If Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) on your AirPods Pro seems weak or has stopped working, do not assume the earbuds are broken. The most common causes are Adaptive Audio being enabled, a poor ear-tip seal, blocked microphones or speaker meshes, incorrect listening-mode settings, outdated software, and pairing problems.

Work through the checks below in order: select fixed ANC, turn off Adaptive Audio, test the seal, clean the earbuds safely, update your Apple devices and AirPods firmware, then reset and reconnect them. If the same fault remains—especially in only one earbud—service is the next sensible step.

First, identify what “ANC not working” means

Different symptoms point to different causes:

Symptom Likely causes
ANC is weak in both ears Poor seal, Adaptive Audio, dirt, incorrect settings, outdated software or firmware
ANC is weak in one ear Different tip fit, blocked mesh, local contamination or a fault in that individual AirPod
You hear hissing, crackling, chirping or squealing Covered or blocked microphones, an incorrectly fitted tip, contamination or hardware damage
The ANC option is missing The AirPods are not connected, listening-mode settings or compatibility limitations, outdated software, or pairing corruption
ANC gradually became worse Worn tips, earwax, dust, blocked microphones or speaker mesh, changing fit or aging hardware

Also remember that ANC does not remove every sound. It normally performs best against steady, low-frequency noise such as an aircraft engine, air conditioner, bus or road rumble. Voices, sudden impacts, dishes, wind gusts and high-pitched sounds can remain audible even when ANC is functioning normally. Apple explains that AirPods Pro use outward-facing and inward-facing microphones to detect unwanted sound and generate anti-noise. Apple’s explanation of AirPods listening modes provides more detail.

Quick fix checklist

  1. Select Active Noise Cancellation, not Transparency, Adaptive or Off.
  2. Turn off Adaptive Audio while testing.
  3. Run the Ear Tip Fit Test or, on AirPods Pro 3, the Test Acoustic Seal.
  4. Try a different ear-tip size in either ear.
  5. Inspect and clean the tips, microphones and meshes without putting liquid into the earbuds.
  6. Install the latest available iPhone, iPad or Mac software and AirPods firmware.
  7. Reset and pair the AirPods again.
  8. Arrange service if ANC still fails in a controlled test.

1. Make sure fixed ANC is selected

With both AirPods Pro inserted and connected, open the AirPods controls on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Select Active Noise Cancellation. Do not use Transparency, Adaptive or Off for this test.

  • Mac: open the AirPods controls from System Settings.

The exact labels and paths can vary by AirPods model and operating-system version. If the ANC control cannot be enabled from Settings or Control Center, or automatic ear detection is also malfunctioning, continue to the update and reset steps rather than assuming ANC hardware has failed.

2. Turn off Adaptive Audio

Adaptive Audio deliberately changes the balance between noise cancellation and environmental sound. That variable behavior can seem like ANC is switching off, particularly when the surrounding noise changes.

  1. Connect the AirPods Pro.
  2. Open the listening-mode controls.
  3. Select fixed Active Noise Cancellation.
  4. Make sure Adaptive Audio is not selected.
  5. Test again near steady noise, such as a fan or air conditioner.

Apple currently documents Adaptive Audio for AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Max 2 when paired with compatible Apple hardware and current software. It is not available in the same way on every AirPods model.

On compatible AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 setups, an Off Listening Mode option can also disable listening-mode technology altogether. Apple lists iPhone and iPad compatibility from iOS/iPadOS 18.1 and Mac compatibility from macOS 15.1, subject to the specific model and software configuration. See Apple’s listening-mode requirements.

3. Check the ear-tip seal

A poor seal is one of the most common reasons ANC feels ineffective. The electronics may be working, but sound is leaking around the silicone tip. Left and right ears may need different sizes.

AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2

  1. Insert both AirPods Pro and connect them to an iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. Tap the Info button next to your AirPods.
  4. Tap Ear Tip Fit Test.
  5. Tap Continue, then Play.

AirPods Pro 3

  1. Wear and connect the AirPods Pro.
  2. Open Settings and tap the AirPods Pro name near the top.
  3. Tap Test Acoustic Seal.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions.

If the test fails, try a larger tip if the AirPod feels loose, or a smaller one if it is painful or feels overly compressed. Reinsert each AirPod so the tip sits fully in the ear canal, and confirm that every tip is attached correctly.

Apple lists these tip sizes:

  • AirPods Pro 1: S, M and L
  • AirPods Pro 2: XS, S, M and L
  • AirPods Pro 3: XXS, XS, S, M and L

AirPods Pro tips are model-specific, so do not assume tips from one generation will fit another. See Apple’s ear-tip compatibility instructions.

4. Inspect and clean the AirPods safely

ANC relies on microphones that detect sound outside and inside the ear. Earwax, skin oil, dust or makeup can obstruct those microphones or the speaker mesh. A blocked external microphone can also cause temporary high-pitched squeals, chirps or feedback.

Inspect the external microphone openings, inward-facing microphone area, speaker mesh, ear-tip opening and any bottom microphone area identified for your model. If ANC previously worked well but gradually lost bass or began allowing more background sound through, contamination is a plausible explanation.

Safe cleaning steps

  • Remove the ear tips.
  • Wipe the tips with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Let the tips dry completely before reinstalling them.
  • Clean the charging case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
  • If needed, slightly dampen the cloth with isopropyl alcohol when cleaning the case—not the AirPods’ openings.

Do not pour or spray liquid into the earbuds or charging ports. Avoid compressed air, soaking, household solvents, abrasive materials, needles, pins and sharp tools. Do not aggressively brush directly against a microphone or speaker mesh. Apple’s cleaning guidance explains the current precautions.

If one AirPod squeals or feeds back, stop increasing the volume and inspect that side. Persistent artifacts after careful cleaning are a reason to seek service.

5. Update your Apple device and AirPods firmware

Apple’s ANC troubleshooting guidance says to install the latest available software on the connected iPhone, iPad or Mac and ensure the AirPods Pro have the latest firmware.

  • Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
  • Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
  • Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears

AirPods firmware generally updates automatically when the earbuds are in their charging case, near a paired Apple device connected to Wi-Fi, and charging or sufficiently charged. Firmware version numbers change, so check Apple’s current support information rather than relying on an old number found online.

AirPods can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but some listening-mode controls and features may be limited. For the fullest feature set, test with a compatible Apple device running current software. Apple’s AirPods Pro specifications list current system requirements.

6. Reset and reconnect the AirPods

Resetting can resolve pairing or settings corruption. It cannot repair a damaged microphone, speaker mesh, battery or ANC circuit.

Use Apple’s model-specific reset instructions rather than applying one universal button sequence to every AirPods Pro generation. In general, place both earbuds in the case, close the lid briefly, reopen it, and use the case’s reset or pairing control until the status light indicates reset mode. The exact control and light sequence depends on the model.

If the AirPods do not reconnect automatically, remove them from the connected device’s Bluetooth settings and pair them again. Then select fixed ANC, turn off Adaptive Audio and repeat the seal test. Apple’s ANC troubleshooting page links to the relevant reset procedure.

7. Test each AirPod separately

Testing one side at a time helps distinguish a general settings or fit problem from an individual-earbud fault. Compare both AirPods together, the left alone and the right alone in the same steady-noise environment. If practical, try the same earbud in either ear.

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd generation) with MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C) (Renewed)
  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • Both sides are weak: fit, settings, contamination, software or environmental expectations are more likely.
  • Only one side is weak: check that tip, microphone and mesh first; a local hardware fault becomes more plausible if the problem follows the earbud.
  • ANC works only with both inserted: check automatic ear detection and relevant accessibility settings before concluding that the ANC system is defective.
  • One side squeals or feeds back: stop using that side until it has been inspected and cleaned; persistent noise points toward service.

This is diagnostic reasoning, not a definitive hardware diagnosis. A case can charge an AirPod normally while that earbud’s microphones or ANC circuitry is defective.

When ANC is probably a hardware problem

Arrange Apple or Apple Authorized Service Provider support when:

  • ANC remains weak after a successful seal test, cleaning, updates and reset.
  • The fault consistently affects one earbud.
  • There is persistent crackling, chirping, squealing or feedback.
  • The problem began after a drop, liquid exposure or visible damage.
  • An AirPod repeatedly disconnects.
  • ANC controls fail across multiple compatible Apple devices.
  • The result is unchanged with different tip sizes and clean microphones.

Apple says AirPods may need service if ANC remains faulty after resetting. Its AirPods service page says technicians inspect the product and provide a personalized estimate. Out-of-warranty pricing can vary by model, country or region, tax, shipping and service provider.

Repair, replacement tips or new AirPods?

Choose the least expensive remedy that matches the symptom:

  • Replacement ear tips: the best first purchase when tips are worn, damaged or failing the seal test. They will not fix damaged electronics or microphones. Apple says tips are designed for their specific AirPods Pro model; verify the model and package size before buying.
  • Apple service: sensible for a single failed earbud, persistent artifacts, physical damage or an in-warranty problem.
  • AppleCare: check your plan and country-specific terms. Coverage can include accidental-damage service or battery service, but fees and benefits vary.
  • New AirPods: consider replacement when the pair is old, out of warranty, has degraded batteries and ANC trouble, or the service estimate approaches the cost of a new pair.

Apple states that its one-year Limited Warranty covers manufacturing issues, subject to regional consumer-law rights, but not normal battery wear or accidental damage. Apple service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remainder of the warranty, whichever is longer.

Buying a different ANC platform, such as Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen), may make sense for someone dissatisfied with AirPods Pro fit or using Android. Bose emphasizes its own fit combinations and CustomTune system. The trade-off is reduced Apple ecosystem integration, including features such as automatic switching and Siri integration. Compare the current price and coverage before switching; promotional prices change.

Bottom line

Start with fixed ANC and a properly fitted tip, not a replacement purchase. Disable Adaptive Audio, run the model-appropriate seal test, clean the microphones and meshes carefully, update the software and firmware, then reset and re-pair. If ANC still fails in the same ear or produces persistent feedback across compatible devices, stop troubleshooting and request a service estimate.
