It still costs $549 in the U.S., weighs about 386.2 g, and is rated for up to 20 hours of battery life.
The better value depends on the discount. The 2024 USB-C AirPods Max is worth considering at roughly $150 less than Max 2 because it retains the core design, ANC, Spatial Audio, and now supports wired USB-C lossless audio. The original Lightning model is mainly a used or refurbished purchase.
AirPods Max at a glance
| Model | Year | Chip and port | Key distinction | Buying advice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original AirPods Max | 2020 | H1, Lightning | First-generation design and wireless ANC | Used or refurbished only, at a steep discount |
| USB-C AirPods Max | 2024 | H1, USB-C | New colors and later wired lossless support | Strong value when substantially cheaper |
| AirPods Max 2 | 2026 | H2, USB-C | Improved ANC, Adaptive Audio, and newer Apple features | Best new purchase, especially around $449 |
AirPods Max are premium over-ear wireless headphones with active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive EQ, automatic Apple-device switching, Find My support, Digital Crown controls, and a Smart Case. Their biggest advantage is not universal Bluetooth performance; it is how naturally they work within Apple’s ecosystem.
On Android, Windows, game consoles, and other non-Apple hardware, basic Bluetooth listening may work, but automatic switching, Spatial Audio, Siri integration, and other Apple-specific capabilities can be reduced or unavailable. Check the exact device and feature combination before buying.

What changed with AirPods Max 2?
AirPods Max 2, introduced in March 2026, is an evolutionary upgrade rather than a major redesign. It keeps the aluminum ear cups, stainless-steel telescoping arms, mesh canopy, magnetic cushions, Smart Case, 20-hour battery rating, and $549 U.S. list price.
The principal changes are internal. Max 2 uses an Apple H2 chip in each ear cup, Bluetooth 5.3, and a revised feature set including:
- Improved active noise cancellation. Apple claims it is up to 1.5 times more effective than the previous generation; that multiplier should be treated as Apple’s claim, not a universal independent measurement.
- Adaptive Audio, which dynamically balances noise control and environmental awareness.
- Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, and Voice Isolation.
- Additional Siri-related capabilities.
- Live Translation on compatible Apple hardware, software, languages, and regions.
- USB-C wired lossless and ultra-low-latency audio.
Live Translation is not simply a feature unlocked by owning the headphones. Apple says the workflow requires AirPods Max 2, current firmware, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, iOS 26.4 or later, and supported languages and regions. Availability can vary by device, language, and location.
AirPods Max history
2020: the original model
Apple introduced AirPods Max in December 2020 as its first over-ear AirPods product, priced at $549 in the United States. The headphones used an H1 chip in each ear cup, a Lightning charging port, active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, Spatial Audio, a Digital Crown, and a rated battery life of up to 20 hours with ANC enabled.
The design used aluminum ear cups, stainless-steel arms, a breathable mesh canopy, and replaceable magnetic ear cushions. Its unusual Smart Case places the headphones in a low-power state but is not a full rigid travel case.
2024: USB-C refresh
In September 2024, Apple replaced Lightning with USB-C and introduced midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange finishes. This was principally a port and color refresh: it did not introduce a new chip or major acoustic redesign. Apple later added wired lossless and low-latency audio through firmware and software support.

2025: wired lossless audio arrives
Apple announced lossless audio and ultra-low-latency audio for USB-C AirPods Max in March 2025. The feature supports 24-bit/48 kHz lossless playback over a compatible USB-C-to-USB-C connection. It is a wired feature, not Bluetooth lossless audio.
Apple also introduced a USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio cable priced at $39 in the United States. That cable is useful with airplanes, older audio sources, cars, and other analog equipment, but it should not be confused with the native USB-C digital lossless path.

See Apple’s AirPods Max 2 specifications for the current technical details. Apple’s published specifications do not establish a standard IP water- or dust-resistance rating, so do not treat Max as waterproof, sweatproof, or gym-ready.
2024 USB-C AirPods Max
The 2024 model retains H1 chips, the original design, Bluetooth 5.0, approximately 384.8 g weight, and up to 20 hours of battery life with ANC enabled. After the relevant firmware and software support, it can play 24-bit/48 kHz lossless audio and provide ultra-low latency over USB-C.
The original 2020 version is broadly similar but uses Lightning and should not be described as supporting the later USB-C lossless implementation.
Review: what AirPods Max does well
Apple-device integration
For people who regularly move between an iPhone, iPad, and Mac, automatic pairing, device switching, Find My, Spatial Audio, Siri, and Apple accessibility features are the central reason to choose AirPods Max. The convenience is substantial, but it should not be mistaken for proof that Max sounds better than every Sony, Bose, or Sennheiser competitor.

Noise cancellation and sound
Max 2 improves on the previous generation’s noise cancellation, with Apple claiming up to a 1.5-times improvement. Independent coverage also describes a meaningful improvement, but results vary by test method, frequency, fit, and environment. The USB-C models add a useful wired option for producers, editors, musicians, gamers, and listeners with compatible lossless sources.
For ordinary Bluetooth listening, however, a USB-C port does not automatically make playback lossless. The source, cable, content, firmware, and connection method all matter.
Premium construction and replaceable cushions
The aluminum-and-steel construction feels more substantial than many plastic ANC headphones, and the magnetic ear cushions can be removed and replaced. That premium construction is also responsible for one of the product’s most important drawbacks: weight.
What is not ideal
High weight
At approximately 386 g, Max 2 is heavy compared with many competing ANC headphones. Some users may experience neck fatigue, headband pressure, or reduced comfort during long sessions. Comfort is subjective and depends on head shape, glasses, hair, and session length, so the objective conclusion is that buyers sensitive to weight should try them before committing.

Battery and case
Up to 20 hours with ANC enabled is adequate but not class-leading. Actual battery life varies with volume, listening modes, wireless conditions, and device use.
The Smart Case is minimal. It helps put the headphones into a low-power state, but it does not provide the same protection as a conventional rigid travel case. Frequent travelers may want a compatible third-party hard case.

Platform limitations and no published water rating
Android and Windows users can use basic Bluetooth functions, but they do not receive the full Apple experience. Max is also a poor choice for exercise, heavy sweating, or regular rain because Apple’s published specifications do not provide an IP water-resistance rating.
AirPods Max 2 versus the 2024 USB-C model
| Question | AirPods Max 2 | 2024 USB-C model |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | H2 | H1 |
| Improved ANC | Yes; Apple claims up to 1.5× improvement | Previous-generation ANC |

Buy Max 2 when the price gap is modest, you want Adaptive Audio or Live Translation, or you plan to keep the headphones for several years. Buy the 2024 USB-C model when it is about $100–$150 cheaper and your priorities are Apple integration, ANC, sound, and wired USB-C audio. Buy the Lightning version only used or refurbished, with a return window and careful checks of battery condition, port, and physical wear.
Tips and how-tos
Pair with an iPhone or iPad
- Update the iPhone or iPad to a supported current operating system.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Remove AirPods Max from the Smart Case and hold them near the device.
- Follow the onscreen pairing prompt. If it does not appear, open Settings → Bluetooth and select AirPods Max.
Max 2 features may additionally depend on the device, operating system, firmware, language, and region.
Change listening modes
Press the listening-mode button to move between ANC and Transparency. On compatible Max 2 setups, Adaptive Audio dynamically combines noise control and environmental awareness. You can also change modes through Control Center or the AirPods settings when the headphones are connected.
Use the Digital Crown
- Turn it to adjust volume.
- Press once to play or pause.
- Press once during a call to answer, mute, or unmute.
- Press twice to skip forward or end a call, depending on context.
- Press three times to skip back.
- Press and hold to invoke Siri.
Set up USB-C lossless audio
- Use a USB-C AirPods Max model; the Lightning model does not provide this native USB-C workflow.
- Update the headphones and source device to supported firmware and software.
- Connect the headphones directly to a compatible source with a USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
- Play compatible lossless content.
Do not assume every USB-C cable or USB-C-to-3.5 mm connection provides the same digital path. The 3.5 mm cable is for analog equipment; USB-C-to-USB-C is the relevant connection for the announced digital lossless mode.
Firmware troubleshooting
AirPods firmware updates are generally delivered automatically while the headphones are charging and within Bluetooth range of a connected Apple device. Users normally cannot manually choose a firmware version. If a feature is missing, charge the headphones, place them near a connected and updated iPhone, iPad, or Mac, leave them connected for a while, and recheck the firmware in the device’s Bluetooth or AirPods settings. Restart or reset the headphones if necessary. Apple’s current firmware support page has the latest process and menu labels.

Rumors and future outlook
AirPods Max 2 has already launched in 2026, so older reports predicting an H2 model, improved ANC, Adaptive Audio, or Live Translation now belong to the product’s history rather than a future-rumor section. There is no reliable reason in the supplied evidence to promise a near-term lighter redesign, larger battery, new Smart Case, or future H1 feature support. Treat any later speculation as dated and attributed rather than as a buying reason.
Final verdict
AirPods Max 2 is the best AirPods Max for Apple users buying new, provided they accept its weight and ordinary rather than class-leading battery life. At $449 or below, it is a compelling premium Apple accessory. The 2024 USB-C model is the smarter bargain when it is at least $100–$150 cheaper and H2-only features do not matter. Choose Sony, Bose, or Sennheiser instead if you primarily use Android or Windows, need a lighter or longer-lasting headset, want a hard travel case, or plan to exercise in the headphones.
