These five watch families and models offer different ways to get a chronograph tachymeter, from OMEGA’s ceramic Speedmaster variants to Seiko’s solar-powered Speedtimer. This is an editorial shortlist, not a measured best-to-worst ranking: some entries are confirmed by exact reference, while the TAG Heuer and Hamilton examples need availability or reference-specific checks.
How do you use a tachymeter on a watch?
A tachymeter converts elapsed time measured by a chronograph into an hourly rate. Start the chronograph at the beginning of a known distance and stop it at the end. The second hand points to the rate on the tachymeter scale. Hamilton’s watch manual explains: “The number indicated on the tachymeter scale by the second hand corresponds to the average speed achieved in km/h or mph.” Hamilton watch manual
For example, Seiko’s instructions show that taking 45 seconds to travel one kilometre corresponds to 80 km/h on the scale. That is an average speed over the measured kilometre, not an instantaneous reading. The common scale is easiest to use when the measurement takes no more than 60 seconds; if the elapsed time falls outside the scale’s range, the reading may not be useful. The same principle can estimate a repeated task’s hourly rate: time one task, then read how many could be completed in an hour at that pace. The scale may be printed on a bezel or dial, and its position and legibility vary by reference.

Five tachymeter watches and families to consider
The shortlist spans automatic and solar chronographs, different case sizes, and both confirmed references and model families that require a closer reference-level check. Confirm the exact dial, scale, regional listing and stock before buying; a collection name alone does not guarantee that every version has a tachymeter.
1. OMEGA Speedmaster 38 mm tachymeter variants
OMEGA’s August 25, 2026 release introduced seven references in the Speedmaster 38 mm family and describes tachymeter bezels on several variants. The range uses self-winding Co-Axial calibres 3330 and 3332, with case materials and dial treatments varying across the line. The press release does not establish regional stock, so check the individual reference and local availability rather than assuming every new version is offered in every market. The 38 mm format is a useful starting point for shoppers who want a smaller Speedmaster-family case than the 41 mm Seiko and TAG Heuer examples below, though actual wrist fit also depends on case shape and thickness. OMEGA President and CEO Raynald Aeschlimann described the collection this way: “The Speedmaster 38 mm has always taken its cues from the Moonwatch, while keeping size, colour, and simplicity in mind.”
2. OMEGA Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon tachymeter variants
The Dark Side of the Moon family is the ceramic-focused option here. OMEGA’s 2025 release describes a reworked model with a Liquidmetal tachymeter scale and calibre 9900, as well as an all-black model with an enamel tachymeter scale. It also describes an Apollo 8 version powered by calibre 3869. These are not interchangeable specifications: check the exact model for its movement and scale treatment. This family suits buyers drawn to a more striking ceramic presentation, but the release does not establish that every Dark Side variant has the same tachymeter scale or movement. Verify both before comparing a particular reference with other chronographs.
3. TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph, reference CBM2110.FC6454
The documented Carrera example is a 41 mm automatic chronograph with Calibre 16, a fixed tachymeter bezel, a 48-hour power reserve and 100 m water resistance. TAG Heuer’s regional product page explicitly marks reference CBM2110.FC6454 discontinued, so treat it as a pre-owned comparison—not as a confirmed new-watch purchase. The Carrera’s association with tachymeters is also part of the brand’s collection history. TAG Heuer’s Carrera history discusses the model’s connection to tachymeter scales. Do not assume that a current Carrera chronograph has one based on the family name alone: the retrieved 2025 brochure, for example, describes a 39 mm Glassbox chronograph with TH20-00 and an 80-hour reserve, but the cited material specifies a 60-second/minute flange rather than explicitly confirming a tachymeter. 4. Hamilton Intra-Matic Auto Chrono
Hamilton’s March 10, 2025 release presents the Intra-Matic Auto Chrono as a design inspired by the Chrono-matic, introduced in 1969. It highlights a white panda dial with two black subdials and a perforated leather strap. However, that release does not identify an exact current reference or confirm a tachymeter scale on that reference. Hamilton Intra-Matic release

Consider it only after checking the specific regional product listing or the watch itself for a tachymeter scale. Hamilton’s general tachymeter instructions explain how to use the function, but do not prove that a particular Intra-Matic has it.
5. Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC941
SSC941 is the most clearly documented exact reference in this shortlist: Seiko’s US product page specifies a solar-powered V192 movement, tachymeter function, 41.4 mm case, 60-minute chronograph and 10 bar water resistance. Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC941
Its solar power source distinguishes it from the automatic OMEGA and TAG Heuer examples. Seiko also lists the 39 mm SSC961 as a solar V192 Speedtimer with a tachymeter and approximately six months’ operation on a full charge. - For a smaller listed case: compare the Seiko SSC961 at 39 mm with OMEGA’s 38 mm family, while checking the exact OMEGA variant’s dimensions and dial.
- For a confirmed, practical tachymeter specification: Seiko SSC941 has an explicit function listing and published case, movement and water-resistance details.
- For automatic chronographs: the cited OMEGA 38 mm family and discontinued TAG Heuer reference are automatic; the Seiko references listed here use solar movements.
- For a pre-owned Carrera: confirm condition, service history and the exact CBM2110 reference, since its official regional listing is discontinued.
- For Hamilton: verify the scale on the precise Intra-Matic reference before treating it as a tachymeter watch.
