Short answer: Wear OS 5 did not instantly disable every older watch face. A legacy face that is already installed may continue running, but Google Play no longer supports installing, updating, or newly monetizing legacy faces as of January 14, 2026. For supported Play distribution, new watch faces must use Google’s Watch Face Format (WFF).
What Google changed
The policy arrived in stages, so “Wear OS 5 drops support” is too broad. Google’s original Wear OS 5 guidance concerned watches that launched with Wear OS 5 preinstalled. On those devices, legacy executable faces were not the supported installation target, and some complications were unavailable to faces built with AndroidX or the Wearable Support Library. WFF faces were not subject to that restriction. See Google’s announcements from May 2024 and June 2025.
The broader Google Play deadline now matters more to most owners: from January 14, 2026, legacy faces could no longer be installed from Play on Wear OS devices, updated through Play, or newly monetized. Google’s current documentation says WFF is required for installing watch faces through the supported path as of January 2026 (WFF documentation).
Key dates
- January 27, 2025: new AndroidX or Wearable Support Library faces could no longer be published on Google Play. Existing legacy listings could still receive updates temporarily.
- January 14, 2026: Play installation and updates for legacy faces ended, as did new one-time purchases, in-app purchases, and subscriptions for those faces.
- After the deadline: already-installed legacy faces may continue to run. Existing purchases and subscriptions may continue, but subscriptions do not renew.
What counts as an old or legacy watch face?
“Old” describes the implementation, not simply the year it was released. Google’s legacy categories include faces built with AndroidX watch-face libraries, the Wearable Support Library, and other executable implementations that are not packaged as WFF.

A face first designed years ago may still be compatible if its developer republished it using WFF. Conversely, a recently updated face can remain legacy if its underlying implementation was not migrated.
What happens to a legacy face?

This is why an installed face can appear to “work” while the same face cannot be downloaded to a replacement watch. Runtime operation, installation, updates, restoration and commercial support are separate issues.
What is Watch Face Format (WFF)?
WFF is Google’s declarative, XML-based format. The face describes its layout, behavior and assets with XML and resources, while Wear OS supplies the rendering system. WFF faces are distributed as normal APK or AAB packages; the definitions and assets live in the application resources. Google documents the packaging model at developer.android.com/training/wearables/wff/build.

Google gives power efficiency, security, maintenance and forward compatibility as reasons for the format. Those are Google’s design goals, not a guarantee that every migrated face will use less battery or behave identically.

These are minimums, not interchangeable labels. For example, weather data was introduced in WFF 2, so a face using that capability cannot target only WFF 1. A WFF 4 face is not automatically usable on a Wear OS 4 or Wear OS 5 watch. Developers must select the minimum format version for the features they use and the devices they intend to support.

How to check a face before buying or upgrading
- Open Google Play on your phone, the web or the watch.
- Select or identify the exact target watch.
- Open the watch-face listing.
- Check whether the listing marks that watch as compatible and installable.
- If it is absent or unavailable, do not assume a previous purchase, backup or sideload will restore it.
Google says Play filters faces by device compatibility, and its consumer guidance warns that some older faces may not transfer during setup or restoration (Wear OS support).
If a favorite face disappears
- Search for a WFF-republished listing from the same developer.
- Check the developer’s official support page or in-app catalog for a separate compatible edition.
- Before resetting an old watch, photograph your complications, colors and other settings.
- Do not factory-reset the old watch until essential faces and purchases are confirmed on the replacement.
- Expect possible differences if the original depended on scripting, executable code or external data.
What about Facer, WatchMaker, TIMEFLIK and similar apps?
The app brand is not the compatibility test. An app may still install while some faces in its catalog remain legacy and unavailable. A service can migrate selected designs to WFF or use a newer delivery model on supported watches.
Later Wear OS versions support approaches such as Watch Face Push, in which a compatible app pushes a selected face into a designated watch-face slot rather than installing an unlimited collection of executable faces directly on the watch. This is relevant to supported newer, particularly Wear OS 6-era devices; it is not a universal workaround that restores legacy installation on every Wear OS 5 watch. Check the exact face listing and watch model before paying for a catalog or subscription.

What functionality can change during migration?
WFF is not guaranteed feature-for-feature parity with an executable face. Developers may need to redesign:
- Complications, including data sources restricted on legacy faces under Wear OS 5.
- Weather and health data access.
- Tap actions and interactions.
- Animations and always-on-display behavior.
- Custom scripting, user-created designs and external data.
- Companion-phone integration, presets and “flavors.”
Read the developer’s compatibility notes rather than assuming that a WFF relaunch is visually or functionally identical.

Developer migration requirements
Android Studio and direct WFF development
- Review Google’s WFF migration and feature documentation.
- Inventory unsupported APIs, complications, interactions, animations and data sources.
- Recreate the design with WFF XML and supported resources.
- Set the minimum WFF and Wear OS versions from the features used.
- Validate XML, memory use and behavior on relevant screen sizes and platform versions.
- Submit the migrated package through the appropriate Play tracks.
Changing only the target SDK does not convert an executable face into WFF.
Watch Face Studio
Google instructed Watch Face Studio developers to use version 1.8.7 or newer, rebuild or republish affected faces, resubmit them across production and every testing track, and remove bundles created with earlier versions. Samsung provides the tool at developer.samsung.com/watch-face-studio.

Check the face ecosystem before choosing hardware. Verify the watch’s shipping Wear OS version, the WFF version required by your face, whether your preferred catalog has migrated, and whether the device supports a newer slot-based delivery method. A newer watch is not automatically the best choice for someone whose priority is preserving a legacy library.
For third-party catalogs, compatibility is face- and device-specific. Facer’s official site is facer.io; WatchMaker’s is watchmaker.app. Their apps and catalogs can change independently of Google’s format policy, so confirm current support on the exact watch before purchasing.
Unsupported workarounds and common misconceptions
“My old face still runs, so it is fully supported.”
Not necessarily. It may have runtime continuity while losing installation, updates, restoration and new billing support.

“Every watch upgraded to Wear OS 5 blocks every old face.”
That collapses two phases. The original restriction focused on watches that shipped with Wear OS 5; the January 14, 2026 Play policy then blocked legacy installation and updates across Wear OS devices.

“I can just sideload the old APK.”
Sideloading is not a supported Google Play solution. Results vary by device and policy enforcement, and it does not restore official updates, transfer guarantees or billing. Google directs users to compatible Play listings (support guidance).
“Paying for a subscription restores the old catalog.”
Payment cannot override the format and device requirements. Legacy subscriptions may continue temporarily but do not renew after the policy deadline.

Will my old face still work after a Wear OS 5 update?
If it was already installed, it may continue running. A watch that shipped with Wear OS 5 had stricter legacy compatibility, and Play no longer supports new legacy installations or updates after January 14, 2026.
Can I reinstall a face I already bought?
Not reliably. A legacy face may be unavailable for a new installation or restoration even when the purchase remains associated with your account.

Does Wear OS 5 support Facer or WatchMaker?
The app may work, but individual faces depend on their format and delivery method. Check the exact listing for your watch; a legacy catalog is not guaranteed to install.
Can I sideload a legacy face?
Sideloading is unsupported and device-dependent. It does not provide official Play updates, restoration or billing support.
Do WFF faces use more battery?
Google designed WFF for efficiency, but the documentation is not a guarantee of identical battery results for every face.
Does WFF 2 work on Wear OS 4?
No. WFF 2 requires Wear OS 5; Wear OS 4 supports WFF 1.

They support WFF 4 and newer delivery approaches such as Watch Face Push where implemented, but each app and face still needs device-specific compatibility.
