The claim that it “nearly killed” the franchise is a dramatic interpretation, not a conclusion established by Capcom’s published figures. What the record does show is a large-scale, action-oriented design followed by Capcom’s stated decision to refocus Resident Evil 7 on horror and the series’ roots.
When did Resident Evil 6 come out?
Capcom announced an October 2, 2012 release in North America and Europe for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Resident Evil 6. Japan’s release date was October 4. Capcom said the PC release date had not yet been decided when it made the announcement on April 11, 2012. Capcom’s release announcement is the basis for those regional dates and original platforms.
Did Resident Evil 6 nearly kill the series?
There is evidence of a pronounced creative change afterward, but the available Capcom statements and sales listings do not establish that the series was close to cancellation or that Resident Evil 6 alone caused the later change.
Commercially, the game was substantial. Capcom reported more than 4.5 million worldwide initial shipments for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions in an October 4, 2012 announcement. That figure means shipments, not confirmed sales to players. In the same announcement, Capcom said the franchise had recorded more than 50 million cumulative sales as of June 30, 2012. Capcom’s announcement provides both figures.

Capcom’s current Platinum Titles list, accessed October 3, 2026, gives the October 2012 PS3/Xbox 360 release entry 11.10 million units. It lists a separate March 2016 PS4/Xbox One entry at 4.80 million units. Because Capcom reports these as separate release entries, neither figure should be treated as an explicitly stated all-platform lifetime total, and they should not simply be added together. Capcom’s Platinum Titles list may change as it is updated.
Why did Capcom make Resident Evil 6 so broad?
In a 2013 retrospective, Capcom said the sixth game was developed in response to user feedback, with an ambition for Hollywood-style production and global reach. It described using seven main characters and four scenario types to appeal to varied players. Those statements explain the publisher’s design intent; they do not demonstrate how players received the result. Capcom’s 2013 retrospective outlines that approach.

The contrast with what Capcom said next is clearer than any claim about a near-death experience. In its 2017 announcement for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Capcom described the game as focusing on “fear, exploration and tense atmosphere” and as refocusing the franchise on horror. Capcom’s announcement also named PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC among the launch platforms.

Capcom described Resident Evil 7 as a return in creative emphasis, not as a formal reboot. In Capcom’s 2022 Online Integrated Report, Head of Technical Research Kazunori Kadoi wrote: “While developing Resident Evil 7 biohazard (Resident Evil 7, below), our theme was returning to our roots, and as developers, we took another look at the true essence of Resident Evil.” The report documents the company’s stated development theme.

That is evidence for a deliberate change in design priorities, not proof that Resident Evil 6 was the sole cause, that Capcom planned to abandon the series, or that Resident Evil 7 erased continuity. For broader context, Capcom reported 127 million cumulative series sales as of June 30, 2022; that is a dated figure, not a current 2026 total.
