Lange & Söhne ZEITWERK HONEYGOLD “Lumen” earns a grail-watch case on the strength of its jumping mechanical display, unusual luminous dial, proprietary Honeygold case and technically distinctive movement. Whether it is worth pursuing is ultimately subjective; the specifications explain its appeal, but they cannot establish how it feels on the wrist or whether its current price is right for you.
What makes the Zeitwerk Honeygold “Lumen” unusual?
Reference 142.055, announced on 24 October 2021, brings together three defining elements: the Zeitwerk’s mechanical jumping-numeral display, a semi-transparent luminous dial, and A. Lange & Söhne’s proprietary 18-carat Honeygold. The manufacturer limited the edition to 200 watches. A. Lange & Söhne’s product page and its 2021 announcement describe the model and its construction.

How does the jumping display work?
This is a mechanical watch with a digital-style display, not an electronic digital watch. Read the hours and minutes from left to right: a large hour ring sits beside two minute discs, with a curved time bridge framing the numerals. At each minute, at least one disc advances; at the top of the hour, all three display elements jump together.
The changing numerals are driven by the movement. The result is a legible, unconventional presentation of time, with the synchronized hourly change giving the display its most dramatic transition.

How does the Lumen dial glow?
The dial is a specially coated, semi-transparent sapphire crystal. Its coating filters some visible light while passing most ultraviolet radiation, so UV can charge luminous pigments on the numeral discs beneath the dial. In darkness, numerals glow as they appear through the display apertures. In daylight, the mechanism is only faintly visible through the dial, a design choice intended to preserve legibility, according to the manufacturer.
What is inside calibre L043.9?
The manually wound L043.9 has two mainspring barrels and a stated 72-hour power reserve. A patented constant-force escapement supplies the impulse for the display jump and drives the balance with nearly uniform power over the reserve period; A. Lange & Söhne says this has a positive effect on rate stability. The manufacturer lists 462 movement parts and a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 Hz) on its product page.
The movement can be seen through the sapphire caseback. The brand describes hand-engraved balance and escape-wheel cocks and a twofold assembly process.

How are the time and hour set?
The controls separate the two adjustments. The crown at 2 o’clock sets the minute display in either direction; a pusher at 4 o’clock corrects the hour independently. The pusher’s switching impulse occurs when it is released.
What are the case and edition details?
The case measures 41.9 mm in diameter and is made from 18-carat Honeygold, an alloy exclusive to Lange that the manufacturer describes as especially hard and warm in hue. The dark dial is paired with a dark-brown leather strap. The power-reserve and subsidiary-seconds hands, along with the prong buckle, are also Honeygold. Hodinkee’s 2021 launch coverage reports a case thickness of 12.6 mm.
The limited edition comprises 200 pieces. That figure is the announced production limit, not an indication of how many remain available.

Is it worth the grail-watch label?
As an object of design and engineering, the case is persuasive: the display is mechanically complex yet immediately readable, the dial makes the numerals’ changing light part of the watch’s identity, and Honeygold gives this execution a material distinction from steel or conventional gold versions. The movement adds a substantial reserve and a constant-force system tailored to the demands of the jumping display.
The trade-off is that this is a highly specific luxury watch, not a neutral choice. Its unusual display and luminous treatment are central to its appeal, so anyone seeking a conventional dial or a discreet, easily compared specification set may prefer another watch. A grail judgment also depends on fit and personal preference; the specifications alone cannot substitute for trying it on.
What did it cost at launch, and what is it worth now?
