If Apple Watch cellular data is not working, first check whether the watch is actually disconnected from cellular: green bars mean it is connected, while a white Cellular button can simply mean it is using the iPhone or Wi-Fi instead. Then confirm that the watch supports cellular and has an eligible, active carrier plan; retry Apple’s setup steps, and contact the carrier if activation or eligibility remains a problem.
Apple Watch automatically uses the most power-efficient available connection: a nearby iPhone, a compatible Wi-Fi network, then cellular when the other connections are unavailable and a plan is set up. Cellular availability depends on the carrier and area, and extended cellular use consumes more battery.
14 tips to fix Apple Watch cellular data
1. Check the cellular indicator
Press the watch’s side button to open Control Center and inspect the cellular indicator. Apple says a no-cellular icon means the watch has lost its connection to a cellular network; green cellular bars indicate a cellular connection and show signal strength.
2. Don’t mistake a white Cellular button for failure
A white Cellular button can be normal: the plan may be active while the watch is connected to its paired iPhone or Wi-Fi. The watch uses cellular when those alternatives are unavailable. Check its status again after disconnecting from them.

3. Test cellular when the iPhone and Wi-Fi are unavailable
Move away from the paired iPhone and a compatible Wi-Fi network before testing cellular. If the watch remains connected through either option, that does not prove its cellular service is working or failing.
4. Confirm that the watch supports cellular
GPS-only Apple Watch models cannot connect directly to a mobile network. Check your model and the Cellular section in the Watch app. A GPS + Cellular watch still needs an eligible carrier plan. If you are replacing a GPS-only model, an Apple Watch GPS + Cellular is relevant only if you need cellular-capable hardware; buying one does not activate service.
5. Check that the carrier supports Apple Watch cellular in your area
Cellular service is not available with every carrier or in every area. Check your carrier’s Apple Watch support and local coverage before treating a lack of connection as a watch fault.
6. Confirm the plan is eligible and active for Apple Watch
The watch needs an eligible plan set up for Apple Watch, not just a working iPhone plan. In the Watch app, check My Watch > Cellular for the plan and its status. If the plan is missing or activation is incomplete, contact the carrier about setup and account eligibility.

7. Check the same-carrier setup requirement
For standard setup, Apple requires the iPhone and Apple Watch to use the same carrier, and setup must be done within that carrier’s network. Ask the carrier to confirm these requirements if you cannot activate the plan.
8. Ask about account restrictions
Some corporate, prepaid, or older accounts may not qualify for Apple Watch cellular. Ask the carrier whether your specific account and plan are eligible rather than assuming the watch is defective.
9. Check software and carrier settings
Make sure the iPhone and watch software are current, and check for a carrier-settings update on the iPhone. To check iPhone software, go to Settings > General > Software Update; to check watch software, open Watch > My Watch > General > Software Update. For carrier settings, open Settings > General > About and follow any update prompt.
10. Cycle Airplane Mode on both devices
Apple’s setup troubleshooting sequence is to turn Airplane Mode on for both the iPhone and Apple Watch, wait 15 seconds, then turn it off on both and retry setup. Confirm the setting is off on each device afterward.

12. Restart both devices
Restart the iPhone and Apple Watch, then retry setup or test cellular again with the iPhone and Wi-Fi unavailable. Apple lists restarting both devices as another step when setup does not complete.
13. Consider battery and app behavior
Extended cellular use consumes more battery than relying on the iPhone or Wi-Fi. Also, some apps may not update without a connection to the iPhone, so an app that is not refreshing does not by itself establish that the cellular connection has failed.
14. Contact the carrier if the problem remains
If the plan is missing, activation still fails, or cellular does not work after these checks, contact the carrier to confirm plan activation, account eligibility, and local service. Apple’s setup guidance recommends contacting the carrier when setup remains unsuccessful.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Apple Watch Cellular button white instead of green?
A white button can mean the plan is active but the watch is using the paired iPhone or Wi-Fi. Cellular is used when those connections are unavailable and a plan is set up.
Can a GPS-only Apple Watch use cellular data?
No. The watch must support cellular and have an eligible plan from a supported carrier.
What should I do if Apple Watch cellular setup keeps failing?
Try Apple’s documented sequence: cycle Airplane Mode on both devices and wait 15 seconds before turning it off, close and reopen the Watch app, then restart both devices. If setup still fails, contact the carrier about plan activation and eligibility.
Why does an app fail to update when my watch is on cellular?
Some apps may not update without a connection to the iPhone. Compare the cellular indicator and other data-dependent functions before concluding that cellular service itself has failed.
