24 Months With a Rolex Datejust: What a Real Long-Term Review Should Establish

Rolex's specifications explain what the Datejust is designed to offer, but they cannot replace two years of evidence from an identified watch and owner.

A credible 24-month Rolex Datejust review depends on the exact watch and its owner’s documented experience. The title alone does not identify a size, reference, dial, bezel, metal or bracelet—and manufacturer specifications cannot establish how one individual watch wore, kept time or held up. Without those details and observations, a first-person verdict would be misleading.

What the Datejust is—and what the name does not tell you

Rolex dates the Datejust’s launch to 1945. The company says the original brought together a chronometer-certified movement, self-winding mechanism and waterproof case. Its date appears in a window at 3 o’clock; Rolex says it added the Cyclops lens in 1953 and made the date change instantaneous in 1956. These are Rolex’s own historical claims, described on its Datejust features page.

Datejust is a family, not one fixed configuration. Rolex’s current range includes 31 mm, 36 mm and 41 mm cases, with variations in materials, dials, bezels and bracelets. The 36 and 41 are offered with Oyster or Jubilee bracelets; bracelet availability varies by configuration for the 31. A long-term review should identify the actual watch before drawing conclusions about its appearance, fit or wear.

What a two-year ownership account needs to report

To assess a watch after 24 months, the reviewer needs observations from the owner or direct inspection—not just a catalogue page. At minimum, identify the reference and configuration, and explain the basis for each claim about daily use.

  • Wear history: how often it was worn and whether it was rotated with other watches.
  • Condition: specific observations of the case and bracelet, without implying that every Datejust develops the same marks.
  • Fit and use: the owner’s account of fit during a normal day, bracelet adjustment, crown operation and date-setting convenience.
  • Timekeeping: if a deviation is reported, give the measured result, period and method. Do not substitute Rolex’s stated accuracy criterion for a measurement of this watch.
  • Water exposure and upkeep: describe what the watch actually encountered and provide any service or repair history.

No owner-specific wear log, measurement, inspection or service record is established here. That means there is no sound basis for claiming that a particular sample stayed scratch-free, felt comfortable, kept a certain rate, remained water-resistant or retained a particular resale value after two years.

Datejust 31, 36 and 41: the specifications that differ

Rolex lists calibre 2236 for the Datejust 31 and calibre 3235 for the 36 and 41. Both are self-winding mechanical movements. The power-reserve figures below are approximate manufacturer specifications, not results from a test of a two-year-old review sample.

Current Datejust size Movement Rolex-stated approximate power reserve
31 mm Calibre 2236 Approximately 55 hours
36 mm Calibre 3235 Approximately 70 hours
41 mm Calibre 3235 Approximately 70 hours

Power reserve describes how long a fully wound movement may run off the wrist; it does not establish the reserve achieved by an individual watch. Case diameter also does not, by itself, determine fit. A useful size comparison needs the actual wearer’s wrist and the specific watch configuration.

Accuracy: distinguish the standard from a measured result

Rolex states that its finished-watch Superlative Chronometer criterion is −2/+2 seconds per day under the company’s post-casing test protocol. Separately, Rolex gives −4/+6 seconds per day as the chronometer certification tolerance for the movement. These are different standards: neither figure is a measurement of an owner’s watch over 24 months, nor a guarantee of its rate in every condition.

In 2026, Rolex said the Superlative Chronometer criteria were expanded to include resistance to magnetism, reliability and sustainability, alongside precision, waterproofness, self-winding and autonomy. This is a dated manufacturer statement, not an independent assessment of an individual Datejust.

Water resistance and sensible care

Rolex states that the Datejust’s Oyster case is guaranteed waterproof to 100 metres (330 feet). The company also says the case must remain properly sealed to maintain waterproofness. A model’s stated depth rating therefore cannot establish the present condition of a particular watch, especially without an inspection or record confirming its sealing.

For routine care, Rolex advises making sure the winding crown is screwed down properly against the case before cleaning. For a metal-bracelet watch exposed to salt water or beach conditions, it recommends rinsing with fresh water to remove salt and sand. See Rolex’s US watch-care guidance. Is a Rolex Datejust worth it?

There is no evidence here to settle value for money, current cost or availability, individual-owner satisfaction, failure rates or resale performance. Those conclusions depend on the exact reference, market and purchase circumstances, as well as evidence beyond the manufacturer’s specifications. A buyer can use the size, movement, bracelet and configuration differences to narrow the choice, but should not treat a generic two-year review as proof of how a specific watch will fit, perform or hold value.
