That single sentence is what the available reporting confirms. The supporting figures and arguments that would show how strong the claim is were not accessible when this was written, so this article explains the claim and what it would take to test it, without adding numbers the column is not known to contain.
What the source establishes
The column appears in the “According To Ariel” series and is dated 23 December 2024. It was reproduced in a syndicated WatchWorld listing, which quotes its opening line. The listing says the observation continues beyond that line, but it does not reproduce the rest, so the reasoning, data and any country rankings behind it are not available here.
Two different meanings of “European watch market”
The phrase can mean two things, and the column’s opening separates them:
- Origin (production): where luxury watches are designed, assembled and finished. This is a question about manufacturing footprint and brand headquarters.
- Destination (sales): where luxury watches are bought and worn. This is a question about the location of customers, retail networks and spending.
A market can be strong on one side and weak on the other. A country or region that produces most of the world’s high-end watches may still sell a smaller share of them domestically, because demand is concentrated elsewhere. The opening sentence points at exactly this gap. It does not say how large the gap is.

What is not established
Several things a reader might want to know are not confirmed by the accessible text:
- The share of luxury watch production attributed to Europe, and the period it covers.
- The share of sales that take place in Europe, and which buyer markets account for the rest.
- Whether the observation refers to 2024 alone or to a longer trend.
- Any named sources, company data or quotations from industry figures.
Until the full column is consulted, treat the production-versus-sales contrast as the column’s stated premise, not as a measured result.

How to check the claim yourself
Readers who want to assess the premise independently can work from public information rather than from the column alone:
- Start with a list of brands you consider luxury watchmakers, and note the country of each brand’s headquarters and main production site as listed on its own website.
- Separately, look at where those brands report their retail presence and main sales regions in annual reports, where published. Privately held brands may publish less.
- Compare the two lists. If most headquarters and production sites sit in one region while most retail demand sits in another, the column’s premise holds for that sample.
- Repeat the check with a different sample, such as only independent makers or only the largest groups, to see whether the pattern survives.
This method is limited by what brands disclose. A brand’s own statement of where it “sells” may not match the location of the buyers, and sample choice can change the result.

Why the distinction matters for buyers
For collectors and everyday buyers, the difference between origin and sales affects pricing, availability and where to find after-sales service. A watch made in one region may be sold mostly through distributors elsewhere, so the place where you buy it is not necessarily the place it was made. Knowing which side of the market a claim describes helps you read industry commentary correctly.

Ariel’s column, as reproduced in a WatchWorld listing dated 23 December 2024, argues that Europe is the main origin of luxury watches but not the main place they are sold.
