Activity App Not Working? Fix Apple Watch Activity Rings and Fitness Sync

Find out whether Apple Watch activity is missing from Health or just not reaching Fitness, then fix connection, permissions, ring behavior, calibration, or migration problems.

If your Apple Watch Activity rings are frozen, first check whether new steps or heart-rate readings appear in the iPhone Health app. If Health has no new data, investigate watch tracking, permissions, fit, and connection. If Health has fresh data but Activity or Fitness does not, focus on syncing, data sources, or ring rules. Apple calls the watch app Activity and the iPhone summary app Fitness; the steps below cover both.

Identify what is not working

Symptom Where to investigate first
Rings are frozen on both Watch and iPhone Watch tracking, permissions, software, or Health data
Watch rings update but iPhone Fitness does not Watch–iPhone connection or sync
Steps appear in Health but rings do not move Delayed sync, data-source priority, Activity calculations, or ring-specific rules
Exercise ring does not increase as expected Whether the activity met the Exercise ring’s requirements
Stand ring is missing or incorrect Whether the watch was worn, fit, Wrist Detection, and motion tracking
Calories or distance look wrong Personal details, fit, GPS conditions, or calibration
Data disappeared after changing iPhones Pairing, backup, iCloud Health settings, or migration
Friends’ activity is stale Internet access, Apple Account, invitations, or Activity Sharing setup
Activity or Workout is missing App deletion, setup, compatibility, or software

Apple defines Move as active calories, Exercise as qualifying exercise minutes, and Stand as an hour in which you stood and moved for at least one minute. A workout can be saved without advancing every ring by the amount of time you expect. Apple’s Activity ring guide explains the measurements.

Try the low-risk connection and restart checks

  1. Bring the iPhone and Apple Watch close together. Make sure Airplane Mode is off on both. On iPhone, confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled. Check that both devices have adequate battery and that the watch is unlocked and being worn for your test.
  2. Look at the watch’s connection indicator. A green iPhone icon indicates a connection; a red iPhone icon or red X indicates a connection problem. Apple’s Apple Watch connection guidance recommends checking proximity, Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth before restarting.
  3. Restart the iPhone using its normal power-off control, then turn it back on. Restart the watch normally by holding the side button until the power control appears, powering it off, then turning it back on with the side button.
  4. Use a force restart only if the watch is frozen or unresponsive: hold the side button and Digital Crown together until the Apple logo appears. Do not force-restart during an update.
  5. With both devices near each other, open Activity on the watch, then Fitness and Health on the iPhone. Take a short walk or start a brief workout and check whether new data appears.

A restart can clear a temporary connection or display issue; it will not enable a disabled permission or correct calibration. If the watch remains disconnected after these checks, proceed through Apple’s connection guidance before considering re-pairing.

Check whether Health is receiving new data

On iPhone, open Health and inspect recent Steps and, if available, heart-rate entries. This separates a recording problem from a Fitness or Activity display/sync problem.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • No new Health data: check Fitness Tracking, whether the watch is worn and unlocked, its fit and skin contact, Wrist Detection, battery, connection, and software. If multiple Apple apps also show no sensor data, a hardware or sensor problem becomes more plausible.
  • Health has new data but rings are frozen: check connection and synchronization, ring-specific rules, and which source Health is using. A delayed Fitness refresh or a third-party app’s permissions may also be involved.

Do not delete Health records as a troubleshooting shortcut. HealthKit is Apple’s central repository for health and fitness information, and apps need permission to read or write its data; changing or removing records can be difficult to reverse. See Apple’s HealthKit privacy and security overview.

Turn on Fitness Tracking and review permissions

Menu names can vary by software version. On current iPhone software, open Health > profile picture > Devices > Apple Watch and check Fitness Tracking and relevant data permissions. Apple specifically recommends turning on Fitness Tracking when Health is not tracking steps or other information. Its Health data guidance also describes compatible apps and Health permissions.

For a third-party workout or health app, go to Health > profile picture > Apps, select the app, and review the categories it may read or write. Read access does not mean the app is permitted to write workout or activity data. If the app records a workout but has no permission to share the relevant data with Health, it may not contribute as expected to Fitness.

Check personal details and watch fit

In the iPhone Watch app, check the health details associated with your profile, including date of birth, height, weight, and other available information. Apple says personal information is used for calorie calculations, so outdated details can affect estimates. Also confirm the selected wrist is correct and that the watch sits snugly enough for reliable sensor contact without being uncomfortable. Apple’s calibration and accuracy guidance explains these accuracy factors.

Correcting details may improve future estimates; it does not guarantee that missed historical ring credit will be restored.

Recalibrate when distance, pace, or calorie estimates are inaccurate

Calibration is for inaccurate measurements, not a general remedy for a broken connection or frozen sync. Apple’s procedure uses an outdoor walk or run with location services and Motion Calibration & Distance enabled:

  1. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and turn Location Services on.
  2. Open System Services and enable Motion Calibration & Distance.
  3. Wear the watch outdoors in a relatively flat, open area with good GPS reception. Open Workout on the watch and choose Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
  4. Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes. Apple says this time can be accumulated across multiple workouts; repeat at other speeds if you want calibration for different walking or running paces.

For a fresh start, open the iPhone Watch app and tap My Watch > Privacy > Reset Fitness Calibration Data. This resets calibration data, not Activity history; outdoor workouts are needed afterward to build calibration again. Apple notes that Apple Watch Ultra and later, Series 8 and later, and Apple Watch SE 2 and later use built-in watch GPS even when the iPhone is nearby; older models may use iPhone GPS when available. Details are in Apple’s calibration instructions.

Understand what counts toward each ring

  • Move: active calories, not simply time spent moving.
  • Exercise: qualifying exercise minutes; elapsed workout duration is not necessarily the same as credited Exercise time.
  • Stand: standing and moving for at least one minute in an hour. Wearing the watch and allowing it to detect motion matter.

If a workout appears in Fitness or Health but one ring does not advance as expected, that may be expected behavior rather than a failure to record. Compatible third-party workout apps can contribute to the Move ring when they are authorized to share data with Health. Apple describes this in its guide to adding workouts from compatible apps.

Check third-party workout apps and data sources

If the problem began after installing or updating a fitness, sleep, heart-rate, or workout app, test the setup before changing watch calibration:

  1. Check the app’s Health permissions as described above, and confirm that the app supports Apple Health/Fitness integration.
  2. End any active or paused workout session on the watch or in the app.
  3. In Health, inspect the relevant data type’s data sources and access. If several devices or apps write the same type, source priority can affect which record Health uses.
  4. Temporarily disable or remove a recently added app if needed to isolate the cause. This can interrupt its integrations or history; contact its developer if its own records are incomplete.

Do not assume a third-party app is responsible without testing. A source-priority change can alter which device’s readings appear in Health.

Fix Activity Sharing separately

If your own rings work but a friend’s updates do not, focus on sharing rather than tracking calibration. Check that the iPhone has internet access, you are signed in to your Apple Account, the invitation was accepted, and the friend still uses an Apple Watch. If multiple watches are paired, Apple says all may need to be updated before the Sharing tab appears. Apple also notes that extended internet disconnection or signing out can leave friend updates missing, and supports up to 40 sharing friends. Follow the current Activity Sharing troubleshooting steps.

Recover activity after switching to a new iPhone

Health and Activity migration depends on pairing, backups, and iCloud settings. Apple recommends updating the old iPhone and watch before transfer, keeping devices charged, ensuring Health is enabled in iCloud, and backing up the old iPhone. Finish setup in the Watch app; if pairing is incomplete, open Watch > My Watch > All Watches and tap Finish Pairing if shown.

Health and Activity data stored in iCloud may take time to appear; Apple says migration can take days in some cases. Activity Sharing data is not stored in iCloud in the same way as personal Health and Activity data. Apple warns that without the old device or an available backup, Health and Activity content may not be recoverable. Consult Apple’s transfer guidance and guidance for missing Health and Activity data.

Update iPhone and Apple Watch

Install the latest public software available for both devices: on iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update; for the watch, open Watch > My Watch > General > Software Update. Updating only one device can leave compatibility or pairing issues unresolved. Do not install beta software as a fix; beta releases can introduce problems absent from public releases.

Compatibility depends on model and feature. Apple’s current setup guide describes iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later and Apple Watch SE, Series 6, or Apple Watch Ultra models with watchOS 26 or later for its current setup flow; check Apple’s compatibility and setup guide for your specific devices.

Unpair and pair again only after protecting your data

Re-pairing can help when the Watch–iPhone relationship remains broken, but it takes time and may leave recent changes out if they were not backed up. Before unpairing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Make a current iPhone backup and confirm Health is syncing to iCloud if you rely on iCloud.
  • Know the Apple Account password and keep both devices charged.
  • Understand that watch activity, workouts, or settings changed after the latest backup may not be included.

Apple recommends unpairing and pairing again for persistent connection problems, but its migration guidance warns about changes made after the last backup. Follow Apple’s connection steps and data recovery guidance. Avoid Erase All Content and Settings as an early troubleshooting step.

When to contact Apple

  • No new motion, heart-rate, or step data appears in Health after tracking, permissions, and connection checks.
  • The watch repeatedly disconnects, or sensors fail across multiple Apple apps.
  • The issue persists after restarting, updating both devices, reviewing permissions, and recalibrating when measurements—not syncing—are inaccurate.
  • The watch suffered impact or water damage, or you suspect a sensor or charging fault.
  • Health data is missing after migration and there is no usable backup.

Contact Apple Watch Support for device-specific diagnostics. Repair eligibility and cost depend on country, model, warranty, and damage; check those details with Apple before deciding whether hardware replacement is warranted.
