The 2022 Alpina Alpiner Extreme Automatic is a 41 mm stainless-steel sports watch with 200 m water resistance, an integrated rubber strap and an AL-525 automatic movement based on the Sellita SW200-1. Time+Tide’s launch-era review gives its angular case and distinctive dial a positive assessment; its $1,695 USD price was the figure reported for the November 2022 launch, not a current quote.
Which Alpiner Extreme Automatic is this?
This is the 41 mm automatic covered by Ricardo Sime in a Time+Tide hands-on review published 30 September 2022. Alpina had reimagined an Alpiner Extreme design first released nearly 20 years earlier. The family later gained other configurations, including 39 mm options, a titanium version, a California dial and a solar model, so specifications for those releases should not be applied to this watch.
The figures and observations below are from Time+Tide’s account of the 2022 model, rather than current manufacturer data. Time+Tide’s 2022 review and its Alpiner Extreme archive help distinguish this launch configuration from later family releases.

How does the design and fit come across?
Sime describes the case as sharper and more angular than the earlier design. Polished trim contrasts with brushed upper surfaces on the lugs and bezel. At 49.5 mm lug-to-lug, the watch spans farther across the wrist than its 41 mm diameter alone suggests; that measurement is useful to check against a watch that already fits you.

#1 Best Overall
- Harking back to its roots, this Alpiner Extreme Automatic features a radiant glacier-hued dial that strikes the perfect balance between blue and light grey, evoking the spirit of the mountains. Housed in a compact, cushion-shaped 39x40.5mm steel case, the timepiece exudes subtle and discreetly sporty elegance.
- Its beating heart is the self-winding AL-525 caliber boasting a 38-hour power reserve. Decorated with the triangular Alpine summit pattern, the dial displays the date at 3 o'clock and sports three hands.
- Like the hour markers, the hours and minutes hands come with a luminous coating to ensure optimum readability even in the dark, and the crown at 3 o'clock is fitted with a rubber grip, making it very easy to get hold of.
- Meanwhile the dial, the seconds hand counterweight, the crown and the bezel screws all feature a perfect triangle a nod to Alpinas logo symbolizing the snow-capped Alpine summits.
- Water resistant to 200M.
The dial has a repeated Alpina-logo texture, luminous hands and markers, a red triangle counterweight on the seconds hand, and a black date wheel intended to blend into the dial. The launch colors were blue, green and black, each paired with a matching rubber strap.
The strap flows into the case rather than attaching as a conventional separate band. The reviewer notes a square texture on top, a taper and pre-made eyelets. Because it is not cut to size, the available holes—not trimming—determine where it fastens. The exhibition back shows a simply finished movement, with a customized rotor as the main decorative distinction described in the review.

What does the movement offer?
Alpina’s AL-525 is described by Time+Tide as based on the Sellita SW200-1. The review lists a 38-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. These are the published specifications for this configuration; they do not establish the condition or performance of an individual watch.
Is it a good choice?
It may suit someone looking for an angular, relatively compact-diameter sports watch with substantial stated water resistance and an integrated rubber strap. The 49.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement is particularly relevant if wrist fit is a concern. The design has visible finishing contrasts and a patterned dial, while the movement presentation through the back is comparatively simple.

- The Alpiner Extreme Automatic is a 41 x 42.5mm rugged sport watch.
- At the heart of the design, a strong brushed-finish cushion case featuring a black dial with a date window at 3 o'clock and a see-through case-back.
- The integrated black rubber strap (with no joining link with the case), made of textured rubber offers as much comfort as strength and modernity.
- The rubber grip allows for ease of handling with bare hands or with gloves.
- WR to 200M.
The main trade-offs are the fixed-style integrated strap fit and the absence of a steel-bracelet option in the review. Sime’s assessment was positive, praising the case, cleaner design and price point; he also said he would like to see a steel bracelet offered. That was his preference, not evidence that such a bracelet was released.

Before buying, confirm that a listing is for the 41 mm automatic AL-525 rather than a later Alpiner Extreme variant. Compare the diameter and lug-to-lug length with a watch that fits you, check that the rubber strap’s pre-made eyelets suit your wrist, and verify the seller’s stated condition, included parts and return terms. For comparisons with other sports watches, weigh fit, water resistance and crown construction, movement and reserve, strap or bracelet, finishing, release generation and a current verified price.
