AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation bring many AirPods Pro conveniences to an open-fit design, but they do not match the Pro line’s isolation or noise-canceling performance. At Apple’s listed U.S. price of $179, they make the most sense for iPhone users who want noise reduction but dislike silicone ear tips. The standard AirPods 4 cost $129; choose them if you do not need ANC or its related features.
AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC: what you get
Apple introduced two AirPods 4 models in 2024. Both share an open-fit shape and H2-based audio platform, but the ANC version adds several features and a more capable case. Prices below are Apple’s listed U.S. prices; availability and pricing can vary by region.

Apple lists the ANC model at $179 in the United States. The models share the core design and most of their audio features; ANC, listening modes, wireless charging, and the case speaker are the main reasons to pay the extra $50. Does open-fit ANC work?
Yes, but it reduces noise rather than shutting the outside world out. AirPods 4 with ANC can make environmental sound less intrusive while avoiding the plugged-up feeling of a sealed earbud. Because the open design does not seal the ear canal, more surrounding sound gets through than with AirPods Pro. Independent reviews from Macworld, Tom’s Guide, and RTINGS describe useful but less complete noise cancellation than on sealed alternatives.

That trade-off is likely to matter most on commutes, aircraft, and trains, where steady low-frequency noise and nearby voices can remain noticeable. Fit also matters: if an earbud does not sit properly, the noise-control effect and sound can suffer. Think of ANC here as a way to take the edge off ambient noise, not as a substitute for the isolation of silicone-tipped earbuds.
Fit and comfort depend on your ears
The open fit is the reason to consider AirPods 4 instead of AirPods Pro—and the main reason they may not work for you. People who find silicone tips irritating, sweaty, or claustrophobic may prefer the AirPods 4 shape. But no open-fit earbud is a safe bet for every ear: a bud that feels secure to one person may loosen or fall out for another. Macworld’s reviewer reported improved fit over AirPods 3 but still found the fit uneven between ears; RTINGS also notes the appeal of the open design for people who dislike in-ear tips.
- Worth trying: if your priority is a non-sealing fit and your previous open-fit earbuds stayed in place.
- Be cautious: if open earbuds have fallen out before, you need a secure fit for running, or you want strong isolation for travel.
- Before committing: check the seller’s return policy and test the fit promptly. Comfort claims are personal, not a guarantee.
What the “Pro features” include—and what they do not
The ANC model brings several features associated with AirPods Pro into Apple’s open-fit range. Adaptive Audio adjusts noise control to the listening environment; Transparency mode lets outside sound through; and Conversation Awareness lowers playback when you begin speaking. It also supports Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Voice Isolation, and Adaptive EQ. The standard AirPods 4 include Spatial Audio and Voice Isolation, but not the ANC model’s listening modes. Details are in Apple’s comparison.

That is feature sharing, not performance parity. AirPods 4 do not have silicone tips, a sealed fit, or the Pro line’s full hearing-health suite. Apple lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, and Hearing Protection for AirPods Pro 2 and later, not AirPods 4; AirPods 4 also lack heart-rate sensing and the Pro line’s lossless audio and ultra-low-latency USB-C audio features.

Apple also lists Live Translation for AirPods 4 with ANC, but it is not a feature provided by the earbuds alone. Apple says it requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later, is in beta, and is limited by supported languages and regions. Check Apple’s feature and compatibility details before relying on it.
Sound and call quality
Reviews describe the AirPods 4 as capable general-purpose earbuds, particularly for speech, podcasts, and calls. Macworld praised overall audio and voice clarity; Tom’s Guide found better-sounding alternatives at the price. Those are reviewer impressions rather than a universal verdict. An open fit can deliver less bass impact than a sealed earbud, and the result depends on how each bud sits in your ear. Sharing Apple’s H2 chip with the Pro line does not make the acoustic experience the same.

Voice Isolation is available on both AirPods 4 models, but some functions require compatible Apple hardware, current software, and firmware. Macworld found voices clear in recordings and calls, though not quite as strong as on the sealed Pro model. Call performance can vary with surroundings, including wind, street noise, and busy rooms; do not treat a result in one setting as a guarantee for every call. Battery life: modest on a charge, better with the case
Apple rates standard AirPods 4 for up to five hours of listening per charge, and the ANC model for up to four hours with ANC on or up to five hours with ANC off. Apple says the case can provide up to 30 hours overall, with noise control off for the ANC model; its comparison lists up to 24 hours with ANC. These are controlled estimates, not promises for every session: Apple’s figures use conditions including 50% volume and Spatial Audio off. Engadget reported about four hours for the ANC model while mixing ANC, Transparency, Spatial Audio, and regular content at higher volume; Macworld measured 4 hours and 16 minutes in its particular ANC test. Those results are context, not a guaranteed runtime. The earbuds should cover a commute or work session, but they are a weaker choice if you need six to eight uninterrupted hours without charging.

The cases and everyday durability
Both cases charge over USB-C, but only the ANC version supports Qi wireless charging and Apple Watch charging, and it adds a speaker to help locate the case through Find My. The standard case has neither feature. Apple says the USB-C cable and power adapter are not included. AirPods 4 use a touch area on the front of the case for setup rather than the familiar rear setup button, as Macworld notes in its review.
Both earbuds and cases carry an IP54 rating for dust, sweat, and water resistance. That makes them suitable for ordinary exercise involving sweat, not swimming or deliberate water exposure. Apple advises against charging a wet case and notes that resistance can decline with normal wear. Debris or earwax can also interfere with ANC, Adaptive Audio, and Transparency; follow Apple’s care guidance and its noise-control notes.
AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 with ANC?
For most iPhone users who have decided on the open-fit design, the ANC version is the more versatile buy if the $50 premium fits the budget. It adds noise-control modes for offices and transit, plus wireless charging and the case speaker. Macworld likewise considers the ANC model the more compelling option at the difference in price.

Choose the standard AirPods 4 if you mostly listen in quiet places, do not want ANC, or simply want the lower-cost way into Apple’s current AirPods design. It still includes the H2 platform, Personalized Spatial Audio, and Voice Isolation. The case’s USB-C-only charging may be enough if wireless charging and case finding are not priorities.
AirPods 4 with ANC or AirPods Pro?
Apple’s listed U.S. price for AirPods Pro 3 is $249, versus $179 for AirPods 4 with ANC. The $70 gap buys a sealed in-ear design and a different feature set, including heart-rate sensing and hearing-health functions on Pro 3. Prices can change, and discounts on Pro models may narrow the gap, so compare live prices when you shop. Apple’s comparison page details the distinctions.

Compatibility and limits outside Apple’s ecosystem
AirPods 4 can play Bluetooth audio on Android and Windows, but some features are limited outside Apple devices. Automatic switching, personalized Spatial Audio setup, firmware management, Siri-related functions, and some advanced controls are designed primarily around Apple hardware and software. If your main phone is Android, buy them for fit and basic Bluetooth use—not on the assumption that you will get the full Apple experience.
