Yes—clothing can be designed to make or control sound, but Wearables Sing in Smart Clothes describes experimental concepts, not a proven feature of ordinary garments or a currently available product. In a July 28, 2014 report, EE Times covered researcher Sabine Seymour’s ideas for using garment closures as musical controls, including a poncho whose closures made sounds and whose buttons served as speakers.
What does “sonic clothing” mean?
Sonic clothing uses a garment or its accessories as part of a sound-making or sound-controlling interaction. The wearer might trigger sounds by fastening a closure, or clothing might affect a larger sound environment. In the 2014 EE Times feature, Moondial founder Sabine Seymour presented these as design concepts and projects—not as a general capability of everyday clothes.
Seymour described the interaction in terms of closures: “When you zip up your pants, you close your pants and close the circuit. Whenever I close something, I create a circuit and am able to actuate or sense.” A conventional zipper does not automatically complete an electronic circuit; the idea is to design garment hardware and electronics so that a particular fastening action can function as an input.
How did the featured poncho use closures and buttons?
The feature’s central example was a poncho developed with a European fashion studio and the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. Its closures produced different sounds, while its buttons also doubled as speakers. By selecting closures, the wearer could shape a soundscape.

Seymour initially hoped the garments would connect to smartphones, but the report does not establish that this poncho had a production smartphone connection. It also gives no product specifications, quantified performance results, or evidence that the garment was sold commercially.
What was the BLESS No45 Soundperfume installation?
BLESS No45 Soundperfume was a separate interactive installation developed by Moondial and Bless with Popkalab. Visitors moved through a curtain, and items of clothing and accessories controlled the sound and volume of the surrounding sonic environment.

These projects illustrate different ways to connect clothing and sound; the report does not compare them through user testing or performance measurements.
Why use buttons, hooks, or zippers as electronic inputs?
Garment parts already invite people to touch, fasten, or move them. Seymour’s concept was to let those familiar actions also actuate or sense an electronic interaction, rather than adding an unrelated control to the clothing. Hooks, buttons, and loops were among the kinds of components she discussed.

That approach depends on deliberate design: the garment hardware must be integrated with electronics so an action can serve as a circuit-making, sensing, or actuation element. The feature presents this as an interaction idea, not a tested standard or a claim that every closure can do so.
What did Seymour mean by “invisible” technology?
Seymour described seamless integration as a design preference: “It’s important to me that technology is seamless, invisible. You’re only aware of it when you need it.” In context, “invisible” means unobtrusive in the garment until the wearer interacts with it; it is not a measured result about comfort, reliability, or usability.

What the 2014 report does—and does not—establish
Jessica Lipsky’s EE Times feature, published July 28, 2014, documents experimental fashion and wearable-interaction concepts associated with Seymour and her collaborators. It does not provide current availability, a retail model, pricing, washability or durability tests, safety guidance, or measured evidence about how people use music in clothing.
For readers interested in textile circuits, a conductive-thread starter kit may be a way to explore the general idea of connecting components through fabric. The report does not name or document use of conductive thread, and a kit should not be assumed to reproduce the poncho or either reported project.
