10 affordable watches to consider
The picks below are organized by the kind of watch you want, not ranked from best to worst. Check the exact reference and current local price before buying: several families have multiple versions, and specifications can change between them.
1. Seiko 5 Sports SRPD55 — everyday automatic
The SRPD55 is a versatile entry point if you want an automatic watch with a familiar sports-watch look. Montre24’s September 2026 guide reports a Seiko 4R36 automatic movement, about 41 hours of power reserve, 100 m water resistance, a 42.5 mm case, and Hardlex crystal. Underdial’s under-$200 guide describes the SRPD line as hand-winding and hacking, meaning you can wind the movement by hand and stop the seconds hand to set the time precisely.
The trade-offs are its mineral-based Hardlex crystal rather than sapphire and a case size that may feel large on smaller wrists. Its 100 m rating is useful for everyday water exposure, but does not by itself establish that this specific reference is a certified dive watch.
#1 Best Overall
- Stainless steel case 40mm diameter x 14.1mm thick; Exhibition case back; Black dial; Luminous hands.Band Length: 205mm
- NH35A Japanese Automatic movement, 24 jewel; Assembled in Malaysia; Watch weight 155 grams
- Includes gift box, instructions and 3 year limited manufacturer warranty; Invicta Customer Service can be reached at 1-800-327-7682 for questions (re: Additional links, band replacement, band adjustment, warranty questions, etc.)
2. Orient Bambino Version 7 — dress watch
For a more formal option, Montre24’s Version 7 listing reports an F6724 automatic movement, a 38.4 mm case, domed mineral crystal, and 30 m water resistance. Its curved crystal and dress-watch proportions give it a distinct role from the sportier picks here.
Version matters: Underdial’s Gen 5 entry gives a $130–$175 street-price range and the same 30 m rating, but those price and generation details should not be applied to Version 7. A 30 m rating is not a swimming or diving specification; keep this watch away from water beyond incidental splashes.
3. Orient Kamasu — dive-watch styling with stronger listed specs
The Kamasu is the shortlist’s more water-oriented mechanical choice. Montre24 identifies it as a dive-watch pick and reports sapphire crystal and 200 m water resistance; Underdial identifies the movement as Orient’s F6922 automatic. Those listed specifications distinguish it from watches with mineral crystal and lower water-resistance ratings.
Confirm the exact Kamasu reference, current local price, and manufacturer guidance before treating any particular version as suitable for diving. The available guide information does not establish the certification of every reference.

4. Citizen Eco-Drive BM8180-03E — solar-powered everyday watch
If you prefer to avoid routine battery changes and automatic-watch winding, consider the BM8180-03E. Sadiwear lists this reference as solar quartz with 100 m water resistance. Underdial describes the related BM7 series as solar quartz, with mineral crystal and 100 m water resistance.
BM8180-03E and BM7-series specifications are not interchangeable: confirm the precise reference and its size, crystal, and features with the seller or manufacturer. Solar quartz still needs light exposure to maintain charge, so it is not a maintenance-free choice if it spends long periods stored in darkness.
5. Seiko 5 Sports GMT SSK001 — mechanical GMT
The SSK001 adds a second-time-zone display to Seiko’s sports-watch format. Montre24 reports a 4R34 mechanical GMT movement, about 41 hours of power reserve, 100 m water resistance, a 42.5 mm case, and Hardlex crystal. Its GMT hand is independently adjusted, while the local hour hand is not; that makes it an office-style GMT rather than the travel-oriented arrangement where the local hour hand jumps independently.
As with the SRPD55, the case may wear large, and Hardlex is not sapphire. Choose it for the GMT function and design, not as a substitute for a watch with a different time-zone setting system.

6. Tissot PRX 40 mm quartz — integrated-bracelet style
The quartz PRX is a way into the integrated-bracelet look without stepping up to the automatic version’s higher price. Stuff lists the quartz model at 40 mm diameter and 100 m water resistance. Its guide also notes that the automatic costs more, so compare like with like when checking prices.
The cited information does not establish a current price or crystal specification for this version. Verify the exact quartz reference and its price in your market rather than using an automatic PRX listing as a comparison.
7. Seiko Prospex Compact Solar Scuba Diver — compact solar sports watch
For a smaller case and a more water-focused specification set, Stuff lists the Seiko Prospex Compact Solar Scuba Diver with a solar V147 movement, a stated 10-month power reserve, 200 m water resistance, a 38.5 mm diameter, sapphire crystal, rotating bezel, and screw-down crown. It is the clearest option here for someone who wants a compact solar watch with substantial water-resistance specifications.
The 10-month reserve is the figure reported by Stuff; actual charging depends on light exposure and use. Confirm the exact model reference and manufacturer’s water-use instructions before taking it into water.

8. Casio G-Shock GA-2100-1A — tough, low-fuss option
The GA-2100-1A is the straightforward pick if toughness and everyday practicality matter more than a mechanical movement. Sadiwear’s guide, updated April 2026, lists quartz movement, 200 m water resistance, and an approximate price of $100. That price is a guide figure, not a current quote.
Its quartz movement does not need winding, but this is a different proposition from a traditional mechanical watch: choose it for the robust, practical format rather than movement craftsmanship.
9. Casio Duro MDV106 — inexpensive dive-style quartz
The Duro is a simple quartz watch for readers who want dive-watch styling on a tight budget. GQ’s May 20, 2026 guide called it its cheap dive watch and displayed an Amazon price of $69 at publication. That is a dated listing price, not a current price or endorsement of a particular seller.
The available source information does not establish the exact reference’s full specifications or certification. Check those details and the seller’s listing before relying on it for water use.

10. Timex Expedition Scout 40mm — field-watch option
For a field-watch look, GQ’s May 20, 2026 guide selected the Expedition Scout 40mm and displayed an Amazon price of $51 at publication. Treat that amount as historical, not as a current offer. The guide’s selection makes it a budget-minded alternative to the automatic and solar watches above, but the available details here do not establish its movement, crystal, or water-resistance specification.
Check the exact variant before buying, especially if you need a particular movement or plan to expose the watch to water.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among them
- Choose the movement that suits your routine. Automatic watches such as the Seiko 5 Sports and Orient Bambino need to be worn or otherwise kept running, while the listed Citizen and Seiko solar models charge from light. Quartz models such as the G-Shock and Duro prioritize straightforward timekeeping.
- Check fit, not just the diameter. The listed cases range from 38.4 mm on the Bambino Version 7 to 42.5 mm on the two Seiko 5 Sports models. Case shape and bracelet or strap also affect how a watch wears, so try it on when possible.
- Match water resistance to actual use. A 30 m or 50 m rating is not a diving rating. Higher ratings such as 200 m are useful specifications, but do not assume that a watch is certified for diving unless that is verified for its exact reference.
- Compare the exact version and price. A model family may include different movements, materials, and sizes. Guide prices can be dated, regional, or tied to a particular variant; compare current local listings against the precise reference you intend to buy.
- Consider ownership beyond the spec sheet. Crystal material, bracelet fit, strap-change options, battery or charging needs, warranty, and access to service can matter more in daily use than a headline specification.
What “a nod from snobs” can—and cannot—mean
These watches appear in editorial buying guides, which is evidence that they have been recommended by watch publications, not proof that enthusiasts as a group approve of them. Stuff’s September 14, 2026 guide argues that a $500/£500 budget opens access to a broad range of watches, including automatics and models with 200 m water resistance and GMT complications; that is the guide’s characterization, not a market-wide measurement. A recognizable movement or well-considered design may make a watch interesting to enthusiasts, but fit, use, and personal taste remain decisive.
