1. G-SHOCK G-SQUAD DW-H5600: the best-supported fitness pick
The DW-H5600 is the clearest choice here if you want a current-style connected watch for training rather than a wrist-worn app platform. Casio documents optical heart-rate measurement, activity tracking, training analysis, sleep data and phone notifications. Solar-powered variants are also listed. Its square G-SHOCK design makes it a natural fit for someone who prefers a rugged, familiar silhouette to a conventional round sports watch. Keep the category distinction in mind: phone linkage and notifications do not mean it provides the general-purpose app ecosystem of a Wear OS watch.
2. G-SHOCK G-SQUAD GM-H5600: a more substantial metal look
The GM-H5600 keeps the DW-H5600 functions while changing the materials and presentation. Casio specifies a stainless-steel bezel, carbon-fiber-reinforced case back, high-definition MIP display, and charging by USB and solar power. Choose between the DW and GM by case styling and charging details, not by assuming the GM adds a broader smartwatch operating system; Casio describes it as retaining the DW-H5600 functions.
3. G-SQUAD PRO GSW-H1000: a discontinued Wear OS option
The GSW-H1000 is the list’s legacy app-platform watch. Casio identifies it as the first G-SQUAD model using Wear OS, but its official product page marks it discontinued. Treat it as a used or remaining-stock device, not a straightforward current recommendation. Casio’s GSW-H1000 product page provides the product status and specifications.

Setup and app access need particular care. Casio says Wear OS app distribution through Google Play ended on November 1, 2025, and provides an alternate download page for Android users. The support page also notes that some instructions still refer to Google Play, so do not assume setup will be seamless or that every app remains available. Check Casio’s GSW-H1000 app download and support page before considering one.
4. PRO TREK Smart WSD-F30: an older outdoor smartwatch
The WSD-F30 is a legacy outdoor-oriented Wear OS option for people interested in the PRO TREK line. Casio’s motion-sensor compatibility FAQ names the WSD-F30, WSD-F21HR and WSD-F20 as Wear OS watches compatible with that sensor. This is a specific compatibility statement, not proof that the watch has current app distribution, ongoing full functionality or active retail availability. 5. G-SHOCK G-SQUAD GBD-H2000: a sensor-focused candidate
Casio’s G-SQUAD overview highlights GPS and six-sensor capability for the GBD-H2000 family, making it an interesting candidate if training and outdoor data matter more than app-platform features. The overview does not establish every model-specific capability or current availability, so confirm those on the product information for the exact version and in your market. Casio’s G-SQUAD lineup is the starting point.
How to choose the right kind of Japanese smartwatch
- For connected training: Start with the DW-H5600 or compare the GM-H5600 if its metal styling appeals to you. These are fitness-oriented watches, not general-purpose app watches.
- For a Wear OS app experience: The GSW-H1000 and WSD-F30 are legacy choices. Verify app access, phone compatibility and support before committing, especially for secondhand devices.
- For GPS and sensor-led activity features: Investigate the GBD-H2000, but confirm the exact model’s functions and regional status rather than inferring them from a lineup overview.
- For GPS timekeeping rather than apps: Seiko Astron belongs in a different category. Seiko describes Astron families with GPS Solar and solar-radio-controlled timekeeping; GPS time adjustment alone does not make a watch a general-purpose smartwatch. See the Seiko Astron lineup.
What to verify before buying
- Identify the exact model number and whether the device is a fitness watch, Wear OS smartwatch or GPS timepiece.
- Check local production status, stock and price with a seller in your region; the official lineup and product pages do not establish current availability everywhere.
- For legacy Wear OS models, confirm that setup, app distribution and the functions you need still work with your phone. For the GSW-H1000, consult Casio’s current download instructions.
- Confirm the specific watch’s supported phone operating systems and regional service details on its model support page; do not infer them from another watch in the family.
Citizen’s Riiiver-connected Eco-Drive W770 is another historical Japanese connected-watch reference, but the available official material documents it as a past Riiiver-compatible initiative rather than establishing a current recommendation. Citizen’s Riiiver announcement provides that historical context.
