Five watches featured by Time+Tide in December 2020 still make a compelling shortlist: a vintage Rolex Sea-Dweller “Double Red,” a Patek Philippe world timer, an IWC pilot’s watch, a gold Rolex GMT-Master and a two-tone Sea-Dweller. But that old article does not establish that all five are available on eBay today. Treat them as models to search for, not verified current listings.
What the original five-watch list included
Time+Tide published its eBay-partnered selection on 23 December 2020. Its descriptions reflect that article, not an independent assessment of any watch currently offered for sale. The list spans vintage and more modern references, diver and pilot styles, and world-time and GMT complications.
Rolex Sea-Dweller ref. 1665 “Double Red”
The article highlighted the vintage steel sports watch as a rare “Double Red.” Its historical eBay listing is not evidence that the same example remains available. For any current listing, check the reference, dial details, condition, disclosed replacement parts and service history against the individual watch.
Patek Philippe Complications World Time ref. 5131J-001
The article described a yellow-gold case and cloisonné enamel dial centre on this world-time model. Those details do not verify the condition or authenticity of a current example. Carefully examine the listing’s photographs and description, and seek clarification about provenance and service.

IWC Mark XVIII Edition Le Petit Prince
Time+Tide presented this as a pilot’s watch in IWC’s Antoine de Saint Exupéry collection, with proportions and design drawing on World War II-era watches. Verify the exact reference and the individual watch’s condition, completeness and service documentation in any listing.
Rolex GMT-Master ref. 16758
The article described a yellow-gold example with a brown dial and bezel, Jubilee bracelet and 40 mm package. Do not assume those features apply to every watch advertised under the reference: confirm the configuration and any replacements from the listing and seller.

The 2020 article described this two-tone model as having a 4,000-foot depth rating and said it had been released the previous year. Those are historical claims, not current manufacturer verification. Check Rolex documentation for specifications and production context before relying on them.
How to find and compare current listings
Search eBay for the exact reference, then evaluate each individual watch rather than relying on a model name or a headline. The original article is a short editorial list, not a side-by-side appraisal; it establishes no market-value estimate, condition advantage or overall winner.

- Identity and configuration: Confirm the reference and compare the dial, case, bezel and bracelet in the photographs with the listing’s description. Ask the seller to explain any replacement parts or inconsistencies.
- Condition and service: Look for clear photographs from multiple angles, disclosed damage or restoration, and dated service records. Ask about provenance where relevant.
- Completeness: Check whether box, papers and other accessories are included; do not assume they come with the watch.
- Transaction terms: Review seller history, returns, shipping destination, delivery terms and any import implications before purchasing.
- Price: Compare asking prices only after accounting for reference, configuration, condition, service history and completeness. The 2020 list does not establish a current fair price.
What eBay Authenticity Guarantee covers
On eBay.com, the current official watch page says eligible wristwatches priced at $2,000 or more receive Authenticity Guarantee at no cost. Qualifying watches priced from $500 to $1,999.99 can use it as an $80 add-on. eBay says category experts inspect authenticity and whether condition matches the listing before shipment; items that fail are refunded, while minor discrepancies may be presented to the buyer to decide whether to proceed. Check the current terms and confirm the blue Authenticity Guarantee badge on the specific listing.
Eligibility is not universal. eBay’s stated limits exclude smartwatches, parts, accessories, customized watches, local-pickup-only listings and deliveries to PO boxes. Its current geography terms specify eBay.com and delivery within the continental United States, subject to qualifying seller and location exceptions. Vintage watches may qualify if they meet other criteria; eBay notes they may contain replacement parts when original parts are no longer made. A program description is not a promise that a particular listing or destination qualifies. Check eBay’s official watch Authenticity Guarantee terms and the listing itself.
