Apple’s released AirPods Pro 3 have an infrared-light heart-rate sensor, but Apple’s specifications do not list outward-facing cameras. A camera-equipped model was reported in January 2026, but later reporting said the demonstrated Pro 3 camera prototype was no longer planned for release and Apple was working on a separate generation; Apple has not confirmed that product, its name, features, price, or launch date.
If you are deciding whether to buy, AirPods Pro 3 are the confirmed product available now. Treat the camera story as evolving, attributed reporting—not an announced upgrade or a reason to assume a camera version is coming on a particular schedule.
What is confirmed about AirPods Pro 3
Apple announced AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025, and said they would be available in stores from September 19 at a U.S. starting price of $249. Apple lists a photoplethysmography (PPG) heart-rate sensor. The company says it pulses invisible infrared light 256 times per second to measure light absorption from blood flow during workouts. That is a heart-rate sensing function, not evidence of an outward-facing camera. These are Apple’s published claims, not independent test results.

Apple’s technical specifications list the heart-rate sensor, microphones, motion and speech accelerometers, skin-detect sensor, and touch control. The camera-remote feature controls a compatible iPhone or iPad camera; it does not mean the earbuds have cameras. Feature availability depends on compatible hardware, software, region, and language. Apple says Live Translation requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and supported software.

What has been reported about camera-equipped AirPods
Tom’s Guide reported on January 21, 2026, that Apple might make a higher-end AirPods Pro model alongside AirPods Pro 3. The report attributed the camera and gesture-control idea to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and a leak from Instant Digital. Those details were rumors, not Apple specifications.
In an August 21, 2026 report, MacRumors discussed code found in a macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate and a demonstration video. It described possible functions suggested by the code and cautioned that code does not guarantee final product features. The report identified the demonstrated camera-equipped AirPods Pro 3 prototype as B790 and attributed to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman the claim that Apple no longer planned to release that model. Instead, Apple was reportedly developing a separate camera-equipped generation, B798, with a possible 2027 launch. This is secondary, attributed reporting—not an Apple announcement.

A separate Tom’s Guide report relayed Gurman’s account that Siri issues had pushed camera-equipped AI AirPods back. Reported details such as cameras or visible status lights are not confirmation of final design, privacy behavior, or timing.
What infrared means in the released model—and what it does not
In AirPods Pro 3, Apple describes infrared as part of the PPG sensor used for heart-rate measurement during workouts. That should not be confused with the rumored camera-equipped project. The official specifications reviewed do not describe outward-facing cameras in the released AirPods Pro 3.

Similarly, speculation about room mapping, gesture control, health measurements beyond Apple’s announced heart-rate feature, or Vision Pro integration should not be presented as confirmed capability. The sources reviewed do not establish that these features will appear in a camera-equipped product.
Should you buy AirPods Pro 3 now or wait?
AirPods Pro 3 are a real, released product; a camera-equipped version is not a confirmed retail option. Base your decision on the current model’s published features and your needs, rather than assuming a rumored camera model will launch.

Apple’s official launch announcement said the heart-rate sensor uses 256 infrared-light pulses per second and listed a $249 U.S. starting price at launch (Apple, 2025). Do not treat those figures as specifications or pricing for a rumored camera-equipped model.

Do AirPods Pro 3 have infrared cameras?

Are camera-equipped AirPods Pro 3 confirmed?
No. January 2026 coverage described a rumored higher-end camera-equipped model. Later reporting said the B790 camera-equipped Pro 3 prototype was no longer planned for release and that Apple was reportedly developing a separate B798 generation. Apple has not confirmed either product.
When will camera-equipped AirPods be released, and how much will they cost?
Apple has announced no release date or price for a camera-equipped model. A possible 2027 launch was reported by MacRumors, citing Mark Gurman, but it is not confirmed.
Should I buy AirPods Pro 3 now or wait for the camera version?
