A quartz watch is an electronic timepiece that uses a vibrating quartz crystal as its time reference. A battery or other power source drives the crystal at a stable frequency—usually 32,768 hertz (Hz). An integrated circuit divides that frequency into one pulse per second; in an analog watch, a step motor turns that pulse into one-second hand movements, while a digital watch uses it to control the display.
What is a quartz watch and how does it work?
“Quartz” describes the watch’s oscillator, not its case material, display, or power source. The quartz crystal is the component that establishes the timing interval. Standard quartz watches use a tuning-fork-shaped crystal because quartz responds electrically through the piezoelectric effect: applying voltage makes the crystal flex and oscillate, and that oscillation produces a predictable electrical signal.
1. The power source starts the circuit
In an ordinary quartz watch, a small battery supplies electrical energy. Solar, kinetic, and thermal quartz watches generate energy and store it in a rechargeable secondary cell instead. The storage system changes how the watch is powered, but the quartz oscillator remains the time reference.
2. The crystal oscillates at 32,768 Hz
Modern quartz watches generally use a 32,768 Hz crystal. That frequency is convenient because 32,768 equals 215, allowing the circuit to halve the signal 15 times. Early Quartz Astron technology used an 8,192 Hz oscillator instead.

- ⌚ PURCHASE WITHOUT WORRY: Japan imported quartz analog movement and battery, long-term operation. for 1 years,24-hour customer service is at your service.
3. An integrated circuit divides the frequency
The integrated circuit counts the crystal’s rapid oscillations and repeatedly divides the frequency by two until it produces a one-second timing pulse. Turning a high-frequency signal into a slow, regular pulse makes the timing system practical for a wristwatch. The National Institute of Standards and Technology describes the same principle in its explanation of quartz clocks.
4. The pulse moves hands or refreshes a display
In an analog quartz watch, the circuit sends each one-second pulse to a driver and step motor. The motor advances a gear train by a fixed increment, normally moving the seconds hand one step at a time. The gears carry that motion to the minute and hour hands.

In a digital quartz watch, the divided signal controls the electronic display instead of a hand-driving gear train. Combination watches use both electronic display functions and an analog hand system.
How accurate is a quartz watch?
The Japan Clock & Watch Association gives ±20 seconds per month as the accuracy figure for a general quartz watch. That is a typical reference, not a guarantee for every model. A watch can gain up to about 20 seconds or lose up to about 20 seconds in a month under the conditions covered by that specification.

Why quartz watches are usually consistent
- The crystal oscillates at a much higher frequency than the one-second output used by the display.
- The electronic divider produces uniform timing pulses rather than relying on a continuously moving mechanical balance.
- Crystal oscillators are less affected by shock and the watch’s position than mechanical balance systems.
Temperature is the main accuracy variable
Quartz frequency changes with temperature. Exposure to conditions outside a watch’s intended operating range can therefore change its rate. Analog and combination quartz watches can also be affected by magnetism, according to the Japan Clock & Watch Association.
High-accuracy quartz designs
Temperature-compensated circuits can correct much of the crystal’s temperature-related change. Seiko reports the following historical specifications for products introduced in 1978:

| Design | Reported accuracy | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Twin Quartz | ±10 seconds per year | Seiko-reported 1978 specification |
| Superior Twin Quartz | ±5 seconds per year | Seiko-reported 1978 specification |
These figures show what temperature-compensated quartz can achieve; they should not be applied to a standard quartz watch without checking that watch’s own specification.
How accuracy is tested
ISO 19235:2015 specifies timing-accuracy requirements and test methods for analog quartz clocks using a 32,768 Hz oscillator and a nominal 1.5-volt supply. ISO says this edition was reviewed and confirmed current in 2026. A laboratory or standards result is not automatically the same as the rate you will see on your wrist, where temperature, magnetism, battery condition, and wear conditions vary.

How long does a quartz battery last?
A standard battery-powered quartz watch usually runs for several years before its battery is exhausted. The exact interval depends on the movement, hands, complications, alarm or backlight use, battery type, and operating conditions; the supplied specifications do not establish one universal number.
What happens when the battery expires?
- The watch stops or begins losing time as the battery voltage falls.
- Have the battery replaced with a compatible cell for that specific movement and case.
- Ask for the case-back gasket and water-resistance seals to be checked if the watch is intended for water exposure.
- After replacement, confirm that the hands, display, date mechanism, and any complications operate normally.
Solar, kinetic, and thermal quartz watches use a rechargeable secondary cell rather than a conventional disposable battery. They still require eventual service when that storage cell reaches the end of its useful life.
Quartz vs mechanical watch—what is the difference?
The defining difference is the time reference. A quartz watch regulates time electronically with a quartz-crystal oscillator and normally advances its hands in discrete steps. A mechanical watch regulates time with a mechanical oscillator and gear train. Quartz models generally prioritize consistent rate, low maintenance between battery or energy-cell services, and accessible pricing; mechanical models are chosen more often for their fully mechanical construction, craft, and continuously powered movement. Individual watches vary, so compare the manufacturer’s accuracy, service interval, magnetism resistance, water resistance, and power system rather than assuming every watch in one category performs identically.
Quartz watch power systems compared
| Power system | How it is supplied | Maintenance implication |
|---|---|---|
| Standard battery quartz | Disposable battery | Battery replacement after several years; use a compatible cell. |
| Solar quartz | Light converted and stored in a secondary cell | No routine disposable-battery changes, but the rechargeable cell eventually needs service. |
| Kinetic quartz | Motion-generated electrical energy stored in a secondary cell | Rechargeable-cell service is eventually required. |
| Thermal quartz | Energy generated from temperature differences and stored | Rechargeable-cell service is eventually required. |
What to check before buying a quartz watch
- Accuracy specification: Look for the manufacturer’s stated monthly or yearly tolerance. Do not substitute the general ±20-seconds-per-month figure for a model-specific rating.
- Power source: Decide whether you prefer a conventional battery, solar charging, kinetic generation, or another rechargeable system.
- Service access: Check the recommended battery or rechargeable-cell procedure and whether water-resistance testing is available after opening the case.
- Environment: If the watch will face large temperature swings, ask whether it has temperature compensation. For analog or combination models, consider magnetism exposure.
- Display: Choose analog hands, a digital display, or a combination based on readability and functions.
A short history of quartz wristwatches
Seiko identifies the Quartz Astron, introduced in 1969, as the world’s first commercially marketed quartz wristwatch. Seiko reported a monthly error within ±5 seconds for that model, a major improvement over the performance expected from many earlier wristwatch technologies.
Bottom line
Quartz watches keep time by electrically exciting a quartz crystal, dividing its 32,768 Hz vibration into one-second pulses, and using those pulses to move hands or operate a digital display. A general quartz watch is commonly specified at about ±20 seconds per month, while temperature-compensated designs can be substantially better. Battery models normally run for several years before needing a compatible replacement; solar, kinetic, and thermal versions store generated energy but still have rechargeable cells that may eventually require service.
