The long-awaited AirPods Pro 3 feature is Live Translation: a conversation tool that translates nearby speech into your language through compatible AirPods. It is now an available Apple feature, but AirPods Pro 3 are not required. Apple also supports AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Max 2, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later.
What Live Translation does
Live Translation uses the iPhone to process speech and deliver a translation through compatible AirPods. In a one-sided setup, you hear the other person’s words translated into your selected language. The Translate app can also show a transcript or play the translated response through the iPhone speaker, so the other person does not need AirPods.
If both people have compatible AirPods and each starts Live Translation, both can hear translated versions of the conversation in their own earbuds. Apple says downloaded language models process the conversation on the iPhone and that conversation data remains there; that describes Apple’s stated processing model, not an independent privacy audit. Which devices and languages work?
AirPods Pro 3 support the feature, but Apple’s current compatibility list also includes these models:

You also need an iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on, the Translate app installed and current AirPods firmware. A standard iPhone 15 is not included in Apple’s stated requirement. AirPods Pro 3 on their own are not enough.
Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 product page lists these language variants for Live Translation: Mandarin Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), English (UK and US), French (France), German (Germany), Italian (Italy), Japanese (Japan), Korean (South Korea), Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (Spain). That list does not establish support for every regional variant, and availability can vary by language and region. Check Apple’s current listings for your destination and languages before relying on the feature. Apple’s AirPods Pro 3 page lists the supported variants.

How to set up and start a translation
Prepare your iPhone and AirPods
- Pair a compatible AirPods model with an iPhone 15 Pro or later, and update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence, install Apple’s Translate app and make sure the AirPods have the latest firmware.
- Put the AirPods in your ears and connect them to the iPhone.
- Open Settings, tap the name of your connected AirPods, then under Translation tap Languages.
- Download the language the other person will speak and the language you want to hear.
Start and use Live Translation
- Open the Translate app and tap Live.
- Select the speaker’s language and the language you want the AirPods to translate into.
- Tap Start Translation. You can also start it by pressing and holding both AirPods stems at once, using an iPhone Action Button configured for Translate, or saying, “Siri, start Live Translation.” Apple also supports Live Translation during Phone and FaceTime calls.
- Listen through your AirPods as the other person speaks. Use the Live tab in Translate to show a transcript or play the translated response through the iPhone speaker.
- In a noisy setting, move the iPhone closer to the person speaking; Apple says its microphones can supplement the AirPods microphones.
- To stop, tap the X in the Translate app.
Apple’s Translate app is also available as an iPhone-based option if you do not have compatible AirPods.
Where it can help—and where it can fail
Live Translation is best treated as a convenience for casual, low-stakes exchanges: asking for directions, ordering food, shopping or handling basic hotel and transport questions. It can make a conversation easier to follow without requiring both people to share a language or own compatible earbuds.

“Live” is Apple’s feature name, not a promise of instant, flawless simultaneous interpretation. Speech has to be recognized and processed before a translation is played or displayed. Pauses and errors can occur, particularly with accents, background noise, fast speech, overlapping speakers, names, numbers or technical terms. Apple warns that generative-model output may be inaccurate, unexpected or offensive. Confirm important details in writing or through another reliable method; do not depend on the feature for medical instructions, legal matters, emergencies or safety-critical information.

Not for this feature alone if you already own AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4 with ANC: Apple lists both as compatible, subject to the iPhone, software, firmware, language and regional requirements above. If you have no compatible AirPods, you can also try the Translate app on iPhone before buying hardware.

Apple lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249 on its US store. The product page highlights other reasons to choose them, including heart-rate sensing, hearing-health features, improved noise cancellation, an IP57 rating and up to eight hours of listening with ANC enabled. Those are product claims and features, not a guarantee that Pro 3 will translate more accurately than other supported models. Choose them for the broader hardware package and fit, not because Live Translation is exclusive to them.
