The A. Lange & Söhne LANGE 1 is recognizable for a dial that refuses the usual centered layout: its large hours-and-minutes display sits left of center, balanced by an outsize date, power-reserve indicator and subsidiary seconds. Launched on 24 October 1994, it paired that distinctive arrangement with a new chapter for the revived manufacture. The design has remained visually consistent while its movement has evolved.
What makes the LANGE 1 distinctive?
The dial is organized asymmetrically rather than around a single central axis. A large hours-and-minutes circle occupies the left side; the outsize date sits at upper right, with the power-reserve display and subsidiary seconds below. A. Lange & Söhne says the proportions follow the golden ratio. The layout is unusual, but its displays remain clearly separated and readable.
The outsize date is a particularly recognizable feature. It gives the date display a presence comparable to the main time display, rather than treating it as a small window tucked into the edge of the dial. The original watch used calibre L901.0. The movement combined traditional Lange details—including a hand-engraved balance cock and a three-quarter plate—with the mechanism and architecture required by the LANGE 1’s unusual display. How the movement changed
The LANGE 1’s exterior changed only in small ways as its movement developed. In 2015, calibre L121.1 replaced the original L901.0 in the standard model. The change brought a free-sprung balance spring and a date mechanism that jumps instantaneously at midnight, according to the manufacturer. A. For its 2024 anniversary release, the company described L121.1 as a manually wound manufacture calibre comprising 368 parts, with a twin mainspring barrel and a stated 72-hour power reserve. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent timing-test results. Nor should the L121.1 be assumed to power every watch in the broader LANGE 1 family: individual variants may have different complications and movements.
Which LANGE 1 versions are available?
The family extends beyond the standard time-and-date model. A. Lange & Söhne lists versions including the GRANDE LANGE 1 and models with moon-phase, time-zone or perpetual-calendar complications. Their displays, dimensions and calibres differ, so compare the specification for the exact reference rather than generalizing from the standard LANGE 1. How to compare models
- Size: The cited anniversary release specifies a 38.5 mm case for the LANGE 1 and 36.8 mm for the LITTLE LANGE 1. Check the exact reference for other models.
- Material and dial: The anniversary pair contrasts platinum with black onyx and pink gold with a blue dial.
- Complications: The standard LANGE 1’s display differs from family members with moon-phase, time-zone or calendar functions. Consider which indications you want before comparing references.
- Movement: The historical baseline is L901.0, while L121.1 replaced it in the standard LANGE 1 in 2015. Confirm the calibre listed for the particular reference under consideration.
In the anniversary announcement, A. Lange & Söhne Director of Product Development Anthony de Haas described the watch as “Developed out of the passion to do things differently” and as a symbol of the manufacture’s aim to combine functionality with aesthetic appeal.
