The Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage is a vintage-inspired automatic GMT for travelers who want to track home time while adjusting local time independently. Its AL-555 movement, 1970s-influenced barrel-shaped case and internal 24-hour bezel distinguish it from the newer Startimer Pilot Automatic, which is a different watch with different specifications.
What makes the Startimer Pilot Heritage distinctive?
Alpina presents the Heritage as a 1970-inspired pilot watch, pairing a barrel-shaped case with a boxed sapphire crystal. The dial includes a GMT inner scale, and a rotating 24-hour bezel sits inside the crystal. That arrangement gives the watch a layered, instrument-like look rather than the simpler layout of many three-hand pilot watches.
The official Canadian listing for reference AL-555LNS4H6B shows a blue-and-white dial, red seconds hand and mesh steel bracelet. The 2018 introduction reported four colour variations, so a listing’s photographs and exact reference matter: dial colour and bracelet or strap configuration may differ among examples. Alpina’s description of this particular reference is at Alpina Watches Canada.
How the AL-555 GMT works
The AL-555 is an automatic movement. Alpina identifies the GMT inner dial and internal rotating 24-hour bezel; independent launch coverage and a 2019 review describe the local hour hand as independently adjustable in one-hour steps. In practical use, the independently adjusted hour hand can follow the time where you are while the GMT display remains set to home time. The 24-hour scale helps distinguish day from night at home. This is more useful for travel than a setup in which changing local time requires resetting the home-time display.

Time and Watches reported that the AL-555 is derived from a Sellita movement, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a 38-hour power reserve. These are published specifications, not measurements from a test of this article. See its 2018 introduction and aBlogtoWatch’s 2019 review for the independent descriptions.
Heritage versus the newer Startimer Pilot Automatic
The name can cause confusion because Alpina also sells a newer Startimer Pilot Automatic. That newer generation is not the Heritage GMT reviewed here. Alpina’s current collection page identifies the newer model with an AL-525 movement and a 68-hour power reserve, and lists a 40 mm case for that generation. Those specifications should not be assigned to the Heritage: the retrieved Heritage information does not establish its case diameter, thickness, lug width or lug-to-lug measurement.

Likewise, the Heritage product-page extract does not state a water-resistance rating. Check the documentation for the exact reference rather than assuming a rating based on another Startimer. The newer collection information is available on Alpina’s Startimer page.
Price, availability and value
Price references for this watch depend on market and date. Time and Watches reported 2018 launch pricing of CHF 1,295, EUR 1,295 and USD 1,395. Alpina’s Canadian page displayed CA $1,995 for AL-555LNS4H6B when accessed in 2026, with the reference marked “Sold Out.” These are historical or page-specific figures, not a like-for-like current-price comparison; the Canadian page status does not establish availability elsewhere.

What to check when buying a used Pilot Heritage
- Match the reference and configuration. Confirm the exact AL-555 reference, dial, and whether the watch comes on a mesh bracelet or another strap. The four colour options reported at launch make a model name alone insufficient to identify a specific configuration.
- Check condition and included items. Inspect the case, boxed sapphire crystal, bezel operation, bracelet or strap, and the movement’s timekeeping and GMT adjustment. Ask for service records and any original papers or accessories if they matter to your purchase.
- Verify the seller’s availability and price. Stock can change, and Alpina’s Canadian listing showed the named reference as sold out when accessed in 2026. Do not treat a historical listing or a marketplace post as proof that an exact variant is currently available.
- Confirm fit and water resistance for the exact watch. The retrieved product information does not establish Heritage case dimensions or a water-resistance rating. Seek reference-specific documentation or measurements before relying on fit or using the watch around water.
A historical 2022 community sale post mentions reference AL-555N4H6 and an Amazon listing, but it does not verify current stock or that listing’s equivalence to AL-555LNS4H6B. See the original community post only as a historical reference, not a current buying option.

Who is this watch for?
The Heritage is most compelling for someone who wants an automatic travel watch with an independently adjustable local hour hand and a home-time display, and who likes its distinctly 1970s-inspired case and internal bezel. Its appeal is less straightforward if you need confirmed case dimensions, a published water-resistance figure, or current, readily verified availability before deciding. The available descriptions establish the watch’s GMT function and design, but not hands-on performance or present-day secondary-market pricing.
