models use Wear OS underneath; Galaxy watches released before the Watch4 generation used Tizen instead.

“Wear OS 3” describes a generation that includes releases such as Wear OS 3.0, 3.2 and 3.5. They are related, but features are not identical. Google allows manufacturers to customize the platform, so a Pixel Watch, Galaxy Watch, Fossil Gen 6 and TicWatch can look and behave differently. Google’s launch overview is at blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/wear-os/wear-io21/.

What changed from Wear OS 2?

Area Wear OS 3 change Important qualification
Performance Faster startup and smoother interaction on compatible hardware. Google claimed app launches up to 30% faster on newer chipsets; that was a 2021 platform claim, not a guarantee for every watch.
Battery More efficient use of low-power processor cores. Runtime still depends on chipset, display, sensors, LTE and usage.
Apps Expanded Google Play selection, updated Tiles and newer development tools. App and feature availability varies by watch, country, account and version.
Google services Redesigned Pay (later branded Google Wallet), Maps, YouTube Music, Calendar, Home and Assistant support on selected devices. Not every service is available on every model or phone.
Health Stronger sensor and fitness integration, with Fitbit on Google’s own watches and Samsung Health on Galaxy models. Hardware, accounts and local regulation determine advanced measurements.
Customization Manufacturers gained more freedom over interfaces and companion apps. This is why Wear OS 3 is not one uniform user experience.

Google’s announcement also highlighted YouTube Music smart downloads, new Tiles and apps such as Strava, adidas Running and Bitmoji. Google warns that availability can differ on individual Wear 3 devices (support.google.com/wearos/answer/6321140?hl=en).

Which watches run Wear OS 3?

Models that shipped with Wear OS 3 or a 3.x release

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic.
  • Samsung Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro.
  • Google Pixel Watch, launched with Wear OS 3.5.
  • Fossil Gen 6 and selected Fossil Group models.
  • Skagen Falster Gen 6 and selected related models.
  • Selected Mobvoi TicWatch models.
  • Selected Montblanc, TAG Heuer, Citizen and other newer Wear OS watches.

Always verify the exact model and region. Google’s device guide directs owners to the manufacturer for the correct companion application and support path (support.google.com/wearos/answer/10106605?hl=en).

Models you should not assume are eligible

  • Most older Wear OS 2 watches have no automatic path to Wear OS 3.
  • Fossil Gen 5 and earlier models should not be treated as upgrade candidates without model-specific confirmation.
  • Samsung watches before Galaxy Watch4 run Tizen, not Wear OS.
  • A processor name or an announced rollout does not prove that your regional model has received the update.

Can an existing watch upgrade?

Only if the manufacturer lists that precise model and variant. A Wear OS 3 migration is a major reset, not an ordinary update. Google says it:

  1. Factory-resets the watch and erases locally stored data, apps and settings.
  2. Unpairs the watch from the phone.
  3. Requires uninstalling the old Wear OS phone app.
  4. Requires installing the manufacturer’s replacement companion app.
  5. Cannot be rolled back to the previous Wear OS version.

Prepare before upgrading

  • Charge both devices and install pending phone and watch updates.
  • Record the exact model number and regional version.
  • Back up whatever the manufacturer or health service supports; do not assume Wear OS 4-style backup exists on Wear OS 3.
  • Note watch faces, apps, alarms, notification settings and payment cards.
  • Confirm the replacement companion app is available in your country.
  • Make sure you know the Google, Samsung, Fossil or Mobvoi account used by the watch.
  • Expect to re-add payment cards and redownload music or maps.

Google’s reset and no-rollback warning is documented at support.google.com/wearos/answer/6321140?hl=en.

Phone compatibility

Android

Wear OS 3 watches generally require a compatible Android phone with Google Mobile Services. Android-version requirements differ by model. Samsung confirms that Galaxy Watch4 and newer Wear OS watches require a phone supporting Google Mobile Services (samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003348/).

iPhone

Do not treat Wear OS 3 as broadly iPhone-compatible. Wear OS 3 watches do not use the standard Wear OS iPhone app, and Google states that Wallet and Maps are not supported on Wear 3 when paired with iOS (support.google.com/wearos/answer/6056630?co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS&hl=en). An Apple Watch remains the more predictable choice for a fully integrated iPhone experience.

Samsung-specific limits

ECG, blood-pressure tools, some Samsung Health functions and other Galaxy features can depend on a Samsung phone, Samsung account, supported hardware and local regulatory approval. They are not universal Wear OS features.

Apps, payments and everyday features

Depending on the watch and region, Wear OS 3 can provide Google Play, Maps, Wallet, Assistant, YouTube Music, Spotify, WhatsApp, Strava, Calendar, Home, Gboard, calls, notifications, phone-media controls and customizable Tiles. Manufacturer software may include Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health, Fitbit, Fossil Smartwatches or Mobvoi Health. The Wear OS overview is at wearos.google.com/intl/en_us/.

Google Assistant is selective rather than universal. Google’s support page lists support for certain Wear OS 3.0-or-later watches and says availability depends on the manufacturer (support.google.com/assistant/answer/7314149?hl=en). Wallet, Maps, LTE, calls and Home can likewise vary by country, bank, phone, account, hardware and software version.

Health and fitness capabilities

Wear OS 3 watches may track heart rate, sleep, steps, activities and workouts; models with GPS can record routes. Google’s Health Services system service, introduced for Wear OS 3 development, gives apps more efficient access to sensor data (android-developers.googleblog.com/2024/02/wear-os-hybrid-interface-boosting-power-and-performance.html).

ECG, blood pressure, skin temperature, body composition and irregular-rhythm detection require specific sensors, software, accounts and regional authorization. These features are wellness tools, not medical diagnoses.

How the major brands differ

Google Pixel Watch

Pixel Watch offers the most Google-centered experience, with Fitbit integration, Assistant, Maps, Wallet and Home. Early models have limited case-size choice, and some Fitbit features require Fitbit Premium. Google described the original model’s Wear OS 3.5 and Fitbit integration at blog.google/products-and-platforms/devices/pixel/google-pixel-watch/.

Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5

Galaxy watches suit Samsung-phone owners who want multiple sizes, LTE options, One UI Watch and Samsung Health. Some features are reduced on non-Samsung phones, and Samsung duplicates several Google services with its own apps. Samsung’s model distinction is documented at samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003348/.

Fossil and Skagen Gen 6

These watches provide traditional styling and use the Fossil Smartwatches companion app after the Wear OS 3 transition. Remaining stock, update life and battery condition deserve particular scrutiny; not every Fossil Group model received the same update.

Mobvoi TicWatch

Selected TicWatch models emphasize larger batteries and dual-display designs. Eligibility, update timing and companion-app behavior vary by model; check Mobvoi’s comparison page rather than relying on the family name (mobvoi.com/pages/compare).

Wear OS 3 versus Wear OS 4 in February 2024

Consideration Wear OS 3 Wear OS 4
Position Major 2021 rebuild; mature generation by 2024. Newer generation already shipping on newer watches.
Backup Reset and backup behavior is not universal. Google announced broader backup and restore support.
Hardware Often older processors and sensors. Usually paired with newer hardware, though real battery gains vary.
Buying value Sensible when substantially discounted and adequately supported. Preferable when price is close or long-term updates matter.

Google announced Wear OS 4 backup and restore improvements (blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/wear-os/wear-os-update-google-io-2023/). The OnePlus Watch 2 launched in February 2024 with Wear OS 4 and a dual-chip design, illustrating why newer hardware can be a better purchase (android-developers.googleblog.com/2024/02/wear-os-hybrid-interface-boosting-power-and-performance.html).

When setup or migration fails

  • Confirm the watch is not still paired with an old phone; restart both devices.
  • Update the manufacturer companion app, Google Play Services and Play Store, then toggle Bluetooth.
  • Install the correct OEM app—Galaxy Wearable, Fossil Smartwatches, Mobvoi Health or another specified app—not automatically the generic Wear OS app.
  • Remove an incomplete Bluetooth entry only when the manufacturer’s instructions say to do so.
  • If an interrupted migration leaves setup stuck, a factory reset may be required.
  • Check country and phone compatibility before treating the watch as defective.
  • Contact the manufacturer for a watch frozen during a major OS migration.

Buying guidance for February 2024

  • Choose Wear OS 3 when it is heavily discounted, has the sensors, size, LTE and battery life you need, and the manufacturer’s support is acceptable.
  • Prefer Wear OS 4 or newer when prices are similar, long-term updates matter, or newer hardware materially improves battery, GPS, display or health tracking.
  • Consider another platform if you use an iPhone, need multi-day or multi-week battery life, want advanced training analytics, or dislike manufacturer-specific apps.

For used Wear OS 3 watches, check battery degradation, account locks, charger condition, LTE activation, warranty and remaining software support. A low sticker price does not remove those risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Wear OS 3 and Wear OS 3.5?

Wear OS 3.5 is a later release in the Wear OS 3 generation. Pixel Watch launched with 3.5, while other watches may show 3.0 or 3.2; version-specific features are not guaranteed to match.

Which app pairs with a Wear OS 3 watch?

Use the manufacturer’s app: Galaxy Wearable for Samsung, Fossil Smartwatches for Fossil and Skagen models, Mobvoi Health for supported TicWatch models, and the app specified by Google or the watch maker for other devices.

Does a Wear OS 3 upgrade preserve my watch data?

No. An eligible major upgrade factory-resets the watch, erases local apps and settings, unpairs it and cannot be reversed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a discounted Wear OS 3 watch still a sensible purchase?

Yes, if the discount is substantial, the hardware meets your needs and you accept potentially shorter support than a comparable Wear OS 4 model. Verify exact compatibility and update policy first.

The Bottom Line

Wear OS 3 remains a capable Android smartwatch platform, but it is a platform generation rather than a uniform product. Buy a discounted model only after checking its exact version, companion app, phone compatibility, sensors and support outlook; when prices are close, a newer Wear OS 4 watch is usually the safer investment.
