Who was Webb C. Ball?
Webb C. Ball was a watchmaker and businessman whose work linked his name to railroad time inspection. The Cleveland Public Library’s biographical record identifies him with watchmaking and the watch business, but it does not independently establish the detailed chronology of the company’s railroad story. The distinction matters: the modern BALL brand connects itself to his legacy, but that does not by itself establish that today’s corporate structure is identical to the historical business.
How did Ball watches become associated with railroads?
The Kipton collision and the 1891 appointment
BALL’s official history dates the Kipton collision to April 19, 1891, and says the investigation found that a watch involved in the accident was four minutes slow, alongside inadequate timekeeping practices. This account is the company’s retrospective, not independent archival proof of the accident’s findings. BALL says Webb C. In the role, Ball’s work concerned the accuracy and condition of railroad employees’ watches and the procedures used to keep time consistent. In an era when trains relied on schedules and time-based operating rules, inspection was part of the effort to reduce the risks created by inaccurate clocks and watches.
A company-reported reach of more than 180 lines
BALL’s history says Webb C. Ball continued inspection work alongside the business and, at its peak, inspected more than 180 railroad lines. The company does not specify the year of that peak, so the figure should be understood as a company-reported historical statistic, not a dated independent count. BALL’s official history

What did the Webb C. Ball Watch Company sell?
A contemporary document helps anchor the story beyond the company’s retrospective. A June 1906 Congressional Record letterhead names The Webb C. Ball Watch Company and describes it as offering “OFFICIAL STANDARD WATCHES FOR RAILROAD SERVICE.” The letter discusses the firm’s involvement in retailing, wholesaling, and manufacturing. It confirms the company’s railroad-watch business at that time; it does not establish that every watch meeting railroad standards was made by BALL. June 1906 Congressional Record
That distinction is important when describing historical watches. Railroad standards applied to watches used in service, while the company’s documented business included selling and dealing in watches as well as manufacturing. The letterhead is evidence of the company’s claim and commercial position, not proof of the maker of every individual railroad watch.

Are Ball watches still made?
Yes. The present-day BALL company sells watches in collections including Engineer, Roadmaster, Trainmaster, and Fireman. Its site describes its mission as “Accuracy Under Adverse Conditions” and says it continues the tradition of Webster Clay Ball. Those are current brand statements and product offerings; the collections page is the best place to check what is presently available. BALL collections
The owner manual calls a BALL watch “a genuine tribute to the American railroad history” and describes the watches as Swiss-made. That is heritage positioning, not evidence that current models are railroad-issued instruments or direct continuations of historical railroad service watches. BALL owner manual

Modern technology and the railroad legacy
BALL currently emphasizes self-powered micro gas light technology. The company says its illumination lasts at least 25 years; this is the manufacturer’s claim, rather than an independently established test result. BALL micro gas light product information
The historical and modern sides of the brand therefore meet most clearly in their shared focus on legibility and timekeeping under demanding conditions. The products themselves belong to different contexts: railroad-era watches served an operational role, while today’s collections are Swiss-made modern watches marketed with a connection to that history.

How should collectors read the history?
- Separate a documented business from a brand narrative. BALL’s official history supplies the Kipton account, appointment dates, and inspection figure; treat those as company-reported history.
- Use the 1906 letterhead for contemporary context. It confirms the company described itself as offering official-standard railroad watches, but it does not identify the maker of every qualifying watch.
- Distinguish period and purpose. A railroad-era pocket watch and a present-day BALL wristwatch are not interchangeable simply because the current brand invokes railroad heritage.
- Assess individual vintage pieces on their own evidence. Maker, model, condition, serviceability, and provenance should be established for the particular watch rather than inferred from a broad historical association.
