AirPods 4 has an open-ear fit without silicone tips; AirPods Pro 2 uses silicone tips to seal the ear canal. Choose based on fit preference, desired noise control, case features, and whether you want access to Pro 2’s hearing features—not on an assumed universal comfort or sound-quality winner.
If you want noise control in an open-ear design, compare AirPods 4 with ANC specifically: standard AirPods 4 does not have ANC. Pro 2 is the tip-based option and supports Apple’s Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features, subject to compatibility and availability requirements.

Which differences matter most?
Fit: open-ear or silicone tips?
AirPods 4 does not use silicone ear tips and leaves the ear canal unsealed. AirPods Pro 2 includes four tip sizes—XS, S, M, and L—and seals the ear canal. That physical difference affects how much outside sound reaches you and how the earbuds sit, but comfort and stability depend on your ears and personal preference.

Noise control: standard AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, or Pro 2?
Standard AirPods 4 does not include ANC or Apple’s noise-control modes. AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2 both list ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, and Conversation Awareness. Apple describes AirPods 4 with ANC as bringing ANC to an open-ear design and calls Pro 2’s feature “Pro-level Active Noise Cancellation”; those are Apple’s product descriptions, not independent comparative test results.
The open-ear design of AirPods 4 and the sealed, tip-based fit of Pro 2 are the central physical distinction. This research does not establish a measured ANC winner across real-world conditions, so consider the fit and isolation you want rather than treating a manufacturer label as a guarantee.

Hearing features and eligibility
Apple lists Hearing Test and Hearing Aid support for AirPods Pro 2, not AirPods 4. These features require compatible hardware and software and may vary by region and language. Apple says Hearing Aid is intended for people aged 18 or older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. It is not a substitute for clinical advice. Check Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 technical specifications for current compatibility details.
Battery: compare the stated listening conditions
Apple estimates up to five hours per charge and up to 30 hours with the case for AirPods 4. For AirPods 4 with ANC, Apple estimates up to four hours per charge and 20 hours with the case when ANC is enabled, or up to five hours per charge and 30 hours with the case when noise control is off. Apple’s comparison page gives Pro 2 estimates of up to six hours per charge and 30 hours with the case with ANC off. These are maximum estimates, not guarantees; settings, environment, and usage affect battery life.

Charging cases and everyday features
The standard AirPods 4 case charges by USB-C. The AirPods 4 with ANC case also supports Qi-certified wireless charging and an Apple Watch charger, and includes a speaker for Find My. The Pro 2 USB-C case supports USB-C, Qi, MagSafe, and Apple Watch charging; it also has a Find My speaker and an integrated lanyard loop. Apple lists the USB-C charging cable as sold separately for the AirPods 4 configurations covered by its specifications.
Durability and non-Apple devices
Apple lists IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and Pro 2. Apple bases these ratings on controlled laboratory testing and notes that resistance can diminish with wear. IP54 does not mean waterproof; these products are not for swimming or submersion.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
All three configurations list Bluetooth 5.3. AirPods can work as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple-specific functionality may be limited. Consider how much you rely on Apple features before choosing based on ecosystem benefits.
