AirPods Pro 2 firmware 7B19 enabled Apple’s Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection features when paired with an iPhone running iOS 18.1 or later or an iPad running iPadOS 18.1 or later. The features are subject to device, age, intended-use, and regional restrictions, and 7B19 is a feature-enabling version—not a standalone hearing product.
What AirPods Pro 2 firmware 7B19 changed
Apple’s release notes say that 7B19, used with compatible iPhone or iPad software, brings three hearing features to AirPods Pro 2. Apple’s current guide continues to identify AirPods Pro 2 as the supported model. Installing firmware alone is not sufficient: compatible software and regional availability also matter.

Apple’s current guidance says the features are not available in every country or region. Hearing Test and Hearing Aid are also subject to regulatory authorization. Check Apple’s current availability information for your location rather than assuming that the 2024 launch geography still describes access.
Firmware and device requirements
- Compatible earbuds: AirPods Pro 2.
- Firmware: version 7B19 or later, as required in Apple’s feature documentation.
- Compatible Apple device: an iPhone running iOS 18.1 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 18.1 or later.
- Supported location: availability varies by country or region, and some features require regulatory authorization.
- Eligible use: Hearing Test is intended for adults 18 and older; Hearing Aid is intended for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss.
Do not assume that firmware 7B19 alone makes the features available. Confirm the AirPods model, companion-device software, and availability for your region.

Hearing Test: an at-home assessment
Apple describes Hearing Test as a scientifically validated, self-administered assessment intended for people 18 and older. The process takes about five minutes and should be completed in a quiet room. Results show a hearing-loss classification and recommend next steps; users can export a PDF audiogram to share with a hearing healthcare professional.
Apple’s October 2024 white paper reports a median absolute deviation of 1.75 dB HL for the overall eight-frequency pure-tone average across 339 paired ears in its secondary endpoint analysis. This is a result reported by Apple, not independent testing by this publication.
How to test your hearing at home
- Make sure the AirPods Pro 2 and connected Apple device meet Apple’s requirements and the feature is available in your region.
- Move to a quiet room and follow the instructions on the device.
- Wear the AirPods as instructed, with a fit suitable for completing the test.
- Review the classification and recommended next steps; export the PDF audiogram if you want to share it with a hearing professional.
The assessment is useful information, but it should not be treated as a universal substitute for professional evaluation.

Hearing Aid and Media Assist
Apple intends Hearing Aid for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Users can personalize it using results from the AirPods Hearing Test or an audiogram from a hearing healthcare professional. Apple says settings include amplification, left-right balance, and tone, and are stored on the AirPods.
Keep the two sound functions distinct: Hearing Aid amplifies environmental sound in Transparency mode. Media Assist applies hearing-test-based adjustments to music, video, and calls across noise-control modes. Availability depends on location and regulatory authorization.
Hearing Protection: important limits
Apple says Hearing Protection helps minimize exposure to loud environmental noise across listening modes. It is not universal hearing protection. Apple’s October 2024 data sheet says it is unsuitable for extremely loud impulse sounds—including gunfire, fireworks, or jackhammers—and sustained sounds above 110 dBA. Protection may also be disabled under certain conditions, including when the AirPods have no battery charge or certain settings are selected.

Apple’s data sheet identified availability in the United States and Canada at that time. Do not assume those are the only current supported locations; check Apple’s current availability information. Apple also says the feature is not suitable for all workplaces. If you are considering it for work, check with your employer and do not treat it as a substitute for required workplace protection.

- Keep the case and earbuds within Bluetooth range of a connected Apple device.
- Allow time for the update to install, then check the firmware version in the AirPods information screen on the Apple device.
Use Apple’s current support instructions for the precise steps on your operating-system version. If you cannot update using a nearby Apple device, Apple says an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider can arrange an update.
