The Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC813 is a well-documented panda-style chronograph candidate, with a light dial and darker subdials, solar power, a 39 mm case, sapphire crystal and a 60-minute chronograph. It is not possible to call it the definitive “best” panda chronograph from the available official specifications: the manufacturer does not use that label, and the evidence here does not support a market-wide ranking.
What makes a chronograph a panda dial?
“Panda” describes the dial’s contrast: a light-colored main dial with darker subdials. “Reverse panda” generally means a dark main dial with lighter subdials. These are visual descriptions, not a guarantee of a manufacturer’s model name or classification. Check the actual dial layout and colors for the specific reference rather than relying on a product title or the broad description “black and white.”
Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC813: the strongest documented panda-style candidate
The SSC813 is a solar-powered chronograph in Seiko’s Prospex Speedtimer collection. Seiko’s official product page does not call it a panda dial watch; the panda-style description is based on its contrasting dial layout. Seiko places the solar Speedtimer family in a design lineage drawing on Speedtimer styles from the 1960s and 1970s, and lists the SSC813 among its solar chronograph models on the Speedtimer collection page.

#1 Best Overall
- Powered by light energy, with no battery change required, this timepiece automatically receives radio signals to precisely adjust the time and calendar and has a 6-month power reserve once fully charged
- Case Diameter: 44.5mm
- The intricately patterned black dial with gold accents features a chronograph, radio signal reception display, power reserve indicator, date calendar, and LumiBrite hands and markers
- The angular two-tone stainless steel case is paired with an integrated bracelet and includes a sapphire crystal and cabochon crown
- Water-resistant to 10 bar, 100 meters (330 feet)
Why it merits a shortlist
- Solar power avoids routine battery replacement; Seiko states approximately six months of operation from a full charge.
- The 39.0 mm diameter and 45.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement give useful dimensions for comparing case size on paper.
- Sapphire crystal, 10 bar water resistance and a 60-minute chronograph make its feature set straightforward to assess against other candidates.
Specifications cannot establish how a watch will wear on an individual wrist, its long-term reliability, or how it compares in real-world performance with other chronographs.
Tissot PR516: a related chronograph, not a confirmed panda pick
Tissot’s official page for model T1494171104101 describes a 40 mm quartz PR516 chronograph with a blue-gradient dial. It lists a sapphire crystal, tachymeter, 10 bar water resistance, 20 mm lug width, quick-release bracelet, and 30-minute and 1/10-second counters. The page does not establish a panda dial layout, so this is an adjacent reference for comparing quartz chronograph specifications—not a confirmed panda-style recommendation. See Tissot’s PR516 page.

How to compare panda chronographs before buying
- Dial layout: Confirm that the main dial is light and the subdials are darker if you want a classic panda configuration; reverse panda means the opposite contrast.
- Case dimensions: Compare diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug length, not diameter alone. These measurements help narrow fit but do not replace trying a watch on.
- Movement: Decide whether solar or quartz operation suits you, and compare it with mechanical options only when each model’s specifications are verified.
- Chronograph scale and counters: Check the measured interval and resolution—for example, a 60-minute counter with 1/5-second increments differs from 30-minute and 1/10-second counters.
- Materials and practical details: Compare crystal type, water-resistance rating, lug width and bracelet or strap arrangement.
- Price and availability: Confirm the current price and stock for your country with a local seller or manufacturer; a regional listing may not apply where you live.
The official specifications establish a strong candidate in the SSC813 and a related Tissot comparison, but not enough verified panda-dial models to rank the full category or identify a best-value, best-mechanical or best-small-case winner.
