A week with the Rolex Explorer 36 reference 124270 left T3 reviewer Roland Moore-Colyer with a useful paradox: its plain black dial and no-date layout look almost deliberately boring, yet the watch proved more engaging and versatile on the wrist than he expected. That is his experience, not a universal fit verdict—but it explains the appeal of a watch that asks for little attention and still feels considered.
What watch did the review cover?
Moore-Colyer wore the Rolex Explorer 36, reference 124270, in Oystersteel with a black dial. His account appeared in T3 on 27 February 2025. Rolex’s US product page lists the reference at $7,900; that is a US-listed price shown on the page accessed 3 October 2026, not a worldwide price or a guarantee of availability.
The watch’s restraint is the point. There is no date window to interrupt the dial, no rotating bezel, and no decorative complication competing for attention. The familiar 3, 6, and 9 numerals give the face its identity, while the rest of the layout stays clean and legible.
Why did a basic watch feel less boring after a week?
Moore-Colyer expected the Explorer’s simplicity to risk dullness. Instead, he found that the black dial looked balanced in the 36 mm case and that the watch worked in a broader range of settings than its plain appearance might suggest. It is not a dramatic, attention-seeking design; its interest lies in proportion, finish, and the ease of wearing it day after day.

He also warmed to the Oyster bracelet more than he had expected. He had considered trying the watch on a sailcloth strap, but the bracelet’s feel changed his mind. That is a personal impression rather than a claim that every owner will prefer the bracelet. The reported lug width is 19 mm; anyone considering a strap change should confirm reference-specific compatibility and installation details rather than assume a replacement will fit.
How does the 36 mm Explorer fit?
The reviewer tried both current sizes and preferred the 36 mm’s proportions and slightly more formal presence. He reported approximate measurements of 43 mm lug-to-lug, 19 mm lug width, and 11.5 mm thickness. Those are Moore-Colyer’s measurements; Rolex’s official product page confirms the 36 mm diameter but does not state the other dimensions in the source consulted.

Moore-Colyer describes the case sides as gently curved, which in his view makes the watch sit visually lower. Whether that shape and size work for you depends on your wrist, how much dial coverage you like, and whether you want a discreet or more substantial watch. The 36 mm is not automatically too small, nor is the 40 mm automatically the better modern choice.

What does the Explorer name mean historically?
Rolex says Oyster Perpetual watches accompanied the 1953 Everest expedition and that the company launched the Explorer later that year. The distinction matters: the expedition’s watches should not be described as Explorer models. Rolex’s history places the expedition and the Explorer’s introduction in the same context, without establishing that Hillary or Norgay climbed wearing the Explorer that was launched afterward.
Is the Explorer 124270 worth considering?
Moore-Colyer’s week suggests why the Explorer can appeal to someone who values a straightforward daily watch: it has a legible, uncluttered dial, restrained styling, and a bracelet he came to appreciate in use. Its simplicity will also be a drawback for anyone who wants a date display, a more elaborate dial, or a watch with a louder visual identity. The most useful decision is whether the 36 mm proportions suit you; the reviewer’s preference is a starting point, not a fit rule.
