Five watches define this history of antimagnetism: the Tissot Antimagnetique, IWC Ingenieur, Rolex Milgauss, Omega Railmaster and Patek Philippe Amagnetic. They are historically significant examples, not a current, price-ranked buying list. For a modern benchmark in the sources cited here, Omega lists a 40 mm Railmaster reference as resistant to 15,000 gauss; Rolex’s official Milgauss guide specifies up to 1,000 gauss. Those figures come from different sources and should not be treated as results from identical test protocols.
What “antimagnetic” means—and what a rating tells you
A magnetic field can interfere with the operation of a mechanical watch. A stated resistance figure applies to the particular model and claim behind it; it is not a universal ranking system for every watch described as antimagnetic. A historical rating, a manufacturer’s product specification and a certification test are different kinds of evidence.
For example, Rolex’s official Milgauss user guide gives a resistance figure of up to 1,000 gauss, while Omega lists 15,000 gauss for a specified Railmaster reference. Tudor’s explanation of METAS Master Chronometer certification describes a 15,000-gauss test alongside other certification requirements. The shared unit does not establish that the watches or certification claims were assessed using identical protocols.
The five watches below are notable for their place in the history of watchmaking and magnetic resistance. Their historical ratings and descriptions are attributed to Time+Tide’s 2023 account unless an official brand source is cited.

Five notable antimagnetic watches
1. Tissot Antimagnetique
Time+Tide dates the Tissot Antimagnetique to 1930 and describes it as an early purpose-built response to magnetic interference. Its account reports variants ranging from 31 mm to 40 mm or larger, initially using calibre 21.7. These are historical details reported by Time+Tide, not current specifications for a single standard model.
Time+Tide also reports that Tissot revived the name in its Heritage line in 2018, with the watch later renamed Heritage Petite Seconde. The article cautions that this reissue did not include modern antimagnetic elements such as a silicon balance spring. The shared name therefore should not be read as proof that the reissue had the same construction or performance as a modern high-resistance watch.

2. IWC Ingenieur
Time+Tide dates the first IWC Ingenieur to 1955 and reports that its first reference was rated to 80,000 A/m, approximately 1,000 gauss. That figure belongs to the historical reference as described in the article; it should not be carried over to every later Ingenieur. The evidence cited here does not establish a current rating for the Ingenieur line.
3. Rolex Milgauss
Rolex says in its official user guide that the Milgauss was created in 1956 for engineers and technicians exposed at work to magnetic fields that could disrupt mechanical watches. The guide states that the Oyster Perpetual Milgauss was designed to resist interference of up to 1,000 gauss while maintaining chronometric performance. This is the manufacturer’s claim for the Milgauss, not a rating for Rolex watches generally.

Time+Tide recounts the early reference 6543, the development of reference 6541 in 1956, the watch’s association with CERN researchers and a later Z-Blue model. Those historical details are the article’s account. The official guide supports the model’s stated purpose and 1,000-gauss figure, but the sources cited here do not establish whether the Milgauss is currently in production or available in a particular market.
4. Omega Railmaster
The Railmaster was associated historically with railway and electrical-field environments in Time+Tide’s account. Omega’s current product listing provides a distinct modern reference point: reference 220.12.40.20.01.001 is a 40 mm Railmaster rated to 15,000 gauss and certified as a METAS Master Chronometer. Omega also lists 150 m water resistance, calibre 8806 and a 55-hour power reserve for that specific reference.

Omega’s catalog separately describes 38 mm Railmaster heritage models with 15,000-gauss resistance and METAS certification, calling the resistance 15 times that of the original Railmaster. Do not transfer the 40 mm reference’s other specifications to the 38 mm catalog models without checking their individual listings.
5. Patek Philippe Amagnetic
Time+Tide discusses Patek Philippe references 3417 and 3418, reporting the use of gold or beryllium escapement components and a soft-iron shield. The article gives a protection figure of 450 gauss and describes reference 3418 as extremely rare. These are secondary-source historical claims; the evidence cited here does not independently confirm them against Patek Philippe records or establish present-day specifications or availability.

How to interpret the figures and certification
| Watch or claim | Figure or standard | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Rolex Milgauss | Up to 1,000 gauss | Rolex’s official user guide states this resistance for the Milgauss; the guide’s publication date is not stated. |
| Omega Railmaster, reference 220.12.40.20.01.001 | 15,000 gauss | Omega’s product listing gives this figure for the 40 mm reference and identifies it as METAS Master Chronometer certified. |
| Omega Railmaster heritage catalog models | 15,000 gauss | Omega’s catalog separately gives this figure for 38 mm heritage models and describes them as METAS certified. |
| IWC Ingenieur, first reference | 80,000 A/m, reported as approximately 1,000 gauss | Time+Tide’s 2023 article reports the historical figure; it is not a rating for all Ingenieur generations. |
| Patek Philippe Amagnetic references 3417 and 3418 | 450 gauss | Time+Tide’s 2023 article reports the historical figure; independent primary-source confirmation is not established here. |
| Tudor’s explanation of METAS Master Chronometer certification | 15,000-gauss test; accuracy criterion of 0 to +5 seconds per day | Tudor describes these as certification criteria, alongside precision, water resistance and power reserve requirements. The explainer’s publication date is not stated. |
METAS certification is more than a magnetic-resistance number. Tudor’s explainer says it includes tests of precision, water resistance and power reserve, and identifies COSC certification and Swiss Made criteria among the prerequisites. Its stated accuracy criterion is 0 to +5 seconds per day under the described certification conditions. That certification framework should not be equated with every historical or manufacturer-stated use of the word “antimagnetic.”
Which one is the best choice?
There is no single winner for every reader in this group: the list mixes vintage milestones and modern catalog models, and the supporting figures are not all based on the same kind of evidence. If the priority is a clearly specified modern watch in the cited sources, the 40 mm Omega Railmaster reference is the most fully documented here: Omega supplies a magnetic-resistance rating, METAS certification and practical specifications on its product page. For a historical milestone, the Milgauss has an official Rolex guide documenting its original work-related purpose and its 1,000-gauss claim.
Historical importance does not establish current production or availability. Check the relevant brand or an authorized dealer for current models; vintage and discontinued references require a separate assessment of condition, authenticity and provenance.
Magnetic fields and safe use
The ratings described here are product and certification claims, not workplace safety guidance. They do not establish that any of these watches is safe to wear inside MRI equipment or near hazardous industrial fields. Follow the facility’s or employer’s safety rules rather than relying on a wristwatch rating.
