A. Lange & Söhne was founded in Glashütte in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange, disappeared after postwar expropriation, and returned in 1990 when his great-grandson Walter Lange rebuilt the family manufacture with Günter Blümlein. The decisive comeback came on 24 October 1994, when the LANGE 1, ARKADE, SAXONIA and TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” were unveiled at Dresden’s Royal Palace. Those watches established the design and engineering principles that still define the brand: restrained German forms, elaborate hand finishing and technically unusual displays. The LANGE 1 became the signature, while the DATOGRAPH, ZEITWERK, high complications and ODYSSEUS extended that identity into chronographs, jumping numerals and sportier daily wear.
When was A. Lange & Söhne founded?
Ferdinand Adolph Lange established the Glashütte manufacture in 1845. His workshop helped turn the small Saxon town into a centre of precision watchmaking, a role that later became central to the brand’s identity. The historical manufacture was known for carefully regulated movements, hand finishing and pocket watches built around the Glashütte three-quarter plate.

That first era ended after the Second World War. The company was expropriated in East Germany, and the Lange name nearly vanished for more than four decades. The modern company is therefore not a continuous operation in the usual sense; it is a deliberate revival of a nineteenth-century family name and technical tradition.
What happened to the company after World War II?
Postwar nationalisation removed the Lange family from control and folded the business into East Germany’s state watch industry. The family name lost its commercial presence while Glashütte watchmaking continued under different organisations. This interruption explains why the modern manufacture’s history is usually described in two stages: the 1845 foundation and the 1990 re-foundation.

How was A. Lange & Söhne revived in 1990?
Walter Lange, Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s great-grandson, returned to Glashütte after German reunification and relaunched the family name in 1990. Günter Blümlein supplied the strategic direction and helped assemble the modern manufacture. Walter Lange later summed up Blümlein’s contribution by saying: “Without Günter Blümlein, A. Lange & Söhne would no longer exist – and Glashütte would not once again be the centre of German precision watchmaking today.”
The revival was not a simple reissue programme. The new company developed proprietary movements, restored historical finishing practices and created a visual language that could be recognised immediately without copying a vintage model. The result was a high-watchmaking house with German rather than Swiss design cues: precise layouts, three-quarter plates, engraved balance cocks, blued screws and a preference for mechanical solutions that are visible and explainable.
What watches launched the modern brand in 1994?
On 24 October 1994, at Dresden’s Royal Palace, the revived manufacture presented four watches: LANGE 1, ARKADE, SAXONIA and TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite.” Together they announced the range’s breadth: an unconventional everyday watch, a shaped design, a restrained dress watch and a technically ambitious tourbillon.
| 1994 model | Role in the comeback | Defining idea |
|---|---|---|
| LANGE 1 | Signature modern design | Off-centre displays and patented outsize date |
| ARKADE | Shaped-case expression | A non-round profile within the new collection |
| SAXONIA | Classical dress watch | Restrained proportions and high movement finishing |
| TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” | Technical flagship | Tourbillon combined with fusée-and-chain transmission |
The four watches made the brand’s strategy clear: modernity would come from engineering and proportion, not from oversized branding or decorative excess. Blümlein described the ambition behind the work this way: “A Lange watch is a complete work of art. It combines the watchmakers’ passion for mechanics and craftsmanship with the house’s unmistakable style and its rich history.”
Why is the LANGE 1 so important?
The LANGE 1 became the emblem of the revival because its dial looked unlike a conventional three-hand watch while remaining immediately legible. Its hours-and-minutes display, subsidiary seconds and power-reserve indication are arranged off-centre rather than stacked symmetrically. The patented outsize date, introduced with calibre L901.0 in 1994, gives the watch a second instantly recognisable feature.
The watch also connected the new wristwatch to historical Lange pocket watches. Its movement uses a three-quarter plate, blued screws, a hand-engraved balance cock and a whiplash precision index adjuster. These are functional and decorative elements, but they are arranged as part of the architecture rather than applied as surface ornament. Walter Lange’s legacy profile credits the off-centre dial and outsize date with making the greatest contribution to the brand’s resurgence.

How does the LANGE 1 differ from a conventional dress watch?
A conventional dress watch usually centres the hands and places seconds at six o’clock. The LANGE 1 deliberately decentralises those indications, using calculated overlaps and a visual relationship between the displays instead of bilateral symmetry. Its date is also a true mechanism, not merely a small numbered subdial: the large date apertures were engineered to change in a crisp, legible jump.
What makes the TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” historically significant?
The 1994 TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” combined a tourbillon with a fusée-and-chain transmission, a solution associated with precision pocket watches. The fusée-and-chain system uses a chain wrapped around a cone-shaped fusée to even out the torque delivered by the mainspring as it unwinds. In the chronology of modern wristwatches, calibre L902.0 is identified as the first movement to combine that transmission with a tourbillon.
Its importance is therefore broader than rarity. It demonstrated that the revived company could take a difficult historical mechanism, miniaturise it for the wrist and integrate it into a movement finished to contemporary haute-horlogerie standards.
What is distinctive about the SAXONIA?
SAXONIA was one of the four 1994 launch watches and represents the most restrained side of the collection. Slender cases, clear markers and an uncluttered dial put the emphasis on proportion. Through the case back, Glashütte ribbing, blued screws and hand-engraved balance cocks make the movement as considered as the dial.

The manufacture describes its movements as being assembled twice: first for functional assembly and adjustment, then disassembled, cleaned, finished and assembled again. That approach helps explain why a simple-looking SAXONIA can demand substantial watchmaker time. Its historical role is that of a foundation model—less visually radical than the LANGE 1, but essential to the brand’s formal vocabulary.
When did the DATOGRAPH establish Lange’s chronograph identity?
The first DATOGRAPH arrived in 1999 with calibre L951.1, the manufacture’s first modern-era in-house chronograph movement. Its dial combines an outsize date with two lower subsidiary dials, producing a layout that is both balanced and recognisable. Technically, it uses a column-wheel chronograph, a flyback function and a minute counter that advances in a precise jump rather than creeping around the dial.

The flyback lets the wearer stop, reset and restart the chronograph in one operation, useful when timing successive events. The jumping minute counter removes the ambiguity found in some chronographs, where the minute hand sits between markers while the seconds hand crosses the sixty-second boundary. Blümlein explained the design goal at the time: “From the beginning, it was important for us to create watches whose sleek, classic appearance is an expression of supreme modernity.”
Why do collectors treat the DATOGRAPH as a landmark?
It was the first clear proof that the revived manufacture could design a sophisticated chronograph from the movement upward rather than adapt an existing calibre. The combination of a column wheel, flyback, jumping minute display and outsize date gave the watch a technical identity that was as distinctive as the LANGE 1’s dial.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat is the ZEITWERK’s contribution to the brand?
The ZEITWERK replaced analogue hands with precisely jumping numerals. Hours and minutes appear in separate digital apertures and advance in discrete jumps, while a conventional subsidiary seconds display preserves a mechanical-watch cue. This is a very different display language from the decentralised LANGE 1, yet it follows the same principle: make the mechanism’s action visible and legible.
ZEITWERK established that A. Lange & Söhne could be radically modern without abandoning traditional movement construction and hand finishing. Its jumping indications require substantial energy management and a carefully controlled switching system, making the display concept an engineering statement as much as a stylistic one.
Which Lange watches represent extreme complications?
The manufacture’s high-complication strategy is represented by watches such as the Triple Split, ZEITWERK Minute Repeater and Grand Complication. The Triple Split extends split-seconds timing by allowing comparative measurement of longer events, while the ZEITWERK Minute Repeater combines jumping numerals with a chiming mechanism. The Grand Complication, introduced in 2013, brings multiple demanding functions into one hand-finished movement.
These watches are important because they show the range of the modern manufacture beyond its core time-and-date and chronograph lines. They are produced in very small numbers and are typically discussed through specialist collecting and auction provenance rather than ordinary retail availability. Sotheby’s documented auction category includes rare Tourbograph, DATOGRAPH Perpetual Tourbillon, TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” and ZEITWERK examples.

What changed when the ODYSSEUS arrived in 2019?
The ODYSSEUS, introduced in 2019, broadened the brand’s wearing context with a sporty-elegant design. It brought the manufacture’s finishing standards and mechanical identity into a more casual, robust format instead of positioning every model as a traditional dress or complication watch.
Its historical importance is strategic: the collection acknowledges that a high-end mechanical watch may be worn daily, with sportier clothing and in less formal settings, while still retaining the visual discipline associated with Glashütte construction.
How do the most important models compare?
The right choice depends less on a simple ranking than on the kind of display, complication and wearing context you want. The following framework separates those decisions.
| Model or family | Display language | Primary complication or feature | Historical role | Typical wearing context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LANGE 1 | Decentralised analogue displays | Patented outsize date | Signature of the 1994 revival | Formal and everyday dress |
| SAXONIA | Classical, restrained analogue | Time-focused simplicity, depending on version | One of the four original launch watches | Traditional formal wear |
| DATOGRAPH | Analogue with two lower counters | Flyback chronograph and jumping minute counter | 1999 debut of the modern in-house chronograph | Collector-focused daily or formal wear |
| TOURBILLON “Pour le Mérite” | Classical complication display | Tourbillon and fusée-and-chain | Technical statement of the 1994 comeback | Special-occasion collecting |
| ZEITWERK | Jumping digital numerals | Mechanically controlled jumping hours and minutes | Modern display icon | Statement and collector wear |
| ODYSSEUS | Sport-oriented analogue display | Integrated sporty-elegant construction | 2019 expansion of the range | Sportier daily use |
How many movements has A. Lange & Söhne developed?
The reported figure depends on the date of the source. The manufacture’s 2023 “71 Masterpieces” presentation described 71 distinctive movements; a 2024 DATOGRAPH retrospective stated that 72 movements had been developed and crafted in-house since re-establishment. Richemont’s current Maison page, accessed in 2026, lists 73 manufacture calibres developed since 1990. These are cumulative counts, not annual production totals.

Richemont describes annual output only as “a few thousand wristwatches per year,” without publishing a precise yearly number. Its current page also lists a network of 45 stores and highlights the 2026 SAXONIA ANNUAL CALENDAR and LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR “Lumen,” showing that the manufacture continues to extend both classical and complicated lines.
What makes these watches collectible?
Collectability is shaped by more than the logo. The most influential factors are a model’s production status, complication, rarity, condition, provenance and completeness of its movement and accessories. The original 1994 quartet has historical importance because it marks the public rebirth. The DATOGRAPH is significant as the first modern in-house chronograph. Rare complications such as the fusée-and-chain tourbillon, Triple Split and Grand Complication occupy a different tier because production is far more limited and servicing is more specialised.

Auction records can establish provenance for individual examples, but they do not create a universal value guide. Reference, metal, dial configuration, service history and documented ownership all need to be assessed separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is A. Lange & Söhne a Swiss watch brand?
No. Its historic and modern manufacture is based in Glashütte, Saxony, Germany. The brand’s German identity is expressed through its three-quarter plates, movement architecture and precision-focused finishing rather than Swiss production.
What does the name “Söhne” mean?
“Söhne” means “sons” in German, reflecting the original family-company name, A. Lange & Söhne. The name was revived by Walter Lange after the family’s postwar expropriation.
Does every Lange watch have an outsize date?
No. The outsize date is most closely associated with the LANGE 1 and DATOGRAPH families. Other lines, including SAXONIA, ZEITWERK and ODYSSEUS, use different display systems and may omit a date entirely.
Why are Lange movements decorated with a three-quarter plate?
The three-quarter plate is a Glashütte construction tradition that supports much of the gear train on one broad plate. In modern Lange movements it also provides a large surface for ribbing, engraving and carefully arranged screw and jewel details.
How often should a complicated Lange watch be serviced?
A fixed interval is not stated in the historical material, and the appropriate schedule depends on the calibre, use and operating condition. Owners should follow the manufacture’s current service guidance and use a qualified service centre, especially for fusée-and-chain, repeater or split-seconds mechanisms.
