A standard watch strap is held on by two small spring bars, one at each lug. A NATO-style strap is a single piece that runs through both spring bars, so if one bar fails the strap stays attached to the watch, although the watch may hang at an awkward angle. Choosing between a spring-bar strap, a NATO or Zulu, a rubber or leather strap, or a metal bracelet depends on the hardware as much as on the look of the strap. This guide follows the structure of Thomas Stover’s practical overview for Fratello Watches, published October 7, 2021 (Spring-Bars And NATOs: A What’s What Of Watch Straps, Buckles, And Bars), and explains what each part does and what to check before you buy.
How a strap actually attaches to the watch
Most straps and bracelets with lugs attach through spring bars: short, slightly curved pins with a small spring-loaded tip at one end. The bar sits inside a hole in the strap’s end piece, and the spring-loaded tip is pressed in to slide the bar into the lug holes on the watch. When released, the tip snaps back out and holds the strap in place.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBecause the bar is the only thing holding the strap, its condition, length and thickness matter as much as the strap itself. Stover’s article treats the hardware as part of the strap choice rather than an afterthought.
Checking spring-bar fit and condition
- Confirm the bar length matches the gap between the lugs of your watch. A bar that is too short may not engage the lug hole fully.
- Check that the spring-loaded tip still springs out cleanly. A tip that sticks or fails to return is a sign the bar should be replaced.
- Look for bent or worn bars. Stover recounts bars failing in use, which is why he treats bar condition as a regular check rather than a one-time setup step.
- Consider bar thickness when the strap will see rough use. The article says heavier activity can call for stronger bars. The sizes Stover uses are his own examples, so verify dimensions against your watch’s lug spacing rather than copying them.
Quick-release bars
Quick-release spring bars let you change straps without a tool, which is convenient for everyday swaps. Stover cautions that they are not intended for the rough-use scenario he describes, so they are better suited to casual wear and changing straps at home than to heavy activity.

- Classic sport bands are made of high quality woven nylon materials, soft, breathable, lightweight and waterproof and fully washable for swimming, sports and other outdoor activities
- One-piece straps are extra-long by design, total length: 290mm(11.4inches), with 13 holes that fit wrists from 6.1” to 9” in circumference, if the band is longer than desired, the free end can be folded neatly back into the loop
- Straps are available in 18mm, 20mm, 22mm widths. To determine the proper width for your watch, use a metric ruler to measure the ‘lug width’ (the point on the watch head where the band attaches)
- Swap in seconds, install in just two easy steps. First the strap runs through two ports of the watch. Then, pass through the clasp. Finally adjust the length that suits you
- Package came with 1 nylon strap, 4 spring bars and 1 remove tool, it is convenient for you to change the strap
The spring-bar tool
A spring-bar tool compresses the spring tip so a standard bar can be removed or inserted. Stover notes that he owns one, and it is useful even if you use quick-release bars, because not every bar on a watch is quick-release and some straps arrive with standard bars. Keep a tool in your kit for swaps and for replacing a bar that has failed.
NATO and Zulu: the pass-through design
A NATO strap is a single piece of webbing or fabric that is folded so that it runs under the watch, passes through both spring bars, and then doubles back. Each spring bar sits between the strap and the watch case, and the excess length on the strap is held by one or more keepers, or rings. Zulu-style straps follow the same general construction, typically in a thicker or more structured form.

The key practical point is failure behaviour. Because the strap runs through both bars, if one bar fails the strap still holds the watch. Stover’s article makes this its central argument for the design, while noting that the watch may hang awkwardly in that situation. A NATO is therefore a backup, not a guarantee that the watch will sit correctly after a bar fails.
Material variants
- Basic nylon: the most common and least expensive form of NATO construction. It is the simplest entry point for trying a pass-through strap.
- Premium seatbelt-style material: a heavier, more structured webbing that Stover describes as a step up from basic nylon in feel and durability.
- Hardware variations: the article notes that buckle, keeper and ring hardware can differ between makers, so check the finish and fit when comparing otherwise similar straps.
Comparing the main strap types
Stover contrasts leather, rubber, mesh and fabric on comfort, water suitability, breathability, construction and intended use. The table below summarises the strap types the article covers, with the trade-offs it raises. It is a qualitative comparison, not a standardised test, so use it to narrow your choices rather than to rank products.

Leather: what the labels mean
Stover discusses Italian leather and leather from Horween, a tannery, including Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan. He points out that Horween is a tannery and does not make watch straps, so a strap labelled with Horween leather is made by another company using leather Horween supplied. Treat his descriptions as the author’s account of these materials, not as independent evaluations of leather quality.
Rubber: Tropic-style, ISOfrane and curved-end designs
The article describes three rubber approaches. Tropic-style straps are vulcanized rubber. ISOfrane straps are synthetic rubber. Everest straps have curved ends designed for particular Rolex models. Curved ends fit a specific case shape, so a rubber strap that looks right may not seat correctly on a different watch. Confirm the exact model and lug dimensions before buying.

Milanese mesh and bracelets
Milanese mesh is an interlinked metal bracelet. Stover emphasises that source and quality vary, so check the link construction, clasp and finish rather than relying on the name alone. Aftermarket fitted end-link bracelets and stretch bracelets are also covered, with Forstner named as an example. Fitted bracelets are sized to the watch’s end-link fit, so measure your lug width before ordering.

- Tang buckles: the standard pin-and-hole closure on leather and rubber straps. Adjustment holes set the fit.
- Folding clasps: a metal clasp common on bracelets and some premium straps. These are less adjustable than a tang buckle, so check that the clasp length suits your wrist.
- Mesh clasps: the closure on Milanese mesh bracelets, which often include micro-adjustment. Check whether the clasp is part of the bracelet or sold separately.
Choosing a strap: a checklist
- Confirm the strap’s end-piece width matches your watch’s lug width.
- Choose the material for the environment: water exposure, rough activity or formal wear.
- For a NATO, check the keeper and ring hardware, and the overall length against your wrist.
- Check the spring-bar type and length before fitting a new strap, and replace bars that stick or are bent.
- Keep a spring-bar tool on hand for swaps and repairs.
What this article does and does not establish
Stover’s article is a 2021 personal overview. It contains his opinions, his experience with specific bars and straps, and examples he chose, not controlled tests or universal specifications. It does not verify current product catalogues, prices, availability or sizing standards for each maker it names, including Tropic, ISOfrane, Everest, Blu Shark Straps and Forstner. Check each maker’s current product listings and your watch’s lug measurements before buying, since products and ranges change over time.

In practice this means the principles hold: pass-through NATO construction gives a backup if one bar fails, bar fit and condition matter as much as the strap, and rubber, leather, mesh and fabric each suit different use. The exact specifications do not.
