Apple says its Apple Watch bands are safe to wear, but a proposed class action alleges that certain fluoroelastomer bands contain excessive PFAS, including PFHxA. Neither position settles the scientific question for every band. The lawsuit is an allegation, the public smartwatch-band research did not identify which named Apple models tested positive, and the latest court ruling addressed whether claims were adequately pleaded—not whether Apple bands are dangerous.
What happened?
Plaintiffs filed Cavalier et al. v. Apple Inc., Case No. 5:25-cv-00713-PCP, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on January 21, 2025. The proposed class action names Apple’s Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, and Ocean Band.

On January 23, Apple said: “Apple Watch bands are safe for users to wear.” Apple also said it conducts its own testing, works with independent laboratories, and often sets chemical restrictions that exceed regulatory requirements. Read Apple’s reported statement.
On March 16, 2026, the court issued a mixed ruling on Apple’s motion to dismiss. Several claims survived, while fraudulent-misrepresentation and implied-warranty claims were dismissed with permission to amend. That was a procedural ruling, not a finding that the bands contain dangerous PFAS or that Apple is liable. Read the court order.

Which Apple Watch bands are implicated?
The complaint identifies the Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, and Ocean Band. Apple’s own materials page lists all three as being made from fluoroelastomer.
That does not mean every Apple Watch band is implicated. Apple lists other constructions, including silicone, nylon, polyester, spandex, leather, FineWoven, stainless steel, titanium, and other materials. The complaint also does not establish that every example of a named band contains PFAS. See Apple’s materials and skin-sensitivity guidance.
What are PFAS and PFHxA?
PFAS is a broad group of fluorinated chemicals known for their persistence in the environment, which is why they are often called “forever chemicals.” PFHxA is one type of PFAS.

Those allegations should not be confused with proof that ordinary Apple Watch use causes illness. A meaningful safety assessment would need to distinguish between:
- whether a chemical is present;
- its measured concentration;
- how much reaches the skin;
- how much is absorbed through the skin; and
- whether that exposure causes a demonstrated health risk during normal use.
The complaint and the court’s order do not resolve all of those questions.
What did the smartwatch-band study show?
Publicly reported research found PFAS in 15 of 22 smartwatch bands tested from multiple manufacturers. However, the reported sample labels did not identify the precise manufacturer-and-model combination for each positive result. That means the study alone does not prove that a particular reader’s Apple Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, or Ocean Band tested positive.

Why is Apple phasing out PFAS if it says the bands are safe?
Apple has separately stated that it intends to phase out PFAS from its products and manufacturing processes. In its environmental materials discussion, Apple said fluoropolymers were among the PFAS materials it assessed because of their relatively high use volume. Apple’s stated position was that these materials were safe during product use, while also saying that it wanted to address PFAS more broadly across manufacturing and its supply chain.
Apple said a complete phaseout requires cataloging PFAS uses, developing alternatives that meet performance requirements, qualifying replacement materials, and avoiding substitutes that could be equally or more harmful.
That policy is not an admission that current bands are dangerous, just as Apple’s safety statement is not a published band-by-band test report showing concentrations, methods, or exposure thresholds. The two positions can coexist: a company may consider current use safe while pursuing a broader environmental and precautionary phaseout.

- fraudulent concealment or omission;
- negligent misrepresentation;
- unjust enrichment;
- California’s Unfair Competition Law; and
- equitable relief.
The court granted Apple’s motion with leave to amend as to fraudulent misrepresentation and implied-warranty claims.
The judge noted that plaintiffs alleged Apple marketed Sport Bands for prolonged use and that their testing allegations purportedly showed elevated PFHxA. The order did not independently confirm those tests, decide that PFAS is present in the bands, determine that exposure is dangerous, or impose liability. A case surviving a motion to dismiss means that certain allegations were sufficient to continue—not that the allegations were proven.
What the lawsuit does not establish
The case does not, by itself, establish that:
- every Apple Watch band contains PFAS;
- every Sport Band contains PFHxA;
- Apple knowingly sold a dangerous product;
- ordinary wear causes cancer, reproductive harm, thyroid disease, or another illness;
- a particular owner has been harmed by their band;
- Apple has issued a recall;
- a class has been certified;
- consumers are entitled to compensation; or
- replacing a band is medically necessary.
Apple’s motion-to-dismiss filings argued that plaintiffs had not connected the public smartwatch-band study to the specific products they purchased and had not adequately pleaded the relevant concentration, exposure, or health effect. Should you stop wearing your Apple Watch band?
There is no verified recall or court order in the cited sources requiring owners to stop wearing the named bands. The available information does not justify telling every owner that immediate replacement is necessary.

If you have no symptoms, you can make a personal decision based on your tolerance for uncertainty, comfort, and material preferences. If you develop redness, itching, swelling, or other irritation:
- Remove the watch and band.
- Clean and dry the band, watch, and skin.
- Avoid wearing the band too tightly or too loosely.
- Stop using products that may be trapped beneath the band, such as sweat, soap, sunscreen, or lotion.
- Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe, persistent, spreading, or recur when you wear the band again.
Apple says irritation can have causes unrelated to PFAS, including friction, poor fit, sweat, soaps, lotions, nickel, and acrylates or methacrylates used in adhesives. Skin symptoms alone cannot identify PFAS as the cause. Apple’s cleaning, fit, and sensitivity guidance.

Apple also lists leather, FineWoven, stainless-steel, and titanium options. Do not assume that a material label such as “silicone” proves a band is PFAS-free; that requires a specific manufacturer statement or credible test report. Conversely, replacing a fluoroelastomer band is a preference or sensitivity decision, not proof of a medical requirement.

Apple says leather, FineWoven, and some stainless-steel bands are not recommended for water or workouts. Textile bands may be more comfortable for some users but can retain moisture. Choose according to both material concerns and how you use your watch. Browse Apple’s current band range.
Bottom line
Apple says its Watch bands are safe and says they are tested internally and by independent laboratories. Plaintiffs allege that the Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, and Ocean Band contain excessive PFAS, with the complaint focusing especially on PFHxA in the Sport Band. The public smartwatch-band study does not identify enough model-level detail to prove that a particular Apple band is positive. The lawsuit has survived in substantial part at the pleading stage, but no court has found that Apple Watch bands cause illness, and there is no verified recall in the cited material.
Owners with irritation should remove and clean the band, correct the fit, consider other causes, and seek medical advice when appropriate. Owners concerned about chemical uncertainty can choose another construction, but should avoid unsupported claims that any replacement is definitively PFAS-free.
