The result is a fluid-moving seconds hand paired with conventional step-driven hour and minute hands. The open-work design makes that unusual system visible, but practical details—including how the seconds hand behaves when idle, the size and water resistance of a specific reference, and the supplied strap—vary in importance from one version to another.
How the Accutron Spaceview 2020’s electrostatic movement works
Accutron identifies the movement as its proprietary NS30 ElectroStatic. In the manufacturer’s explanation, human motion turns twin turbines between electrodes; the resulting electrostatic energy is stored in an accumulator and then used to power two motors. Accutron describes the arrangement on the 2ES6A005B product page: “The energy, stored in an accumulator, powers two motors; a world’s first electrostatic motor fueling the fluid second hand and a step motor powering the hour and minute hands.” That is the manufacturer’s account of the design, not an independent measurement of its performance.
The key distinction is that the seconds hand and the timekeeping hands do not share the same drive. The electrostatic motor moves the fluid seconds hand, while a step motor moves the hour and minute hands. That split is the technical feature to understand when considering the watch; the visible open-work layout is also a deliberate link to the 1960s Spaceview design, as Accutron presents it on its collection page.
What happens when the seconds hand stops?
Accutron says that after five minutes without activity, the seconds hand stops at 12 while the hour and minute hands continue keeping time. It is therefore not an indication that the entire watch has stopped. To reactivate the seconds hand, the manufacturer instructs the wearer to swing the arm fully up and down for 3 to 5 seconds. The hand then gradually returns to the current seconds indication.

This behavior is worth knowing before buying: a stationary seconds hand at 12 after inactivity is part of the stated operating behavior, rather than evidence by itself that the watch needs attention. The available product information does not establish a measured power reserve, accuracy result, or long-term reliability record.
Case size, water resistance, and reference-specific details

Heritage and launch
Accutron presents the modern Spaceview 2020 as a revival of the open-work design associated with the 1960s Spaceview. A Citizen Watch Co. announcement hosted by atPress said the Spaceview 2020 and Accutron DNA were scheduled to launch on November 27, 2020, during the brand’s 60th-anniversary year. That establishes the modern model’s launch context, but the cited material does not support a detailed comparison with the original watch’s movement or historical accuracy.
Quick Recap
What to verify before buying
- Exact reference: Match the product page to the reference you intend to buy; dimensions and supplied configuration may differ.
- Strap or bracelet: Confirm whether the listing includes a strap or steel bracelet, and whether an easy-release spring bar is specified.
- Water use: Treat the 50 m / 5 bar rating for 2ES6A005B according to Accutron’s still-water-swimming guidance, not as a diving specification.
- Current terms: Recheck price, stock, warranty booklet, and purchase terms for your region. Accutron Japan’s support information describes a five-year international warranty, but that geographically specific statement should not be generalized to a US purchase.
- Performance expectations: The product details cited here do not establish independent accuracy testing, long-term reliability, service history, or replacement-strap compatibility dimensions.
