Robert-Jan Broer bought a pre-owned Rolex Yacht-Master 16622 in 2007, sold it two years later to help fund an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, then bought another 16622 in 2020. He says he missed the watch’s pale platinum look and its unusual combination of steel and platinum. The “again” is personal: this is why one owner returned to a watch he had let go, not a claim that the 16622 is the right choice for everyone.
Why did Broer buy the 16622 again?
Broer’s first 16622 was a pre-owned watch he bought in 2007. In 2009, he sold it to make room financially for an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Later, he realized he missed the Yacht-Master’s light, cool-toned appearance and its mix of materials. In 2020, he bought a 2004 example.
That sequence makes the story less about replacing one watch with a technically superior model and more about recognizing a preference that had endured. The 16622’s pale platinum dial and bezel gave Broer a look he did not find himself ready to leave behind.
What makes the 16622 distinctive?
Rolesium: steel with platinum
The 40 mm 16622 is a Rolesium Yacht-Master, combining stainless steel with platinum. In Broer’s account, the platinum bezel and dial are central to the reference’s appeal: they create a lighter, more restrained appearance than the familiar all-steel sports-watch look. A Phillips catalogue entry for one circa-2005 example also identifies it as a 40 mm stainless-steel-and-platinum watch with an automatic calibre 3135 and Oyster bracelet; that single lot does not establish the originality or condition of other examples. Dial texture varies by production era
Broer prefers the coarser grain he associates with earlier dials, before a change he places around 2007. He describes later dials as smoother and says Rolex engraving on the rehaut appeared around 2007/2008. These are his observations about production-era details, not a reliable way to identify every watch by year alone. Inspect the actual dial and rehaut, and confirm the watch’s configuration and history rather than assuming they from a date or listing description. Broer’s account of the 16622.
How does it differ from the later Yacht-Master?
Broer’s main distinction between the 16622 and the later 116622 is the latter’s more solid clasp. That is a limited comparison, not a comprehensive account of every change between references. If clasp construction matters to you, compare the specific watches in person and verify their references.

The 16622 also should not be treated as a Submariner substitute. Broer describes its bezel as bidirectional and the Yacht-Master as not a dive watch. Rolex’s current brochure describes the current 126622’s bidirectional 60-minute bezel as useful for measuring intervals such as sailing time between buoys, but that description applies to the 126622, not a full specification sheet for the 16622. What should you check before buying a pre-owned 16622?
Broer says bracelet stretch was one of his concerns when shopping for an older example. He reports that the 2004 watch he bought had no stretch or damage and came with its box and papers. Those are his observations of his own purchase, not an independent inspection or a guarantee about other watches.

- Reference and details: Confirm that the watch is a 16622 and check its particular dial, rehaut, bezel, and bracelet rather than inferring them from the stated year.
- Condition: Look closely at bracelet stretch, clasp wear, case shape, bezel condition, dial, and hands. Request clear photographs and an in-person inspection where possible.
- Documentation and provenance: Ask for available service records, ownership history, box and papers, and an explanation of any missing or replaced parts.
- Seller terms: Check how the seller authenticates the watch, what warranty or guarantee applies, and whether returns are permitted and on what terms.
- Price: Compare current asking prices for examples with similar condition, completeness, and seller protections in the same market. A single asking price or auction result cannot establish fair value.

What does buying it again say about the 16622?
For Broer, the lasting draw was specific: the steel-and-platinum construction, the light-colored dial and bezel, and the pleasure of wearing a watch whose look he had missed. His return to a 2004 example does not prove that the reference is a better investment, more comfortable, or more desirable than another Rolex; those judgments depend on the individual watch and its owner.
