For a week, Time+Tide’s Luke Benedictus wore Tikker, a digital watch that counts down an estimated remaining lifespan beside the local time. The display made mortality hard to ignore—and, in Benedictus’s account, nudged him into conversations about family, insurance and a will. It did not tell him when he would die: the countdown was an imprecise estimate, not a personal prognosis.
What the Tikker “death watch” displays
Tikker is a physical digital wristwatch built around a countdown to an estimated end of life. In his 2020 review, Benedictus describes three rows: years, months and days remaining; hours, minutes and seconds remaining; and the local time. The watch does not establish a personal death date, and the review does not show that it monitors health or continuously revises the estimate.
Benedictus calls the estimate “a vague approximation at best.” The exact formula, mortality table version and validation method are not established in the review, so its countdown is best understood as a stark display of an estimate—not a medical forecast.
One week with the countdown
The first jolt
Benedictus says seeing the countdown on his wrist initially felt confronting. The watch prompted him to talk with his wife, check whether he had life insurance, contact his super fund and search for information on how to make a will. Those practical questions emerged from one writer’s experience; the review does not establish that Tikker reliably changes behavior for other wearers.

Ordinary life, with mortality in view
The week was not all paperwork. Benedictus recounts drinking wine, having sex, taking a day off and walking with his family. Later, he describes choosing a more purposeful routine. The tension is part of the story: an unusually blunt reminder of death sits beside the familiar pleasures and obligations of daily life.
His verdict was mixed. He found the watch oversized and the lifespan estimate imprecise, but said the constant reminder helped him appreciate his family and everyday life. Benedictus summed up the experience as “a bit like having a gratitude journal on my wrist that also sharpened my life priorities.” That is his personal response, not evidence of a therapeutic effect.

How wearable is it?
Time+Tide’s review gives the watch’s width as 46 mm and thickness as 10 mm. Benedictus found it large and clunky. Those measurements help explain why the concept may be more compelling than the object for someone who prefers a discreet watch; the review does not offer a comparison against tested competing models.
Is it the “Death Watch” or the “Happiness Watch”?
The naming captures the product’s uneasy pitch. A companion Time+Tide story calls Tikker the “Happiness Watch.” Co-founder Daniel Iketani explained: “This started out with the moniker of ‘The Death Watch’. But if you look at the the box, what it actually says is ‘The Happiness Watch’.” The countdown can be framed as either a morbid novelty or a prompt to spend time deliberately; the week-long review shows how both readings can coexist.

What the review says about price and availability
Time+Tide listed a price of US$59.99 in its 2020 review. That is a historical price, not a current quote. An older 2015 product roundup mentions an Amazon listing, but that does not verify present stock, the seller, return terms or support. If you find a listing, check that it is the actual countdown model, inspect its condition and seller, and confirm the return policy, battery or reset behavior, and available support before buying.

Benedictus’s insurance questions are a personal anecdote, not a reason to buy, change or cancel a policy based on a countdown. For Australian consumers, Moneysmart advises considering coverage, exclusions, personal circumstances and medical history when assessing life insurance. Its claims comparison tool also notes that processing through a super fund may extend beyond the insurer’s claim time. Those are general consumer considerations, not individualized financial advice.

Does Tikker really tell you when you’ll die?
No. It displays an estimated remaining lifespan alongside the time. The review itself characterizes that estimate as vague, and it does not establish a particular formula or validate the output as an individual prediction.
